easyJet Baggage Rules

easyJet's free under-seat bag is larger than most US carriers' personal item. That single figure changes how you should pack for it.

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

easyJet publishes a free under-seat bag of 45 × 36 × 20 cm — about 17.7 × 14.2 × 7.9 in, which is larger than most US carriers’ personal item — plus a paid overhead cabin bag of 56 × 45 × 25 cm up to 15 kg.

Figures from easyJet’s own published cabin bag and hold luggage page, checked 3 September 2026. Inch figures are conversions of the published centimeter values.

The published limits

easyJet published cabin allowances, checked 3 September 2026.

The free bag is the story

Compare easyJet’s free under-seat allowance against the published personal-item boxes of US carriers and it wins most of them.

Published under-seat boxes compared. easyJet's free bag is within 2% of the most generous US personal item.
CarrierFree under-seat bagCubic inchesvs easyJet
easyJet17.7 × 14.2 × 7.9 in1,986
American, Frontier, Allegiant18 × 14 × 8 in2,016+2%
JetBlue, Breeze17 × 13 × 8 in1,768−11%
United17 × 10 × 9 in1,530−23%

That is a genuinely unusual position for a low-cost carrier: the free allowance is essentially equal to the best US personal item, and 30% larger than United’s. Ryanair’s free Basic bag, by contrast, is 40 × 30 × 20 cm — about 1,470 cubic inches, a quarter smaller. The Ryanair comparison.

The practical read: on easyJet, a well-chosen under-seat bag genuinely covers a short trip without paying for the bin at all. Bags built for that box.

The depth limit is still 20 centimeters

The free bag is generous on footprint and tight on depth: 20 cm, which is 7.9 in. That is the same depth cap Ryanair applies, and it is an inch under the US standard.

So a US personal-item bag sized 18 × 14 × 8 in is over on depth by a tenth of an inch, and over on height by a third of an inch — marginal on both, which on a soft bag is usually survivable and on a rigid one is not.

Depth is where under-seat bags fail generally, because a rigid water bottle or a padded laptop sleeve pushes a bag past its stated depth even when the footprint is fine. A 3.5 in bottle is a third of that depth.

The paid bag, and the 15 kg cap

The overhead cabin bag is 56 × 45 × 25 cm — identical to British Airways’ box — with a 15 kg cap. It is a paid add-on.

15 kg is 33.1 lb: half again as generous as Ryanair’s 10 kg and well under BA’s 23 kg. It is loose enough for most packing and tight enough that a heavy case matters.

What to do for easyJet

  • Short trip → free bag only. At 1,986 cubic inches it is within 2% of the most generous US personal item, and it costs nothing.
  • Buy for depth, not footprint. 20 cm is the binding dimension on the free bag, exactly as it is on Ryanair.
  • Prefer a soft bag. Marginal on a stated dimension is survivable in fabric and not in a rigid shell.
  • If you buy the bin, buy a light case15 kg is real, and you are paying for the allowance the case is eating.

Bags that fit easyJet's free under-seat box

Checked against easyJet's published 45 x 36 x 20 cm limit, converted to inches, on all three sides. This is the allowance included on every fare.

Nothing in our ledger publishes dimensions inside this box on all three sides. That is a finding rather than an omission — it means the limit is tighter than the bags this market actually sells.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · A personal item that is also the daypack for the whole trip

Osprey Daylite Plus 20L Backpack

6.8

The only personal-item bag here with a published weight, a published price and a warranty that names no end date — $4 per covered year is the cheapest figure on this site.

What it does well

  • $4.00 per covered year is the lowest cost-per-year figure in this ledger
  • 1.31 lb for 20 L, and it is the bag you then use every day at the destination
  • 19 × 11 × 9.5 in fits the published personal-item box at American, Southwest, Frontier and Allegiant

What you give up

  • Over United's published 17 × 10 × 9 in limit on all three dimensions
  • 20 L is genuinely small — this is a day bag, not a week's clothes
  • No lockable zippers
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.3/10 $80 ÷ 20 yr = $4/yr; $80 ÷ 20 L = $4/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 Fits the published personal-item limit at 0 of 8 US carriers
  • Carry efficiency 9.4/10 1.31 lb ÷ 20 L = 0.066 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 10.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

2 · Hawaiian's 25 lb carry-on cap, and anyone lifting a bag overhead unaided

American Tourister Airconic Carry-On Spinner

3.8

At 4.43 lb it is the lightest hardside carry-on in this ledger by nearly a pound, which matters most on the carriers that publish a weight cap.

Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 4.43 lb empty leaves over 20 lb of payload inside Hawaiian's 25 lb published cap
  • Polypropylene flexes and returns where ABS cracks
  • 7.9 in depth is the slimmest here, which is what actually decides a tight bin

What you give up

  • 15.8 in width fails the 14 in limit at six US carriers
  • No published price, so we cannot compute cost per covered year
  • Light shells transmit more impact to what is inside them
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
  • Warranty & support 4.0/10 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Specs: American Tourister published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. American Tourister lists the Airconic on its own store but did not publish a price we could read on 3 September 2026, so the Value axis is not scored for this bag.

3 · Nothing in this ledger — see the alternatives above it

Delsey Paris Helium Aero Carry-On Spinner (21 in)

3.3

Skip this one. Skip it against a 15 kg cap. At a published 8.4 lb it is the heaviest carry-on in this ledger, spending 25% of easyJet's cabin allowance empty - and you would be paying for the bin to carry it. On a carrier with a free bag this large, buying the paid one for a heavy case is the wrong trade twice.

Skip this one. At 8.4 lb it is the heaviest carry-on in this ledger, and its published 22.5 × 15.25 × 10 in box misses the standard limit on all three dimensions.

Warranty 10 year limited warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Two-compartment layout with a lined divider and tie-down straps
  • TSA-approved combination lock as standard

What you give up

  • 8.4 lb empty is a third of Hawaiian's entire published 25 lb allowance
  • Over the limit on all three dimensions at six US carriers
  • No manufacturer-published price, so its value cannot be checked either
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY

Warranty No warranty term published

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: AA, F9, G4. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 18 × 14 × 8 in matches the published personal-item limit at American, Frontier and Allegiant exactly
  • 30 L in a bag that folds flat when it is not the bag you need
  • Sleeve strap that drops over a suitcase handle

What you give up

  • Too big for United's published 17 × 10 × 9 in personal-item box
  • No published weight, warranty term or price
  • A soft duffel packed to 30 L stops being 8 in deep
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.8/10 Fits the published personal-item limit at 3 of 8 US carriers: AA, F9, G4

Warranty Warranty against defects in materials and craftsmanship for as long as you own it — no term published

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: AA, F9, G4. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 18 × 14 × 8 in matches the published personal-item limit at American, Frontier and Allegiant
  • Takes a 17.3 in laptop, which most personal-item bags will not
  • Ownership-length defect warranty, published without a stated end date

What you give up

  • Over United's published 17 × 10 × 9 in personal-item box on all three dimensions
  • No published weight or capacity, so neither carry efficiency nor cost per liter can be computed
  • Warranty covers defects, not the wear that actually kills a bag
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.

Common questions

What size bag is free on easyJet?
45 × 36 × 20 cm — about 17.7 × 14.2 × 7.9 inches, or 1,986 cubic inches. That is within 2% of the most generous US personal item and about 30% larger than United’s published box, and it is included on every fare.
Does easyJet charge for a cabin bag?
The larger overhead cabin bag — 56 × 45 × 25 cm up to 15 kg — is a paid add-on. The under-seat bag is free on every fare and is large enough to cover a short trip on its own.
What is easyJet's cabin bag weight limit?
15 kg, or 33.1 lb, on the paid overhead bag. That is half again as generous as Ryanair’s 10 kg and well under British Airways’ 23 kg.
Will a US personal item bag fit easyJet's free allowance?
Marginally. A US bag sized 18 × 14 × 8 inches is about a tenth of an inch over on depth and a third of an inch over on height. On a soft bag that is usually survivable; on a rigid one it is not.
