The Best Travel Makeup Bag

Makeup bags and toiletry bags are largely the same product with different listings. What genuinely separates them is a wipe-clean lining, structure, and where the brushes go.

By Sawyer V.Last updated

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

The category line is mostly marketing. BAGSMART sells the same product on a page it titles a makeup organizer and lists as a toiletry bag. Three published specs genuinely matter for makeup: a wipe-clean or water-resistant lining, enough structure that powder compacts do not get crushed, and somewhere brushes live separately. Everything else is a toiletry bag decision.

Manufacturer-published figures, compiled 3 September 2026 and re-checked 9 September 2026. We have not tested any of these.

Cosmetic products on a retail display

The two categories are one category

Worth establishing before spending money. The BAGSMART Space Saver Pro is sold on this site as a toiletry bag; the manufacturer’s own product URL for it reads large hanging travel makeup organizer. Same bag, two categories, two sets of search results.

That is not deceptive — it is genuinely both. Which means if you are shopping for a makeup bag, the entire toiletry-bag shelf is your shelf too, and you should judge it on the same published numbers. The toiletry bags ranked.

What follows is the honest short list of what actually differs when the contents are cosmetics rather than shampoo.

The three things that genuinely differ

  • The lining. Foundation and cream products are the messiest things anyone packs. A published water-resistant or wipe-clean lining is the difference between a spill you clean and a bag you replace. BAGSMART publishes water-resistant polyester; Peak Design publishes weatherproof 200D nylon; BEIS publishes a poly lining with a water-resistant finish.
  • Structure. A pressed powder in a soft pouch under a pair of shoes arrives as loose powder. This is the one place a heavier, structured case earns its weight — and it is exactly why the purpose-built option is the heaviest thing here.
  • Brush storage. Brushes lying loose against product is the other reliable way to ruin both. A separate compartment or a detachable brush roll is a real feature rather than a marketing one.

Notice what is not on that list: capacity. Your liquids are capped by law at one quart regardless of the bag, and most cosmetics are solids that the rule does not touch. Which of it counts as a liquid.

The published numbers

Manufacturer-published figures. The BEIS case is the only purpose-built cosmetic case here, and the only one not sold through Amazon.

BEIS The Cosmetic Case9.5 × 7 × 4 in1.38 lb$78.00None publishedPoly, water-resistant finish

A factor of 3.5 in empty weight across four bags doing broadly the same job. The structured cosmetic case publishes 1.38 lb; the smallest weatherproof pouch publishes 0.39 lb. That gap is the price of structure, and whether it is worth paying depends entirely on whether you carry pressed powders.

Only one brand here publishes a warranty at all

Peak Design publishes a lifetime warranty on both pouches. BAGSMART and BEIS publish no term whatsoever.

Run that as cost per covered year on our published 20-year convention and the expensive-looking option becomes the cheap one: the 2.5 L Peak Design pouch is $3.00 per covered year at a published $59.95. The BEIS case at $78.00 has no term to divide by, so no figure exists. How the arithmetic works.

Hanging is the feature that changes a trip

Hotel bathroom counters are small, frequently wet, and often the only flat surface in the room. A bag that hangs from a hook or a rail converts vertical space into working space, and it is the single most useful feature in this category.

The BAGSMART Space Saver Pro publishes a hanging design at 12.2 × 9 × 4 in and 0.88 lb, and it also ships a separate transparent quart bag — the piece that actually gets pulled out at security, which almost nothing else in this category supplies. Its con: BAGSMART publishes neither a price nor a warranty term, so two of our four scoring axes cannot be computed for it.

What to buy

  • A minimal routine, carry-on only → Peak Design Small Wash Pouch. 1 L is almost exactly the TSA quart, 0.39 lb, lifetime warranty. Its con: 1 L is genuinely small once brushes are in it, and $49.95 is a lot for a pouch.
  • A full kit that must not get crushed → BEIS Cosmetic Case, with the weight and warranty caveats above, or a hard case if you carry a lot of pressed product. Its con: 1.38 lb empty, no published warranty, and no Amazon buy link on this site.
  • Hotel bathrooms with no counter → BAGSMART Space Saver Pro, for the hanging design and the included quart bag. Its con: nothing published on price or warranty.
  • Jewelry travels separately — chains tangle against everything and a makeup bag has nothing to clip them to. Jewelry cases.

The rule that applies whatever you buy

Liquids, gels, creams and pastes are capped at 3.4 fl oz per container in one quart bag. That catches more of a makeup kit than people expect: foundation, liquid concealer, mascara, cream blush, most primers and any liquid remover.

