How to Clean a Travel Backpack
The machine is the fastest way to clean a pack and the fastest way to destroy the coating you paid for. Everything below follows from that.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
Do not put it in a washing machine. Agitation and detergent strip the TPU or DWR coating that makes a pack water-resistant, and that coating does not come back. Hand-wash in cold water with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and air dry only — never a tumble dryer.

Why the machine is the problem
Almost every travel pack worth owning has a coating: a TPU laminate bonded to the fabric, or a DWR treatment on the surface, or both. That coating is what the “weatherproof” in the spec sheet refers to.

None of this shows up immediately. The pack comes out clean, and three months later it wets through in rain that it used to shed. What the coating actually is.
The method
- Empty every pocket. All of them. There is a pen in one of them and it is going to be a problem.
- Shake it out and vacuum the interior. Most of what is in a pack after a trip is crumbs and sand, and it comes out dry.
- Close every zip before washing. Open zips catch and distort.
- Fill a bath or a tub with cold water. Cold, not warm.
- Use a soft brush and, if needed, a technical wash designed for coated outdoor fabrics rather than ordinary detergent.
- Spot-clean rather than submerging where you can. Most packs need three dirty areas cleaned, not a full bath.
- Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Residue is worse than the dirt was.
- Hang it upside down, open, out of direct sun. Upside down so water drains out of the pockets rather than pooling in the base.
- Dry it completely before storing. Days, not hours.
Two things that genuinely ruin a pack
- A tumble dryer. Heat delaminates coatings and can melt synthetic fabric outright. There is no version of this that is safe.
- Storing it damp. A pack zipped shut in a closet with moisture in the base grows mildew in the lining, and mildew stains permanently and smells permanently. It is the single most common way a pack becomes unpleasant.
Add to that: no bleach, no solvent, no pressure washer, and no direct sunlight for long periods — UV degrades nylon over time, which is why polyester is specified on bags that live outdoors.
Specific problems

| Salt water | Rinse in fresh water the same day. Salt is abrasive and hygroscopic — it holds moisture against zips and corrodes them. |
| Sand | Vacuum, do not wash. Sand in a zip is what destroys the zip, and wetting it makes it grip. |
| A stiff or sticky zip | Clean the teeth with a toothbrush and water, dry, then a dry lubricant. Never oil — it collects grit. |
| Something spilled inside | Spot-clean immediately. Dried sugar in a lining attracts insects in storage. |
| Peeling coating | Not fixable. This is usually the result of a previous machine wash. |
How to store it between trips
- Completely dry. The rule that matters most.
- Empty, unzipped, and not compressed. Long-term compression sets creases in coated fabric and stresses zip teeth.
- Not in a plastic bag. It traps moisture, which is the mildew condition.
- Out of sunlight. UV is slow and cumulative.
- Loosely stuffed with a towel if it is a structured pack you want to keep its shape.
Restoring water resistance
DWR is a surface treatment and it wears off — that is expected rather than a fault. It is renewable with a spray-on or wash-in treatment made for technical fabrics, and heat from a warm iron over a cloth or a low dryer setting is sometimes specified to reactivate it.
A bonded TPU laminate is a different thing: it is part of the fabric rather than on it, and once it delaminates it cannot be restored. That is the layer a machine wash destroys, and it is why the distinction between the two is worth knowing before you clean anything.
Check what your maker publishes before applying anything. Where a warranty names no end date — Osprey, Patagonia, Eagle Creek, Peak Design — a pack that has failed prematurely may be a claim rather than a cleaning problem. What each brand publishes.
