How Much Should a Travel Backpack Weigh?
Empty weight is the only part of your packed weight you choose once and carry forever. The published spread across travel packs is a pound and a half.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
The travel packs we compile publish 2.93 to 4.52 lb empty, or 0.08 to 0.11 lb per liter of published capacity. Under 3.5 lb for a 40 L pack is light; over 4.5 lb is heavy for the category. Every wheeled case in our ledger is heavier than every pack.

What travel packs actually publish
There is no industry standard for what a travel pack “should” weigh, so the honest answer is a distribution rather than a number. Here is the whole distribution in our ledger, from the makers’ own specifications.
| Pack | Published weight | Published capacity | Weight per liter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotopaxi Allpa 35L | 2.93 lb | 35 L | 0.08 lb |
| Osprey Farpoint 40 | 3.27 lb | 40 L | 0.08 lb |
| Osprey Fairview 40 | 3.44 lb | 40 L | 0.09 lb |
| Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L | 4.4 lb | 40 L | 0.11 lb |
| Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L | 4.52 lb | 45 L | 0.10 lb |
The spread from lightest to heaviest is 1.59 lb. That does not sound like much until you notice it is roughly half of the lightest pack’s entire weight, and that you carry it on every single trip for the life of the bag.
Why weight per liter is the better question
“How heavy is it” is unanswerable without “how big is it”. A 45 L pack should weigh more than a 35 L pack; the question is whether it weighs more per liter it gives you.
That is why this site ranks packs on weight per liter rather than raw weight. Divide published weight by published capacity and the ordering changes: the Peak Design 45L is the heaviest bag here in absolute terms at 4.52 lb, but at 0.10 lb per liter it is more efficient than the Tortuga at 0.11.
- Under 0.09 lb per liter — excellent. Only the Allpa, the Farpoint and the Fairview manage it.
- 0.09 to 0.11 lb per liter — normal for a structured pack with a real harness, laptop sleeve and lockable zips.
- Above 0.12 lb per liter — you are paying for structure. That is what wheels and a hard shell cost: the wheeled cases we track run 0.12 to 0.27 lb per liter.
What empty weight costs against a published cap
Most US carriers publish no cabin weight limit, so for a lot of flying this is a comfort question. On the carriers that do publish one, empty weight is allowance you have already spent.
| Carrier | Published cabin cap | Allpa 35 leaves | Peak Design 45 leaves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawaiian | 25 lb | 22.1 lb | 20.5 lb |
| Ryanair | 22 lb | 19.1 lb | 17.5 lb |
| easyJet | 33.1 lb | 30.2 lb | 28.6 lb |
| Frontier, Breeze, Sun Country | 35 lb | 32.1 lb | 30.5 lb |
| British Airways | 50.7 lb | 47.8 lb | 46.2 lb |
The pattern: on a generous cap, a pound and a half of extra pack is noise. On Ryanair’s published 22 lb it is 7 percent of everything you are allowed to bring. The full table of published cabin caps is the reference for that.
What the pack weighs packed
We do not publish packed weights, because we have not weighed anyone’s luggage and will not invent a figure. What we can tell you is the arithmetic that matters: a 40 L pack full of clothes typically lands somewhere between 15 and 25 lb depending entirely on what you put in it, and the pack itself is the only part of that you control before you start packing.
If you want the real number for your own bag, a luggage scale is about ten dollars — the ones we compile publish their own accuracy tolerances, which is more than most scales do.
Sensible rules of thumb
- For a 35-40 L carry-on pack: aim for 3 to 3.5 lb published. Everything in that band in our ledger also publishes a real harness.
- For a 45 L pack: under 4.5 lb published is reasonable; the extra capacity has to be built out of something.
- Against any published weight cap: subtract the empty weight first, then pack to what is left. That is the only order that works.
- Ignore weights that are not published by the maker. Retailer listings frequently quote shipping weight, which includes the box.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.
1 · Shorter torsos, and anyone the Farpoint's shoulder straps do not suit
Osprey Fairview 40 Travel Pack
The Farpoint's harness geometry rebuilt for a shorter torso and narrower shoulders, at exactly the published 22 × 14 × 9 in box.
- Published size
- 22 × 14 × 9 in
- Weight
- 3.44 lb
- Capacity
- 40 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.09 lb/L

