What a brand actually determines

Brand-versus-brand comparisons usually end up comparing two products and calling it a brand verdict. That is a category error: Samsonite makes a $127 polycarbonate case and Samsonite also owns Tumi. A single verdict cannot cover both.

What a brand genuinely controls, across its whole range, is two things — and both of them are published documents rather than opinions.

• The warranty posture. One document, applied across the line. It is the closest thing to a durability claim any maker will commit to in writing.
• Specification transparency. Whether the spec sheet tells you the weight, the capacity, the shell polymer and the price. A brand that publishes all four is a brand you can actually compare.

The field splits into three tiers

Rank the thirteen brands in our ledger on those two axes and a pattern appears that has nothing to do with price.

The outdoor brands publish the strongest terms, and Osprey’s is the outlier even among them: the All Mighty Guarantee names no failure cause, no time limit and explicitly covers damage caused by an airline — which nothing else in this ledger does except one Travelpro line.

The brands that publish no term at all

Cotopaxi and Tortuga both publish warranties that promise a remedy and state no duration. That is not the same as having no warranty, and it is not the same as a lifetime one either.

The practical consequence on this site is arithmetic. We compute cost per covered year, and a term with no denominator cannot be computed — so the Value axis is dropped for those products and their score comes from the remaining axes. That is a real cost of the ambiguity, borne by the product. Why we do it that way.

Where a term is open-ended but explicit — Osprey, Patagonia, Travelpro — we compute against a published 20-year horizon. That is a stated convention chosen so the arithmetic works, applied identically to every open-ended warranty, and it is not a durability claim.

Two of these are the same company

Worth knowing before you treat a brand comparison as a competitive one. American Tourister was acquired by Astrum International in 1993; Astrum was renamed Samsonite Corporation two years later. A long warranty is narrower than it sounds

Ten years and lifetime terms both overwhelmingly cover defects in materials and workmanship — a part that was wrong when it left the factory. They typically do not cover:

• Scuffs, scratches and a cracked shell from one hard impact, which terms usually classify as normal wear or misuse.

• Best wheeled-luggage brand → Travelpro. Lifetime terms, repair as the published first remedy, and the only case line covering airline damage.
