How to Pack for a Beach Trip
Beach clothing is the lightest wardrobe you will ever pack. The bag still fills up, because almost nothing you take to a beach is clothing.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
A beach wardrobe is the lightest you will ever pack — and the bag still fills, because sunscreen, towels and after-sun are volume, not clothing. The real constraint is the 0.95 L liquids quart, and the real risk is sand in a zip.

The packing problem is inverted
Every other trip on this site is a weight-and-volume problem where clothing dominates. A beach trip is not.
| Category | On a city trip | On a beach trip |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | ~60% of the bag | ~25% |
| Shoes | ~10% | ~5% — sandals are 1 L |
| Liquids and sun care | ~5% | ~25%, and capped at a quart in the cabin |
| Towels, beach gear, wet bag | 0% | ~30% |
Which means the standard advice — roll your clothes, use one cube — solves the smallest part of the problem. The interesting decisions are about liquids and about what sand does.
Sunscreen is the binding constraint
Sunscreen, after-sun and insect repellent are all liquids or creams, and all three are things you want a lot of. The TSA quart bag is 0.95 L total including the air between bottles, which realistically holds six to nine containers of 3.4 oz.
A week in strong sun uses more sunscreen than that, comfortably. Three options, in order of how well they work:
- Buy it at the destination. Sunscreen is sold everywhere there is a beach, usually more cheaply than at an airport, and it removes the problem entirely.
- Use stick sunscreen. A solid stick is not a liquid, gel, aerosol, cream or paste — so it travels outside the quart bag with no limit. Why solids beat the rule.
- Check a bag. There is no volume limit for ordinary toiletries in the hold, and a beach trip is one of the four cases where checking genuinely wins. The four cases.
What sand and salt actually do
This is the part that costs money later, and almost nobody plans for it.
| Hazard | What it damages | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Sand in a zip | The zip — it is abrasive and it grinds the teeth | Vacuum it out dry. Never wash sand out, wetting makes it grip |
| Sand in wheel housings | Bearings, permanently | A duffel has no wheels to protect |
| Salt water on fabric | Corrodes zips and holds moisture against the fabric | Rinse in fresh water the same day |
| Damp gear stored in a bag | Mildew in the lining — permanent smell | A dedicated wet bag, and dry everything before packing home |
Two conclusions follow. A duffel is the better beach bag than a wheeled case, because it has no wheel housings and it rinses. And a sealed wet bag is genuinely worth carrying, because damp swimwear packed for the flight home is how a lining gets colonised. What to do afterwards.
The list
- Two swimsuits. One is drying while you wear the other. This is the only item where two is genuinely necessary.
- Three or four light outfits. Beach clothing is thin and rolls to almost nothing — a whole week fits in a single 18 L cube.
- One cover-up that works over a swimsuit and at dinner.
- Sandals worn, one other pair packed. Sandals are about 1 L, which is a rounding error. The shoe arithmetic.
- A quick-dry towel, if the accommodation does not supply one. A cotton beach towel is 5 L and takes a day to dry.
- A layer. Evenings by water are colder than people plan for.
- A wet bag, sealed.
- An empty water bottle, filled after the checkpoint. Heat and a long day make this the highest-value item on the list. Which bottle.
Which bag
| Bag | Published weight | Capacity | Why for a beach trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | 1.4 lb | 45 L | No wheels to fill with sand, rinses, and 45 L for the towels |
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | 1.81 lb | 40 L | Inside the carry-on box on all three sides |
| Samsonite Omni PC 20 in | 7.05 lb | Not published | Wheels, housings, and nothing fragile to protect |
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.
1 · Maximum published volume that still clears a 22 × 14 × 9 in sizer
Osprey Daylite Duffel 45
45 L inside the standard carry-on box for $95 and a warranty with no stated end date — the cheapest cost per covered year of any bag in this ledger.
- Published size
- 21 × 14 × 9 in
- Weight
- 1.4 lb
- Capacity
- 45 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.03 lb/L
- Cost per covered year

