The Best Travel Laundry Detergent

Washing two things in a sink is what turns a week's packing into a month's. The detergent is the cheapest part of that, and the only question that matters is whether it counts as a liquid.

By Sawyer V.Last updated

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

The decision is format, not brand. A detergent sheet is a solid, so it uses none of your 3-1-1 liquids allowance. Liquid packets are a liquid, and the two here cost about 60 ml of a 950 ml quart bag — roughly 6% of everything you are allowed to carry. Among the liquids, Tide publishes 12 washes for that volume and SinkSuds publishes 8.

Manufacturer-published listing figures, read 4 November 2026. We have not tested how well any of these clean, and nobody in this category publishes a wash-performance figure or a warranty term. Prices on the buy buttons are live.

Tide Travel Sink Packets (12 packets)

One question decides it

Not which cleans best — nobody publishes a figure for that, so anyone ranking these on cleaning power is guessing. The question that has a published answer is whether the detergent counts against your liquids allowance, and that splits the category cleanly in two.

A sheet is a solid. It is not a liquid, gel, aerosol, cream or paste, so the rule does not touch it and it rides outside the bag with your toothbrush. A packet of liquid is a liquid at any size, and it goes in the quart bag alongside the toothpaste. The full 3-1-1 rule, and the other solid swaps.

The four, as published

Manufacturer-published listing figures, read 4 November 2026. Quart-bag cost is the published liquid volume; a solid has none. No maker in this group publishes a warranty term or a cleaning-performance figure.

What a liquid actually costs you

The quart bag is 950 ml, and that is the whole allowance — every bottle, tube and jar, plus the air between them. Two fluid ounces of detergent is about 60 ml, so the liquid picks take roughly 6% of everything you are allowed to carry through a checkpoint to wash a handful of shirts.

Six percent sounds survivable until you notice what else wants that space. This site already costs out the solid swaps — a shampoo bar, a conditioner bar, toothpaste tablets, stick sunscreen, a bar of soap — at about 550 ml freed between them. Detergent belongs on exactly that list, and it is the one everybody forgets because it is the one thing in a wash bag that is not about your body.

Weight per wash, which is the figure nobody prints

Every listing here publishes a total weight and a count, and nobody divides one by the other. Doing it is where the group separates:

Grams per wash computed by us from each listing's published total weight and published count. The ARM and HAMMER and Earth Breeze figures include packaging, which the packet figures also do.
ProductPublished weightPublished washesGrams per wash
Earth Breeze sheets120 g60 loads~2.0 g
Tide Travel Sink Packets25.54 g12 packets~2.1 g
ARM and HAMMER Power Sheets249 g50 medium loads~5.0 g
SinkSuds packets68 g8 packets~8.5 g

Two things fall out of that. The first is that the lightest sheet and the lightest packet are the same weight per wash — about 2 g either way — so the format argument is genuinely about the quart bag and the dose, not about carrying less.

The second is the spread inside the liquids. SinkSuds publishes four times the weight per wash of the Tide packets for the same 2-ish fluid ounces of allowance, and it buys you 8 washes where Tide publishes 12. That is why it is the skip on this page despite being, on its own listing, the more thoughtfully specified product.

The thing people get wrong about sheet counts

Sheet packs are sold on a load count, and the load counts are not comparable. ARM and HAMMER publishes both numbers honestly — up to 100 small loads or 50 medium loads from the same 50 sheets — which tells you plainly that a sheet is one medium load or two small ones.

Earth Breeze publishes 60 loads from 60 sheets without splitting it that way. Neither is dishonest; they are just counting differently, and if you compare the headline numbers without reading the small print you will conclude the wrong thing about which pack goes further. For travel, where almost every wash is a small one, the small-load column is the one that matters.

What else the sink wash needs

  • A sink stopper you can rely on. Hotel basins frequently will not hold water, and this is the failure that actually ends a wash. A flat universal stopper weighs almost nothing; none of the detergents here includes one.
  • Somewhere for the wet clothes to hang. Synthetics and merino dry overnight, heavy cotton frequently does not, which is a packing decision more than a laundry one. How the interval works.
  • Somewhere for the dirty clothes before they are washed. That is a separate object and a genuinely cheap one — a laundry bag packs down to about the size of a paperback.
  • Not much detergent. The commonest sink-wash mistake is dosing for a machine. A premeasured packet removes the judgment; a torn sheet does not.

The recommendation

  • Sink washing on most nights → Tide Travel Sink Packets. 12 premeasured washes for a published 25.54 g, and the dose is already decided for you.
  • Carry-on only, and the quart bag is already full → Earth Breeze sheets. A solid uses none of the allowance, and 60 loads at about 2 g each is the lightest per-load figure here.
  • Mostly small loads, some machine loads → ARM and HAMMER Power Sheets, for the published 100 small loads — accepting that the box is the heaviest object on this page.
  • Unscented is non-negotiable → SinkSuds, and pay the weight. It is the only pick published as unscented and safe for all fabrics.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Nightly sink washing on a trip where you will never see a machine

Tide Travel Sink Packets (12 packets)

0.0

Twelve sink washes for a published 25.54 g and 2.04 fl oz of your quart bag. Per wash it is the lightest liquid by a factor of four, and it is premeasured for exactly the two-or-three-garment wash a hotel sink gets.

