Eight carriers, six different boxes

Search for a personal item bag and you will find hundreds of listings with 18 × 14 × 8 in the title. It reads like a standard. It is not one — it is American Airlines’ published box, which Frontier and Allegiant happen to match, and which five other carriers undercut.

Southwest is the one that surprises people, because its box is bigger in two dimensions and smaller in one. A 14 in bag is half an inch over a 13.5 in limit, and half an inch is enough. The full carrier table.

United publishes the tightest box in the US market

17 × 10 × 9 in is 1,530 cubic inches. American’s 18 × 14 × 8 is 2,016. United’s published personal item is 24% less volume than American’s, and the binding dimension is width: 10 in, where most bags in this category publish 13 or 14.

The bags, and what they actually clear

Two things worth sitting with. First, the two bags built to the “standard” publish neither a weight nor a warranty term, which costs them two of our four scoring axes outright. Second, the bag that publishes both — and publishes the best warranty on this site — fits nothing as a personal item, because it is 19 inches long.

That is the honest shape of this category: the products designed to the box are anonymous and undocumented, and the well-documented products are not designed to the box.

Soft bags compress, and we still will not promise it

The Narwey is a foldable, unstructured bag. Published dimensions for a bag like that are measured unpacked, and a half-full soft bag genuinely does squash into a sizer its spec sheet says it should not.

We are not going to build a recommendation on that, because we have not tested it and because a gate agent decides, not a spec sheet. What we will say is the shape of the risk: soft and under-filled is forgiving; structured and full is not. If you are flying United, do not plan around compressing a 14 in bag into a 10 in slot. That is not compression, that is hoping.

What to buy

• Flying American, Frontier or Allegiant → the Narwey at a published 18 × 14 × 8 in and 30 L. It is exactly the published box and it folds flat when not in use, which makes it a good second bag to bring for the return leg. Its con: Narwey publishes no weight, no price and no warranty term — three of our four axes unscoreable. You are buying a shape, not a specification.
• You need the personal item to be the work bag → the MATEIN, same published 18 × 14 × 8 in with a laptop compartment. MATEIN publishes a warranty against defects “for as long as you own it” without stating a term. Its con: an open-ended warranty with no published term is weaker than it sounds, and no weight is published either.
• Flying United, JetBlue, Breeze, Southwest or Sun Country → none of these. You need a bag built to 17 × 13 × 8 in or smaller, and for United specifically 17 × 10 × 9. Buy for the tightest carrier on your itinerary. Personal-item backpacks ranked.
• You want one bag that is also the trip daypack → the Osprey Daylite Plus at 1.31 lb and $80, with the best warranty posture on this site. Just do not count on it as your personal item — at 19 in long it is over every published box.

Three carriers publish nothing, and that cuts both ways

Delta, Alaska and Hawaiian publish no personal-item dimensions at all. Their published wording is functional — it must fit under the seat in front of you.

That is more permissive in practice and less certain in principle. There is no number to measure against, so there is also no number to argue with. A bag that clears American’s box will almost certainly be fine; anything larger is at the discretion of whoever is at the gate. What counts as a personal item.

The rule that makes this simple

Buy for the tightest published box on your itinerary, not the most common one. In practice that means:

• You fly United at all → buy to 17 × 10 × 9 in and everything else is easy.
• You never fly United → 17 × 13 × 8 in clears every other carrier that publishes a box.
• You only fly American, Frontier or Allegiant → the 18 × 14 × 8 shelf is genuinely built for you.