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
- 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
- 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack
What you give up
- 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
- No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
- Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · A single cube doing the whole job in a 40 L bag
Peak Design Packing Cube (Medium)
18 L in one cube for 5.1 oz, with a divider that separates worn clothes from clean — the only cube here that solves the second half of a trip.
- Published size
- 12.6 × 12.6 × 6.7 in
- Weight
- 0.32 lb
- Capacity
- 18 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.02 lb/L
- Cost per covered year

- Published list price
- $39.95
Warranty Peak Design lifetime guarantee
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 18 L in 5.1 oz is 0.018 lb per liter, the best carry efficiency in the packing category
- Halves in depth from 6.7 in to 3.1 in as it empties
- Dual compartments keep clean and dirty apart without a second bag
What you give up
- $39.95 for one cube against $59 for a three-cube Eagle Creek set
- 12.6 in square footprint wastes corners in a 14 in wide case
- Compression here reduces the cube, not the clothes inside it
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $39.95 ÷ 20 yr = $2.00/yr; $39.95 ÷ 18 L = $2.22/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 0.32 lb ÷ 18 L = 0.018 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: Peak Design published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Published compressed at 12.6 × 12.6 × 3.1 in and expanded at 12.6 × 12.6 × 6.7 in. The expanded figure is used here.
3 · A duffel that will actually pass a gate sizer
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Duffel 40L
The only 40 L duffel here whose published dimensions fit the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on box on all three sides.
- Published size
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in
- Weight
- 1.81 lb
- Capacity
- 40 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.05 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $7.45/yr
- Published list price
- $149
Warranty Limited lifetime warranty
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
- 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
- $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty
What you give up
- No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
- Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
- A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

4 · Filling after the checkpoint and never buying airport water again
Nalgene Wide Mouth Sustain Bottle (32 oz)
0.95 L of published capacity is, to within a rounding error, exactly the TSA quart — the same volume that caps your entire liquids allowance, in a bottle you carry through empty.
- Published size
- 8.25 × 3.5 × 3.5 in
- Weight
- 0.39 lb
- Capacity
- 0.95 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.41 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $0.85/yr
- Published list price
- $16.99
Warranty Nalgene lifetime guarantee
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- $16.99 published under a lifetime guarantee is $0.85 per covered year
- 6.25 oz for 32 oz of capacity, and the wide mouth takes ice and filters
- Published leakproof and dishwasher safe, which most collapsible bottles are not
What you give up
- 8.25 in tall and rigid — it does not compress when empty the way a soft flask does
- 3.5 in diameter competes with a laptop for the flat space in a personal item
- It must be empty at the checkpoint, every time, without exception
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 5.0/10 — $16.99 ÷ 20 yr = $0.85/yr; $16.99 ÷ 0.95 L = $17.88/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 0.0/10 — 0.39 lb ÷ 0.95 L = 0.411 lb/L
- Warranty & support 6.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: Nalgene published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Nalgene publishes a height of 8.25 in and a diameter of 3.5 in. The diameter is repeated on two axes for consistent formatting.
5 · A hard shell that survives being sat on by the bag above it
Samsonite Omni PC Carry-On Spinner (20 in)
Skip this one. Skip a hard case for a beach trip. It publishes 7.05 lb of polycarbonate to protect contents that are mostly fabric and plastic bottles - and sand gets into wheel housings and stays. A 1.4 lb duffel carries the same load and rinses out.
The most widely sold polycarbonate carry-on in America, and the one whose published height actually meets the 22 in standard — the width is what fails it.
- Published size
- 22 × 15 × 9.75 in
- Weight
- 7.05 lb
- Capacity
- Not published
- Weight per liter
- Not published
- Cost per covered year
- $12.75/yr
- Published list price
- $127.49
Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- Full polycarbonate, which flexes under impact and returns rather than shattering
- $12.75 per covered year
- 22 in published height meets the standard US carry-on height exactly
What you give up
- 15 in width and 9.75 in depth are both over the 14 × 9 in standard
- 7.05 lb of the 25 lb Hawaiian cap is gone before you pack
- Published price varies by colorway, which makes the value figure a moving target
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.6/10 — $127.49 ÷ 10 yr = $12.75/yr
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 4.0/10 — 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: Samsonite published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Samsonite's own store published $101.99 to $127.49 across colorways on 3 September 2026. The higher figure is used here so the value arithmetic is not flattered.
