American Airlines Baggage Rules

American publishes the standard box and then adds the sentence that decides everything: it measures the full outside size, wheels and handles included.

American publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in for the carry-on and 18 × 14 × 8 in for the personal item, with no published weight limit. The sentence that matters is that it measures the full outside size, wheels and handles included — which is the larger of the two numbers most manufacturers publish.

Figures from American’s own published carry-on baggage page, checked 3 September 2026. Carriers change these; the source is linked at the bottom.

The published limits

American Airlines published baggage figures, checked 3 September 2026.

Carry-on22 × 14 × 9 inMeasured as the full outside size
Personal item18 × 14 × 8 inMust fit under the seat in front of you
Carry-on weightNone publishedYou still have to lift it into the bin

The carry-on box is the US standard, shared with Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian. The personal item is one of the more generous published figures — larger than United’s 17 × 10 × 9 in by a wide margin. Every carrier’s under-seat box.

The sentence that catches people

American states that it measures the full outside size of a carry-on, wheels and handles included. That is not a technicality. It is the difference between the two numbers almost every manufacturer publishes.

A bag marketed as a “21-inch carry-on” frequently publishes both a “case size” of 21 × 14 × 9 in and an “overall size” of 23 × 14.5 × 9 in. Retail listings quote the smaller one. American measures the larger one.

Manufacturer-published figures against American's 22 x 14 x 9 in box. The overall figure is the one American measures.

Rockland Melbourne 20 inNot separately published20 × 13 × 10 in1 in over on depth
American Tourister AirconicNot separately published21.7 × 15.8 × 7.9 in1.8 in over on width

That third row is the uncomfortable one. The Airconic is the lightest hard case in our whole ledger and it is nearly two inches over on width. How to measure your own bag the way a sizer does.

The personal item is the generous half

At 18 × 14 × 8 in, American publishes one of the larger under-seat boxes in the US market — 2,016 cubic inches against United’s 1,530, which is 32% more space.

That matters more than it sounds, because the personal item is the bag that is never gate-checked and never questioned. On a full flight it is the only allowance you can rely on. Bags built for that box.

No published weight limit

American publishes no cabin-bag weight cap, which puts it with the majority of US carriers — seven of the eleven we track publish nothing. The practical limit is whether you can lift the bag over your head into a bin without help.

This is also the habit that catches US travelers abroad. Fly American to Europe, connect onto a carrier publishing 10 kg, and a bag that was never weighed suddenly is. Which carriers publish a cap.

Bags whose published dimensions fit American Airlines's carry-on box

Every bag in our ledger whose published dimensions fit American's 22 x 14 x 9 in box on all three sides. Bags that publish no dimensions are omitted, because they cannot be checked.

What to buy for American

  • The safe answer → a bag whose overall published figure is inside 22 × 14 × 9 in. In our ledger that is a short list, and it is shorter than the marketing suggests.
  • Softside over hardside, if you are within half an inch. Fabric compresses into a sizer; a shell does not. The full comparison.
  • Use the personal item properly. At 18 × 14 × 8 in it holds a genuine amount, and it is the bag that cannot be taken from you at the door.
  • Check the overall figure before you buy, not the model name. A “21-inch” bag is frequently 23 inches of measured object.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · One-bag travel on any carrier that measures

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack

7.2

40 L that fits the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in box on height and depth, weighs 3.27 lb, and carries a warranty with no stated end date. It is the strongest single row in this ledger.

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 0.08 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on this site
  • The All Mighty Guarantee names no failure cause and no time limit
  • 21.7 in height clears the 22 in standard with room to spare

What you give up

  • 13.8 in width clears 14 in only when the pack is not overstuffed — soft bags grow
  • No wheels, so a long terminal is carried on your back
  • $9.25 per covered year is good but not the cheapest here
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 7.2/10 $185 ÷ 20 yr = $9.25/yr; $185 ÷ 40 L = $4.63/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency 8.7/10 3.27 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.082 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 10.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

2 · Southwest, Frontier and Sun Country flyers who want a lifetime warranty

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner (21 in)