Pressed powders, sticks, pencils and solid balms are not liquids and are not capped. Which produces the practical packing rule: go solid where you can, because every switch from liquid to stick buys back room in the only bag the government is measuring. Decanting what is left.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · A toiletry bag bought once

Peak Design Wash Pouch (2.5L)

6.5

2.5 L is more than twice the quart of liquid you are legally allowed to carry, under the only lifetime warranty in this category — $3 per covered year for a bag that will outlast the trips.

Warranty Peak Design limited lifetime warranty

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $3.00 per covered year against a warranty with no stated end date
  • 2.5 L published against a 0.95 L legal liquid allowance — sized correctly, not oversized
  • Weatherproof 200D nylon and a clamshell opening that lies flat

What you give up

  • 8.7 oz is not the lightest here
  • $59.95 published is several times what a retail-channel bag lists at
  • No separate clear quart pouch included
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 5.0/10 $59.95 ÷ 20 yr = $3.00/yr; $59.95 ÷ 2.5 L = $23.98/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency 3.4/10 0.54 lb ÷ 2.5 L = 0.216 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 8.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · Carry-on-only travel with a minimal routine

Peak Design Small Wash Pouch (1L)

5.9

1 L is almost exactly the quart the TSA allows, which makes this the only toiletry bag here sized to the actual legal constraint rather than to a shelf.

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 1 L published capacity is within 5% of the 0.95 L quart limit
  • 6.2 oz, the lightest published weight in this category
  • Same lifetime warranty as the larger pouch

What you give up

  • $49.95 for 1 L is the highest cost per liter on this site
  • Too small for a full skincare routine or a shared bag
  • No clear pouch, so the liquids still come out loose at a checkpoint
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 5.0/10 $49.95 ÷ 20 yr = $2.50/yr; $49.95 ÷ 1 L = $49.95/L

What it does well

  • Includes a separate transparent bag sized to the 3-1-1 rule
  • 14.1 oz published for the large size
  • Rolls to 12.2 × 4 × 9 in, which lies flat along the top of a carry-on

What you give up

  • No warranty term published
  • 14.1 oz is heavy for a bag that holds a quart of liquid
  • No published capacity figure for the main compartment

4 · Keeping chains untangled without giving up a corner of the bag

BAGSMART Travel Jewelry Organizer Case

What it does well

  • 1.5 in deep published, so it packs flat rather than as a block
  • Published necklace clips and ring rolls, which is what stops tangling
  • 0.66 lb published, against jewelry boxes that publish considerably more

What you give up

  • No published price on a manufacturer channel, and no warranty term
  • PU leather with no published thickness or grade
  • Soft-sided: it prevents tangling, not crushing
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.

5 · A makeup kit that has to survive being packed under other things

BEIS The Cosmetic Case

5.6

Skip this one. Skip it on the arithmetic. It is the purpose-built option and it publishes 1.38 lb empty - more than three times the Peak Design 1 L pouch - with no warranty term published at all. It is also not sold through Amazon, so this site carries no buy link for it. Buy it if a structured wipe-clean box is worth 1.38 lb to you; know that is what you are paying.

A published 1.38 lb empty is the heaviest thing in this category by a distance — you are buying a wipe-clean structured box, and structure is what weighs.

What it does well

  • Published water-resistant poly lining, which is the specification that matters when something leaks
  • A detachable brush compartment, so brushes do not lie loose against product
  • $78.00 published, which is a real number to judge against

What you give up

  • 1.38 lb empty — more than a 40 L travel backpack weighs per liter of what it carries
  • BEIS publishes no warranty term at all

Common questions

What is the difference between a makeup bag and a toiletry bag?
Very little — BAGSMART sells one product as both. What genuinely differs for makeup is a wipe-clean or water-resistant lining, enough structure that pressed powders do not get crushed, and separate brush storage.
What is the best travel makeup bag?
For a minimal kit, the Peak Design Small Wash Pouch: 1 L, a published 0.39 lb, weatherproof 200D nylon and a lifetime warranty. For a full kit that must not get crushed, a structured cosmetic case — accepting that the purpose-built one publishes 1.38 lb empty and no warranty term.
Does makeup count towards the liquids rule?
Liquids, gels and creams do — foundation, liquid concealer, mascara, cream blush, most primers. Pressed powders, sticks, pencils and solid balms do not. Switching a liquid for a stick buys back room in the quart bag.
How heavy should a travel makeup bag be?
Our ledger spans 0.39 lb to 1.38 lb empty for bags doing broadly the same job — a factor of 3.5. The extra weight buys structure, which is worth it only if you carry pressed powders that crush.
Is a hanging makeup bag worth it?
It is the most useful feature in the category. Hotel bathroom counters are small and often wet, and a bag that hangs from a rail turns vertical space into working space.
