The warranty is the real difference

Both brands are owned by serious luggage companies with long histories, both sell through the same channels, and both make bags that will survive a normal trip. What genuinely separates them on paper is what each will commit to when a bag stops working.

Travelpro publishes a warranty with no stated end date and names the components: wheels, zippers, extension handles and carrying handles. That list matters, because those are the four things that actually fail on a rolling case — not the shell.

Samsonite publishes a limited ten-year global warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. Ten years is a genuinely long term and “global” is not a throwaway word — it means a claim works where you bought the bag and where you are.

Turned into money, the gap is smaller than it looks and it runs the direction most people would not guess.

The clause that decides the premium tier

Travelpro’s Platinum Elite publishes something no other bag in our ledger publishes: damage caused by an airline is covered, provided the bag is registered. Given that gate-checking a carry-on is now routine on full flights, and given that the damage from being sent down a belt is precisely the wheel-and-handle damage the warranty names, that is a substantive difference rather than a marketing line.

It costs $11.50 per covered year over the Maxlite 5. Whether that is worth it is a question about how you fly, not about the bag:

• Basic Economy on full flights, boarding last → the clause is probably the best-value thing on this page.
• Status, early boarding, bin space every time → you are paying $230 more for cover you will not claim.

Neither of them fits, and they fail differently

Both flagship bags clear the published limit at only four of the eleven US carriers we track — but for different reasons, and the difference is instructive.

Samsonite’s failure is width and depth; Travelpro’s is height. Height is the dimension a gate sizer catches most reliably, because a bag goes into the frame vertically. Width and depth get more benefit of the doubt in practice — which is not a rule, and we are not telling you to rely on it.

The Winfield 3 DLX is the interesting row: 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in misses the standard box on all three dimensions by the smallest margins in our entire ledger. It is the closest any mainstream polycarbonate case gets. The per-carrier limits are here, and how a sizer actually measures is here.

Which line to compare, within each brand

Travelpro

Maxlite 5 is the value line: 5.4 lb for 46 L, which is 0.12 lb per liter — the best carry efficiency of any carry-on in our ledger. Platinum Elite is the same capacity in a heavier ballistic-nylon build at 7.8 lb, with the airline-damage clause. You are paying $230 for 2.4 lb more bag and better cover.

Samsonite

Omni PC is full polycarbonate at 7.05 lb — America’s most widely sold hard case, and the one whose published height actually meets the 22 in standard. Winfield 3 DLX is the tighter box at 6.97 lb, though Samsonite published no price for the 20-inch version on the day we checked, so we cannot compute its value. Freeform is polypropylene at 6.5 lb and $129.99 — lighter and more crack-tolerant, in a larger box that fits fewer gates.

The verdict, for a named buyer

• You fly a few times a year and want the cheapest good bag → Travelpro Maxlite 5. $8.00 per covered year, the best weight-per-liter figure here, and a warranty that names the parts that break. Accept the 23 in height.
• You carry a laptop or camera and want a hard shell → Samsonite Omni PC. Full polycarbonate at $127.49 published, and its height meets the standard even though its width does not.
• Your bag gets gate-checked most trips → Travelpro Platinum Elite, for the airline-damage clause. It is the only bag in our ledger that publishes one.
• You need the tightest possible published box → Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX. Nothing else mainstream gets closer to 22 × 14 × 9 in.
• Weight is your binding constraint → neither, necessarily. The lightweight ranking has bags under 5 lb.