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 5.4 lb for 46 L is 0.12 lb per liter, the lightest carry-on in this ledger
  • Lifetime limited warranty covering wheels, zippers and handles at a $160 published price
  • Softside give means an overstuffed bag still closes

What you give up

  • Published overall height of 23 in fails the 22 in limit at American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian
  • No published airline-damage cover
  • Fabric shell scuffs where a hardshell would only mark
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.1/10 $160 ÷ 20 yr = $8/yr; $160 ÷ 46 L = $3.48/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
  • Carry efficiency 7.3/10 5.4 lb ÷ 46 L = 0.117 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 8.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

Specs: Travelpro published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Travelpro publishes both a 21 × 14 × 9 in case size and a 23 × 14.5 × 9 in overall size. The overall figure is the one a gate sizer measures, so it is the one used here.

3 · Hawaiian's 25 lb carry-on cap, and anyone lifting a bag overhead unaided

American Tourister Airconic Carry-On Spinner

3.8

At 4.43 lb it is the lightest hardside carry-on in this ledger by nearly a pound, which matters most on the carriers that publish a weight cap.

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 4.43 lb empty leaves over 20 lb of payload inside Hawaiian's 25 lb published cap
  • Polypropylene flexes and returns where ABS cracks
  • 7.9 in depth is the slimmest here, which is what actually decides a tight bin

What you give up

  • 15.8 in width fails the 14 in limit at six US carriers
  • No published price, so we cannot compute cost per covered year
  • Light shells transmit more impact to what is inside them
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

4 · Buyers who want polycarbonate and the smallest published overage

Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Spinner (20 in)

3.3

Skip this one. Skip it for American specifically. At a published 22.25 x 14.5 x 9.5 in it is the tightest hard case in our ledger and it is still over the box on all three dimensions - and American is the carrier that states plainly it measures the full outside size. A quarter-inch of overage matters more here than almost anywhere.

The closest any polycarbonate case in this ledger gets to the 22 × 14 × 9 in standard box, missing it by a quarter-inch of height and half an inch of width.

What it does well

  • 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in is the tightest published box of any hard case here
  • Polycarbonate shell with a mounted TSA lock
  • 1.5 in expansion for the return leg

What you give up

  • Still fails the 22 × 14 × 9 in limit at six US carriers, by a small margin
  • No manufacturer-published price on 3 September 2026, so cost per covered year cannot be computed
  • No published capacity figure
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY

Specs: Samsonite published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Samsonite's own store did not publish a price for the 20 in Winfield 3 DLX on 3 September 2026 — only for the large spinner in the same line. Rather than borrow a reseller's number, the Value axis is not scored for this bag.

5 · Flying carriers that actually measure, and packing light on purpose

Rockland Melbourne Hardside Spinner (20 in)

Warranty 5 year limited warranty (published terms vary by retailer)

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 20 × 13 × 10 in clears the published carry-on limit at all eleven US carriers here
  • 43 linear inches, comfortably inside Delta's 45 linear inch cap
  • Expandable, so the small footprint is a floor rather than a ceiling

What you give up

  • Published warranty term differs between sources, which is its own warning
  • 7.5 lb for a case this small is a poor weight-per-volume trade
  • ABS shell at the cheapest end of the material ladder
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

Common questions

What size carry-on does American Airlines allow?
22 × 14 × 9 inches, measured as the full outside size with wheels and handles included. That is the larger of the two figures most manufacturers publish — a bag sold as a 21-inch carry-on frequently publishes a 23-inch overall height.
What is American Airlines' personal item size?
18 × 14 × 8 inches, which is one of the more generous published under-seat boxes in the US market — about 32% more volume than United’s 17 × 10 × 9 inches.
Does American Airlines weigh carry-on bags?
American publishes no cabin-bag weight limit, which puts it with the majority of US carriers. The practical limit is whether you can lift the bag into the overhead bin yourself. International carriers you connect onto frequently do publish a cap.
Does American measure wheels and handles?
Yes — it publishes that it measures the full outside size of a carry-on, wheels and handles included. That is the single most consequential sentence in its baggage policy, because retail listings usually quote the smaller case dimension.
