The Best Camera Bag for Travel

Camera bags are sold on how much gear they hold. Flying is decided by one dimension nobody puts on the front of the box, and it is depth.

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

Buy the Lowepro Tahoe BP 150 if you want a dedicated camera backpack that flies: published exterior 15.87 × 10.83 × 8.54 in, which clears the published carry-on box at all eleven US carriers in this ledger, at a published 1.76 lb for 11 L. Buy a padded insert instead if you already own a backpack you like — 7.5 L of divided protection at 1.21 lb turns any bag into a camera bag and comes back out again.

Lowepro figures are from Lowepro’s own published product pages; the insert is from its published listing. Compiled 17 October 2026. Lowepro publishes no US list price and no warranty term for either bag. Prices on the buy buttons are live.

Lowepro Tahoe BP 150 Camera Backpack

The number that decides a camera bag is depth

Camera bags are padded on all six sides. That padding is what they are for, and it is also why they are deep — a lens standing on its mount needs vertical room, and a divider system needs walls. Depth is the dimension every US carrier publishes most tightly: 9 in at eight of the eleven carriers in this ledger, 10 in at two, 11 in at one.

So we ran this category through the same arithmetic as every suitcase on this site: published exterior dimensions against each carrier’s published carry-on box, on all three sides, the way a gate sizer works.

Exterior dimensions as published by Lowepro and by TARION's listing, compiled 17 October 2026. Packed volume is the product of the three published exterior figures; share is against the standard 22 x 14 x 9 in box (2,772 cubic inches). Fit was computed against all eleven US carriers in this site's airline table.

The cheapest camera bag is the backpack you already own

A padded insert is a divided, framed box that drops into an ordinary bag. The TARION ShellCore S publishes 7.5 L, 8.9 × 6.5 × 11 in and 1.21 lb, with five adjustable dividers and a steel-framed top rim so it holds shape inside something soft.

Put next to the Tahoe, the arithmetic is interesting: the insert is 68% of the Tahoe’s published capacity at 69% of its published weight — and it does not commit you to carrying a camera bag on the days you are not carrying a camera. For the travel backpack you already fly with, or a daypack, that is usually the better answer on a trip that is not a photography trip.

The cost is real and should be said: an insert has no straps, no back panel and no harness. It is a box. Its 1.21 lb of padding rides on top of whatever bag holds it, and it does not spread a load the way a built camera pack does.

Camera bag as personal item, and why it usually works

Most people do not put a camera bag in the overhead. It goes under the seat as the personal item, which has a tighter published box than the carry-on at every carrier that publishes one at all. The Tahoe’s 15.87 in height is longer than most published personal-item boxes, so it is a carry-on-sized object, not a guaranteed under-seat one.

That is worth a minute before a cheap fare. Our page on what counts as a personal item has the published boxes; the short version is that a basic economy ticket that allows only a personal item is the ticket on which a camera backpack becomes a problem.

What Lowepro does not publish

Both Lowepro pages give a full dimension table, an interior size, a weight and a capacity in liters — more than most bag makers publish. Two things are missing, and they are the two that would have moved these bags up the scoring:

  • No US list price. Both product pages show a “Starting from” field with no value in it. That means the Value axis on this site cannot be computed for either bag, because there is no published price to divide.
  • No warranty term. The pages name a “Lowepro Limited Consumer Warranty” covering defects in material or workmanship and publish no duration anywhere on the product page. A warranty with no published term scores zero on this site, the same as no warranty at all, because there is nothing to divide a price by.

The capacity and dimension figures are real, published and checkable, which is why these bags score at all. Compare that with the luggage brands that publish a term and the gap in this category is obvious.

Which one, and who should skip it

  • A body, two lenses and a flight: Lowepro Tahoe BP 150. Published 11 L, published 1.76 lb, clears all eleven boxes. Skip it if your kit is bigger than that — 11 L is one body and a couple of lenses, full.
  • A camera for part of the trip: TARION ShellCore S insert. Skip it if you want straps and a back panel, because it has neither.
  • A working kit you are driving to: Lowepro Flipside 500 AW II. Skip it if it has to fly in the cabin — see the skip note on its card below.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · A mirrorless body, two lenses and a tablet, as your personal item

Lowepro Tahoe BP 150 Camera Backpack

5.6

An 11 L camera backpack at a published 1.76 lb that clears the published carry-on box at every US carrier in this ledger - which the bigger camera bags here do not come close to doing.

