Why this page is shaped differently
Most “under $100” roundups quote a price, and most of those prices were true on the day the page was written and are not true now. Luggage in this tier is discounted constantly — Samsonite’s own store showed the same carry-on at $101.99, $118.99 and $127.49 depending on colorway on a single day.
So this page does two things differently. It ranks on the manufacturer’s published price, which is a stable, dated, citable figure, and it shows you the resulting cost per covered year. And it sends you to check the live price yourself before you buy, because the number that decides whether a bag is under $100 today is not a number we can honestly print.
That is a less satisfying page than one with confident prices on it. It is also the only version we can stand behind. Our price policy is written down.

Two of the six list under $100 at the manufacturer, and both are American Tourister. That is not a coincidence: American Tourister is Samsonite’s value line and it is one of the few brands in this tier that operates its own store and publishes prices there. Amazon Basics and Rockland are sold through retail, which means their price is whatever it is today.
The comparison that actually matters
Here is the finding that reframes this whole price bracket. The $89.99 American Tourister costs $9.00 per covered year. The $160 Travelpro Maxlite 5 — which is not remotely a budget bag — costs $8.00 per covered year, because its warranty states no end date rather than expiring at ten.
So the honest answer to “is a bag under $100 false economy?” is: no, if it has a ten-year warranty behind it, and yes if it has three. That is the line, and it does not run where the price does.
The catch nobody mentions in this bracket
Every bag in this ranking except one fails the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on box, and the failure is almost always the same dimension.

Width is where budget cases lose, and the reason is manufacturing: a wider shell is a cheaper way to add capacity than a taller one, because height is the dimension buyers check and width is the one they do not. If you fly American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue or Hawaiian, that extra inch is the difference between a carry-on and a bag that might be taken off you at the door.
The exception is instructive. The Rockland fits all eleven carriers because it is 20 × 13 × 10 in — smaller than everything else here, and it holds less as a result. There is no free lunch in this bracket, only an honest trade.
How to buy well under $100
- Warranty length is the whole game. Ten years at $90 is genuinely good value. Three years at $70 is not, whatever the sticker says.
- Check the overall dimension, not the name. A “21-inch” case is frequently 22–23 in overall. Measure the one you own before you replace it so you know what you are actually comparing.
- Prefer polypropylene to ABS if the price is close. ABS is the cheapest hardshell and the least impact-tolerant. The material differences are real and we ran them down.
- Buy for the carrier you fly most. If that is Southwest, the 24 × 16 × 10 in box makes several of these bags entirely compliant and the whole width problem disappears.
- Check the live price on the day. This bracket is discounted constantly. The $127.49 Samsonite in the table above was also listed at $101.99 in another colorway on the same day.
