How to Choose a Weekender Bag

What two nights actually needs

Anything over about 50 L is not a weekender. It is a week bag, and buying one for weekends means carrying an underfilled bag that has lost its shape.

It should still clear a sizer

The reason to care: a weekend bag is the bag most likely to be taken on a short flight where you had no intention of checking anything.

The strap decides whether you like it

Capacity is a number and carrying is an experience, and the second one is what you remember. A 30 lb duffel on a thin shoulder strap is genuinely unpleasant after ten minutes.

• A padded, non-slip shoulder strap is the minimum. An unpadded webbing strap concentrates the entire load on one narrow line of your shoulder.
• Removable backpack straps are better still. Several duffels in our ledger publish them as standard rather than as an accessory, and that converts a long terminal or a set of stairs from a chore into a non-event.
• Grab handles that meet in the middle — with a wrap or a snap — so the bag can be carried in one hand without the handles splaying.
• A pass-through sleeve that drops over a rolling case handle, if this is your second bag on longer trips.

None of these is exotic and all of them are published. A bag that lists none of them is telling you something.

The shape problem

A duffel has no structure, which is its advantage and its cost. Packed full it holds a good shape; packed to a third it is a sagging bag with everything at the bottom.

This is the strongest argument for not buying the largest option. A 45 L bag holding a weekend’s 25 L is a bag that has lost its shape and is now harder to carry, not easier.
