The trade a garment bag makes

It is the lightest way to move tailoring. A published 1.5 lb is less than half the weight of the lightest wheeled carry-on in our ledger and a third of a typical hard case — and unlike every one of them, it keeps the garment hanging.

What you pay is shape. A suit carrier is long and flat, and an overhead bin is neither. Folded to fly, it becomes a thick rectangle that fits awkwardly beside wheeled cases, and it holds hanging garments and almost nothing else.

The published numbers

The folded arithmetic, which nobody publishes

A 40-inch garment bag does not fly at 40 inches. It folds in half over the shoulder strap, which is how it goes in a bin — and that changes its dimensions completely.

The 22 in width is the problem, and it does not go away by folding again — that dimension is the width of a shoulder, and a suit carrier cannot be narrower than the jacket it carries.

In practice garment bags are widely carried in cabins and rarely measured, because they are soft, they drape, and they do not look like the thing a sizer was built for. We are not going to tell you it will be fine — we are telling you it is over the published box, and that if a gate is measuring, this is not a bag that argues well. Every carrier’s published box.

The alternative that fits the box

For one suit on a two-night trip, folding it into a normal carry-on is a genuinely good answer, and the technique matters more than the bag.

• Turn one shoulder inside out and nest the other into it. That single move is what stops a lapel creasing, and it is free.
• Fold once over the softest thing in the case, not against a hard shell wall.
• Pack it last, on top. Weight on tailoring is what sets a crease. The full method.
• Hang it up on arrival and run a hot shower. Most travel creases drop out in twenty minutes of steam.

When the garment bag is clearly right

• More than two suits. Six hangers is a lot of tailoring, and folding six garments into a case is a bad idea however good your technique.
• A wedding, a conference, a court appearance — anywhere the garment has to be right on arrival with no time to steam it.
• Checking it deliberately. At 1.5 lb it is the lightest checked bag imaginable, and the 62 linear inch rule is no obstacle at 40 × 22 × 3. When to check.
• Not: one suit and a weekend’s clothes, where you now carry two bags to do one bag’s job.