Warranty Lowepro Limited Consumer Warranty, no term published

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Published 1.76 lb empty - 0.16 lb per liter, light for a padded camera bag
  • Published exterior 15.87 x 10.83 x 8.54 in clears every published US carry-on box
  • UltraFlex panel folds down, so the camera space becomes clothes space on a day off

What you give up

  • 11 L total: one body, a couple of lenses, and that is the bag full
  • Lowepro publishes no warranty term and no US list price
  • No published material specification beyond weather-resistant
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency 5.6/10 — 1.76 lb ÷ 11 L = 0.160 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 0.0/10 — no published term (0 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

Specs: Lowepro published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Lowepro publishes 40.3 x 27.5 x 21.7 cm exterior and 36 x 25.5 x 12.8 cm interior. The exterior figure, converted to inches, is the one used here, because the exterior is what a gate sizer measures. Lowepro publishes no US list price on its own product page - the field reads Starting from with no value. Retail-channel pricing only.

2 · Carrying a camera for part of a trip rather than all of it

TARION ShellCore S Camera Insert (7.5 L)

5.5

The cheapest camera bag is the backpack you already own. A published 7.5 L of padded, divided storage at 1.21 lb turns any bag into a camera bag, and it comes back out when the trip is a beach trip.

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Published 7.5 L and 1.21 lb - two thirds the volume of the Tahoe at two thirds its weight
  • Published steel-framed rim, so the cube holds shape in a soft bag
  • Comes out of the bag, so you are not carrying camera padding on camera-free days

What you give up

  • No straps, no back panel and no harness - it is a box, not a bag
  • Published 1.21 lb of padding is dead weight on top of whatever bag holds it
  • Published to fit one body and five lenses, which is less than it sounds once packed
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.

3 · Driving to a shoot, or checking the bag and accepting that

Lowepro Flipside 500 AW II Camera Backpack

2.1

Skip this one. Skip it if the bag has to come into the cabin. Lowepro publishes an exterior depth of 32 cm - 12.6 in - and the published carry-on limit at all eleven US carriers in this ledger is 9 in or less. It clears none of them, which makes a bag full of lenses a checked bag or a gate-check, and gate-checking lenses is the situation this whole page exists to avoid.

35 L of padded camera storage with a body-side access panel, in a bag whose published 12.6 in depth misses every published US carry-on limit by more than three inches. It is a superb bag and it is not a cabin bag.

What it does well

  • Published 35 L with a body-side access panel you can open without setting it down
  • Published All Weather cover, which the Tahoe does not have
  • Published laptop compartment 27 x 38 cm, big enough for a working laptop

What you give up

  • Published 12.6 in deep against a 9 in limit at every US carrier in this ledger
  • Published 4.52 lb empty - 2.6 times the Tahoe before a lens goes in
  • No published warranty term and no published US list price
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers

Common questions

What is the best camera bag for air travel?
The Lowepro Tahoe BP 150, on published dimensions. Its published exterior of 15.87 x 10.83 x 8.54 in clears the published carry-on box at all eleven US carriers in this site's airline table, at a published 1.76 lb for 11 liters. If you already own a backpack you like, a padded insert is both cheaper and smaller.
Will a camera backpack fit as a carry-on?
It depends entirely on depth, and large ones do not. The Lowepro Flipside 500 AW II publishes a 12.6 in exterior depth against a published 9 in limit at eight of eleven US carriers and 10-11 in at the other three - so it clears none of them. The 11 L Tahoe BP 150, at a published 8.54 in deep, clears all eleven.
Is a camera insert better than a camera backpack?
For a trip that is not primarily a photography trip, usually yes. The insert here publishes 7.5 liters at 1.21 lb, against 11 liters at 1.76 lb for a dedicated camera backpack - and it lifts out on the days you leave the camera behind. The trade is that an insert has no straps, no back panel and no harness.
Can you put a camera in checked luggage?
You can, and it is a bad idea. Airline baggage liability is capped and cameras and lenses are commonly named in carriers' published limits and exclusions for valuables, so a damaged or missing body is often not covered at replacement value. If the gear will not fit in the cabin, the honest conclusion is that the bag is the wrong bag.
How many liters is a travel camera backpack?
The two Lowepro bags here publish 11 L and 35 L, and the gap is the whole story: 11 L is a body, two lenses and a tablet in a bag that flies, and 35 L is a multi-body kit in a bag that does not. The padded insert sits below both at a published 7.5 L.
