Is the Osprey Farpoint 40 Worth It?
It is the most-recommended travel pack in the category, which is exactly why it deserves the arithmetic rather than the applause. Four published numbers decide it, and one of them is a problem.

Yes, on the arithmetic. $185 buys 40 L at 3.27 lb — 0.082 lb per liter, the best carry efficiency of any 40 L bag here — under a guarantee Osprey publishes as covering any reason, any product and any era, including airline handling damage. That is $9.25 per covered year. The argument against it is one number: 9.1 in of published depth against a 9 in limit.

On four of those six rows the Farpoint is the best number on the page. That is unusual — most gear that gets recommended everywhere is recommended on feel, and this one survives being divided.
The guarantee is the part that is actually rare
Osprey publishes the All Mighty Guarantee as covering any reason, any product, any era. Read the second half of that sentence carefully: no named failure cause, no purchase-date cutoff, and — unusually — airline handling damage included.
Almost nothing else in this ledger publishes that. Samsonite and American Tourister publish 10-year terms against defects in materials and workmanship. Travelpro publishes airline-damage cover on its Platinum Elite line and not on the Maxlite 5. Cotopaxi and Tortuga publish policies with no stated term at all. Every open-ended warranty here, priced.
What we cannot tell you is what claiming is like. No maker publishes turnaround times or refusal rates, and we have not tested the process. The scope is a published fact; the service is not.
The number that argues against it
9.1 in. Osprey publishes the Farpoint at 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 in, and seven US carriers publish a 9 in depth limit. A tenth of an inch.
Two honest readings of that, and you should pick the one that matches how you pack:
- It does not matter. A soft pack has no fixed depth. Packed two-thirds full it measures under 9 in; the published figure describes the bag at its designed load. Nobody has ever failed a sizer by a tenth of an inch on a compressible bag.
- It matters more than the number suggests. The corollary of a soft bag not having a fixed depth is that a stuffed one is deeper than 9.1 in, not shallower. If you fill 40 L and then sit on the lid to close it, the published figure is the floor, not the ceiling.
The bag that removes the question entirely is the Fairview 40, published at exactly 22 × 14 × 9 in — same guarantee, $15 more, 0.17 lb heavier, and built around a shorter torso. Farpoint against Fairview.
Who should not buy it
- Anyone with a short torso. The Farpoint’s harness is not adjustable for torso length; the Fairview’s is. This is the single most common reason someone dislikes a pack that everyone else recommends. How to check.
- Anyone crossing a long terminal with a bad back. 40 L of contents is carried, not rolled. Wheels cost about 2 lb and buy you the ability to not carry anything. The trade, costed.
- Anyone flying Ryanair on a Basic fare. Ryanair publishes 20 cm — 7.9 in — of depth for the cabin bag, and the Farpoint is 9.1 in. It is not close. The European boxes.
- Anyone who wants a laptop compartment as a first-class citizen. The Farpoint has a sleeve. The Peak Design publishes two dedicated compartments.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L
Skip this one. Not the alternative to reach for here. It is $115 more than the Farpoint for 5 L more capacity and 1.25 lb more weight, and expanded to its full 45 L it is over the standard carry-on box on depth at every US carrier. It earns its price for one specific reason — it compresses from 45 L to 35 L, which is the only real answer to carriers with different limits on the outbound and the return. If that is not your problem, it is $115 of somebody else's problem.
A 45 L bag that compresses to 35 L is the honest answer to a carry-on limit that changes by carrier — you shrink the bag rather than repack it.
