What to Pack in Your Personal Item
This is the only bag guaranteed to stay with you from the door to the seat. Pack it as the bag you would keep if you lost everything else.

The personal item is the only bag that cannot be gate-checked, because it never needed a bin. Pack it accordingly: medication, documents, every battery, and the laptop. Everything else is optional, and everything on that list is genuinely not.

Pack it as the bag you would keep
Every other bag on the aircraft can end up somewhere you are not. A carry-on is taken at the door when the bins fill; a checked bag misses a connection you made. The personal item stays under the seat in front of you from boarding to landing.
So the packing rule is simple: if losing it for 48 hours would be a problem, it goes in here. Not in the roller, not in the hold. Why this bag is defined by a location.
The four that are not optional

The battery row is the one that catches people, because the failure happens at a jet bridge with thirty seconds of warning. Keep every battery in one pouch and handing over a bag becomes a five-second action. The whole tech kit, in one pouch.
What makes the flight itself better
- An empty water bottle, filled after the checkpoint. Cabin air is dry and the cart comes round twice. Which bottle, and the depth problem.
- Solid snacks. No quantity limit, no declaration, no argument. What food actually clears security.
- A layer. Cabins are cold and it costs nothing worn.
- Earplugs, and a mask on a night flight. Under an ounce, and better at the noise that actually wakes people than any headphone. Why that is true.
- A 3.5 mm adapter for the seatback system, which is still a 3.5 mm socket.

Which is why 20 L is the size that works: enough for the list, small enough to slide under a seat. Bags built for that box.
What does not belong in it
- Clothes beyond one change. Your wardrobe goes in the bag that can be checked, because if it is delayed you have lost clothes rather than prescriptions.
- The neck pillow. Clip it to the outside. At 0.73 lb and 5.5 in deep it is the bulkiest object most people try to fit inside, for four hours of use.
- Full-size toiletries. They belong in the checked bag where there is no volume limit. The 3-1-1 rule.
- Anything you will not touch in flight or need on landing. That is the test for everything not on the non-negotiable list.
How to pack it
- Liquids bag in an outer pocket. It has to come out at the checkpoint; make that one movement.
- Laptop in its own compartment, reachable without opening the main body.
- Battery pouch in the same outer pocket as the liquids. Both are things you may be asked for, and it is the pocket you can reach standing up.
- Medication where you can hand it over whole. Declaring medically necessary liquids is one sentence if the officer can see them. The declaration in full.
- The layer on top, because you will want it an hour in.