What it does well

  • 25.54 g published for 12 packets - about 2 g per wash, the lightest liquid per wash here
  • 5 ml premeasured per packet, which is the size a sink wash actually needs
  • 12 washes for 2.04 fl oz of quart-bag volume, 50 percent more than the other liquid

What you give up

  • A liquid, so it does come out of your 3-1-1 allowance where a sheet does not
  • Published as Original scent only, with no unscented option on this listing
  • Sized for a few items, so a full machine load means opening several at once
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth not scored — No published dimensions to check against carrier limits.
  • Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
  • Warranty & support 0.0/10 — no published term (0 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

Specs: Tide published listing specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. The listing publishes a card size of 8.62 x 7.6 x 2.13 in, which is the retail backing rather than the packets. Not used in the fit arithmetic. Retail-channel pricing only. Check the live price before buying.

2 · A long trip where you will reach a machine, carry-on only

Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent Sheets (60 loads)

0.0

The lightest published weight per load in this group - 60 loads from 0.12 kg works out at roughly 2 g a wash - and being a solid it never touches the quart bag.

What it does well

  • 60 published loads from a published 0.12 kg, about 2 g per load
  • A solid, so it uses none of the 3-1-1 liquids allowance at all
  • Premeasured sheets, so there is nothing to decant and nothing to spill

What you give up

  • Sized for machine loads, so a two-garment sink wash means tearing a sheet
  • The listing publishes no package dimensions, only a weight
  • Published as mid-transition between manufacturing sites, so the pack you get may differ from the one pictured

3 · Mixed machine and sink washing, where a small load is most of what you do

ARM and HAMMER 5-in-1 Power Sheets (50 count)

0.0

The only sheet here from a laundry brand that also sells the liquid, and the only pick publishing a small-load count - up to 100 small or 50 medium, which is the honest way to state it.

What it does well

  • Publishes both counts - up to 100 small loads or 50 medium - rather than one headline number
  • A solid, so it uses none of the 3-1-1 liquids allowance
  • Published box dimensions and weight, which most of this category omits

What you give up

  • 8.78 oz published, the heaviest pack here by a wide margin
  • A rigid box rather than a flat sleeve, so it packs less obligingly than it weighs
  • No warranty or satisfaction term published, like everything in this category
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth not scored — No published dimensions to check against carrier limits.
  • Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

4 · Delicates and sensitive skin, where unscented is the requirement

SinkSuds Travel Laundry Detergent (8 packets)

0.0

Skip this one. Skip it unless unscented is the requirement, in which case buy it without hesitating - it is the only pick here published as unscented and safe for all fabrics. On the two figures that decide a carry-on it loses to the other packet: 8 washes against 12 for effectively the same quart-bag volume, at a published 2.4 oz against 25.54 g, which is about four times the weight per wash. That is a published-figures result, not a verdict on how well it cleans.

Published unscented and published safe for all fabrics, which is the reason to buy it - but on the two figures that decide a carry-on it loses to the other packet: fewer washes for the same quart-bag volume, at four times the weight per wash.

What it does well

  • Published unscented, the only pick here that is
  • Published safe for all fabrics, including the delicates a sink wash is usually for
  • Published TSA compliant on the listing itself, so the format is not in doubt

What you give up

  • 2.4 oz published for 8 packets - about 8.5 g per wash, four times the other packet
  • 8 washes for 2 fl oz of quart bag, where the other packet gives 12 for 2.04 fl oz
  • A liquid, so unlike the sheets it comes out of the 3-1-1 allowance

Common questions

Can you bring laundry detergent on a plane?
Yes, and the format decides how. Detergent sheets are a solid, so the liquids rule does not apply to them at all and they travel outside the quart bag with no limit. Liquid detergent is a liquid at any size: it must be 3.4 oz or less per container and fit inside the quart bag with everything else.
Are laundry detergent sheets better than liquid for travel?
For carry-on, usually yes, because a sheet uses none of your 3-1-1 allowance where 2 fl oz of liquid packets takes about 6% of the 950 ml quart bag. The exception is sink washing: a 5 ml packet is premeasured for two or three garments, while a sheet is cut for a machine drum and has to be torn and estimated.
How much laundry detergent do you need for a two-week trip?
Far less than people pack. Washing two or three garments every second evening is about seven sink washes in a fortnight, which one 12-packet card covers with five to spare. If you plan to use a machine once mid-trip, a single sheet covers that load.
How do you wash clothes in a hotel sink?
Two or three items at a time, washed in the evening and hung overnight. The two things that go wrong are a basin that will not hold water - carry a flat universal stopper - and overdosing the detergent, which leaves you rinsing for ten minutes. Synthetics and merino dry overnight; heavy cotton often does not.
Do laundry detergent sheets count as a liquid for TSA?
No. The liquids rule covers liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes, and a dry dissolvable sheet is none of those. It travels outside the quart bag in any quantity. That is the single biggest practical argument for the format on a carry-on-only trip.
