The Best Carry-On Luggage for International Travel

A bag sized for American Airlines is over the limit on Ryanair by four inches of depth. International flying is a different constraint, and almost nobody ranks for it.

International flying adds two constraints US travelers rarely meet: a smaller box and a real weight cap. Ryanair publishes 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg; the US standard is 22 × 14 × 9 in, which is 56 × 36 × 23 cm and no weight limit at all. The depth is what fails — 23 cm against 20.

Two constraints instead of one

On US carriers a carry-on has to satisfy a box, and seven of the eleven we track publish no weight limit at all. On European short-haul it has to satisfy a box and a scale, and the scale is enforced far more often.

That changes what you should buy. On a purely domestic rotation, an 8 lb hardshell is a comfort question. On a trip involving Ryanair’s published 10 kg — which is 22 lb — an 8 lb empty bag has consumed 36% of your allowance before you pack a shirt.

Nearly five pounds of payload separates the lightest and heaviest bag here. That is four days of clothing, decided entirely by which case you bought. The full lightweight ranking.

The depth problem

The US standard is 22 × 14 × 9 in. Converted, that is 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Ryanair publishes 55 × 40 × 20 cm for the overhead bag, and easyJet and British Airways both publish 56 × 45 × 25 cm.

Read those carefully and the pattern is clear: European carriers are more generous on width and less generous on depth. A US-standard bag at 23 cm deep is over Ryanair’s 20 cm by three centimeters, while having four centimeters of width to spare it cannot use.

Published limits, checked 3 September 2026. Ryanair's Basic fare includes only the 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag; the box above requires paid Priority.

Only one bag in our ledger publishes a depth under 20 cm: the American Tourister Airconic, at 7.9 in, which is 20.1 cm — a millimeter over and effectively at the limit on a rigid shell. The full international limits page has the rest.

What to actually buy for international travel

  • Long-haul only, connecting on legacy carriers → buy for the US standard. British Airways and easyJet both publish boxes larger than 22 × 14 × 9 in, so a standard US carry-on is comfortably inside.
  • Any European budget leg → buy for weight first and depth second. The Airconic at 4.43 lb and 7.9 in deep is the closest thing in our ledger to a bag designed for this.
  • Ryanair Basic specifically → do not buy a suitcase at all. The Basic fare includes only the 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag, which is a personal-item bag, not a carry-on. Paying for Priority to bring a case is often more than the fare.
  • Mixed itineraries → size for the strictest carrier on the ticket, then everything else is easy. That is the same principle as sizing for United domestically.

One habit worth building

Weigh the packed bag before you leave for the airport. On a US domestic rotation it never matters; on a European short-haul leg it decides whether you pay at the gate, and gate fees on budget carriers routinely exceed the fare.

The method needs no equipment: stand on a bathroom scale holding the bag, then without it, and take the difference. It is accurate to within a pound, which is more precision than any gate enforcement applies. More on that here.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Southwest, Frontier and Sun Country flyers who want a lifetime warranty

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner (21 in)

6.6

Skip this one. Skip it for European short-haul specifically. It is one of the best bags on this site and its published 23 in overall height is 58 cm — three centimeters over the 55 cm that Ryanair and most European carriers print for the overhead bag. On a transatlantic long-haul it is fine; on a connecting budget leg it is the wrong tool.

The best weight-per-liter figure of any softside carry-on here, and the cheapest route to a lifetime warranty — but the published overall height is 23 in, which is an inch over the limit at most US carriers.

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 5.4 lb for 46 L is 0.12 lb per liter, the lightest carry-on in this ledger
  • Lifetime limited warranty covering wheels, zippers and handles at a $160 published price
  • Softside give means an overstuffed bag still closes

What you give up

  • Published overall height of 23 in fails the 22 in limit at American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian
  • No published airline-damage cover
  • Fabric shell scuffs where a hardshell would only mark
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.1/10 $160 ÷ 20 yr = $8/yr; $160 ÷ 46 L = $3.48/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
  • Carry efficiency 7.3/10 5.4 lb ÷ 46 L = 0.117 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 8.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

Specs: Travelpro published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Travelpro publishes both a 21 × 14 × 9 in case size and a 23 × 14.5 × 9 in overall size. The overall figure is the one a gate sizer measures, so it is the one used here.