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — limited lifetime
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- Published dimensions match the standard carry-on box exactly
- Adjustable torso length rather than a fixed harness
- Same All Mighty Guarantee as the Farpoint
What you give up
- $200 against the Farpoint's $185 for 0.17 lb more weight
- At exactly 22 × 14 × 9 in there is no margin for a stuffed pack
- Laptop sleeve takes 16 in, so a larger machine travels elsewhere
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 6.8/10 — $200 ÷ 20 yr = $10/yr; $200 ÷ 40 L = $5/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 8.6/10 — 3.44 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.086 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · One-bag travel on any carrier that measures
Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack
40 L that fits the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in box on height and depth, weighs 3.27 lb, and carries a warranty with no stated end date. It is the strongest single row in this ledger.
- Published size
- 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 in

- 40 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.08 lb/L

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 0.08 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on this site
- The All Mighty Guarantee names no failure cause and no time limit
- 21.7 in height clears the 22 in standard with room to spare
What you give up
- 13.8 in width clears 14 in only when the pack is not overstuffed — soft bags grow
- No wheels, so a long terminal is carried on your back
- $9.25 per covered year is good but not the cheapest here
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.2/10 — $185 ÷ 20 yr = $9.25/yr; $185 ÷ 40 L = $4.63/L
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency 8.7/10 — 3.27 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.082 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

3 · Flying carriers with different limits on the outbound and the return
Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L
A 45 L bag that compresses to 35 L is the honest answer to a carry-on limit that changes by carrier — you shrink the bag rather than repack it.
- Published size
- 22 × 13 × 9.5 in
- Weight
- 4.52 lb
- Capacity
- 45 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.10 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $15/yr
- Published list price
- $300
Warranty Peak Design lifetime product warranty
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- Compresses from 45 L to 35 L, which is the only real answer to a variable limit
- Lifetime warranty at $15 per covered year
- Two laptop and tablet compartments as published, not an afterthought sleeve
What you give up
- 4.52 lb is 1.25 lb heavier than the Farpoint for 5 L more capacity
- $300 published price is the second-highest in this ledger
- Expanded to 45 L it is over the standard box on depth at every US carrier
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 5.0/10 — $300 ÷ 20 yr = $15/yr; $300 ÷ 45 L = $6.67/L
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency 8.0/10 — 4.52 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.100 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: Peak Design published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Peak Design publishes an expandable range: roughly 22 × 13 × 9 in compressed to 35 L, and 22 × 13 × 11 in expanded to 45 L. The 9.5 in figure here is the published exterior depth at the standard setting.
4 · Clamshell packing when every ounce is being counted
Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack
The lightest travel pack in this ledger and the only one whose maker publishes no warranty term at all — which is a real cost, not a technicality.
- Published size
- 22 × 12 × 10 in
- Weight
- 2.93 lb
- Capacity
- 35 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.08 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- Not published
- Published list price
- $190
Warranty Guaranteed for Good limited warranty — repair, replace or credit, with no published term
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 2.93 lb for 35 L is 0.08 lb per liter, level with the Farpoint
- Full clamshell opening with four mesh-fronted internal compartments
- TPU-coated 840D shell is heavier-duty fabric than the capacity suggests
What you give up
- Cotopaxi's published warranty states no term — the old 61-year figure is history, and lifespan is at the company's discretion
- 10 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
- Without a published warranty term, cost per covered year cannot be computed at all
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 4.8/10 — $190 ÷ 35 L = $5.43/L
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency 8.7/10 — 2.93 lb ÷ 35 L = 0.084 lb/L
- Warranty & support 2.0/10 — no published term (0 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
