Why weight is different from size

Size limits on this site come with a constant caveat: they are published clearly and enforced inconsistently. A bag half an inch over travels most days and is stopped some days, and which happens depends on the agent, the flight and the queue.

Weight has no such discretion. A checked bag goes on a scale in order to be tagged — the weight is part of the transaction, not an inspection someone chooses to perform. There is no version of checking a bag where nobody weighs it.

Which makes it the one baggage limit worth being genuinely precise about, and the one where preparation reliably pays.

The caps, checked and cabin

Checked baggage is typically capped at 50 lb per bag at US carriers, with a higher tier above it and a hard refusal somewhere above that. Cabin baggage is a different picture entirely, and a much more surprising one.

A fifth of your allowance is decided at purchase

The part of this that most people never account for: the bag itself is inside the limit. Every pound of empty case is a pound of clothing you cannot bring.

Nearly ten pounds separates the lightest and heaviest option there — a fifth of the entire allowance, decided in a shop months earlier. The checked cases compared.

What actually happens at the desk

1. The bag goes on the scale and reads over. The agent tells you the number and the fee.
2. You are offered the chance to redistribute. Take it. Moving three pounds into a carry-on or into a traveling companion’s bag is free, and it is the single most useful thing you can do at this moment.
3. Or you pay the overweight fee, which is charged per bag and per leg — so a round trip with a connection can be four charges rather than one.
4. Above a higher published threshold the bag is refused entirely at most carriers, usually somewhere around 70 to 100 lb, for handler safety rather than for revenue.

Point two is the one people forget under pressure. You are standing in an airport with a bag full of things and another bag beside you, and the fix is free.

The eleven-dollar fix

Weigh the bag at home. That is the whole answer, and there are two ways to do it.

• A luggage scale. The one we track publishes 110 lb capacity in 0.1 lb increments at $10.99 and 4.8 oz — which is a published $5.50 per covered year against its two-year warranty, and less than a single overweight fee anywhere. The scale in detail.
• A bathroom scale, for free. Stand on it holding the bag, then without it, and take the difference. Accurate to within about a pound, which is all the precision a 50 lb cap requires.

The hanging scale wins on one specific thing: you can use it in a hotel room on the return leg, which is the leg that actually goes over. Bags gain weight on holiday and nobody weighs the return.

How to lose three pounds in two minutes

• Wear the heaviest things. Boots, a coat, a sweater. Worn clothing counts against no published limit anywhere and this is the largest single saving available. Shoes, and why you wear the worst offender.
• Move books and electronics to the cabin bag. Dense, small, and on most US carriers the cabin bag has no published weight limit at all.
• Distribute across the party. Weight caps are per bag, not per passenger. Four bags at 45 lb is legal where one at 60 lb is a fee.
• Post the excess. Frequently cheaper than a fee, and it arrives after you do, which nobody minds.
• Leave the third pair of shoes. It was not going to be worn.

The cabin trap for US travelers

This is where the habit fails. Seven of eleven US carriers publish no cabin weight limit, so a US-only traveler never develops the reflex of weighing a carry-on — and then flies a carrier publishing 10 kg and discovers a 9.3 lb empty case has spent 42% of the allowance before packing.