2 · Anyone who wants a front laptop pocket on a hard shell

LEVEL8 Road Runner Carry-On (20 in)

4.7

The only hard case here with a published height under 22 in, and it pays for that with the worst weight-per-liter figure in the ledger.

Warranty Lifetime warranty

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 21.5 in published height is genuinely under the 22 in standard
  • Front-opening laptop pocket that takes a 15.6 in machine
  • $9.50 per covered year against a lifetime warranty

What you give up

  • 9.3 lb for 35 L is 0.27 lb per liter, more than double the Maxlite 5
  • 14.4 in width is still a fifth of an inch over the 14 in standard
  • The lightest thing in the bag will be the bag's own dead weight allowance
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 6.6/10 $189.99 ÷ 20 yr = $9.50/yr; $189.99 ÷ 35 L = $5.43/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency 1.4/10 9.3 lb ÷ 35 L = 0.266 lb/L

3 · Hawaiian's 25 lb carry-on cap, and anyone lifting a bag overhead unaided

American Tourister Airconic Carry-On Spinner

At 4.43 lb it is the lightest hardside carry-on in this ledger by nearly a pound, which matters most on the carriers that publish a weight cap.

Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 4.43 lb empty leaves over 20 lb of payload inside Hawaiian's 25 lb published cap
  • Polypropylene flexes and returns where ABS cracks
  • 7.9 in depth is the slimmest here, which is what actually decides a tight bin

What you give up

  • 15.8 in width fails the 14 in limit at six US carriers
  • No published price, so we cannot compute cost per covered year
  • Light shells transmit more impact to what is inside them
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
  • Warranty & support 4.0/10 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

4 · Buyers who want polycarbonate and the smallest published overage

Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Spinner (20 in)

Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in is the tightest published box of any hard case here
  • Polycarbonate shell with a mounted TSA lock
  • 1.5 in expansion for the return leg

What you give up

  • Still fails the 22 × 14 × 9 in limit at six US carriers, by a small margin
  • No manufacturer-published price on 3 September 2026, so cost per covered year cannot be computed
  • No published capacity figure
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

Specs: Samsonite published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Samsonite's own store did not publish a price for the 20 in Winfield 3 DLX on 3 September 2026 — only for the large spinner in the same line. Rather than borrow a reseller's number, the Value axis is not scored for this bag.

5 · Flying carriers that actually measure, and packing light on purpose

Warranty 5 year limited warranty (published terms vary by retailer)

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 20 × 13 × 10 in clears the published carry-on limit at all eleven US carriers here
  • 43 linear inches, comfortably inside Delta's 45 linear inch cap
  • Expandable, so the small footprint is a floor rather than a ceiling

What you give up

  • Published warranty term differs between sources, which is its own warning
  • 7.5 lb for a case this small is a poor weight-per-volume trade
  • ABS shell at the cheapest end of the material ladder
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

Common questions

What size carry-on is best for international travel?
Buy for depth and weight rather than for the US 22 × 14 × 9 inch box. European carriers publish more width and less depth — Ryanair allows 55 × 40 × 20 cm against the US standard’s 23 cm depth — and they publish real weight caps that most US carriers do not.
Will a US carry-on fit European airlines?
On British Airways and easyJet, yes — both publish 56 × 45 × 25 cm, which is larger than the US standard. On Ryanair, no: its 20 cm depth limit is three centimeters tighter than a US-standard bag, and that is the dimension that fails.
How much can a carry-on weigh on international flights?
Far less than on US carriers. Ryanair publishes 10 kg, easyJet 15 kg and British Airways 23 kg, and European carriers weigh cabin bags at the gate far more often than US ones. Seven of the eleven US carriers we track publish no weight limit at all.
Do I need a smaller suitcase for Ryanair?
On the Basic fare you need no suitcase at all — it includes only a 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag, which is a personal-item bag. The 55 × 40 × 20 cm overhead allowance requires paid Priority, and that fee sometimes exceeds the fare.
What is the lightest carry-on for international flying?
Of the bags we track, the American Tourister Airconic at a published 4.43 lb — 20% of Ryanair’s 10 kg cap, leaving 17.6 lb of payload. The heaviest case in our ledger consumes 42% of the same allowance before anything goes in it.
