Is the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L Worth It?
It costs $115 more than the Osprey Farpoint 40 and weighs 1.25 lb more. The published figures say that premium buys exactly one capability - and whether it is worth it depends entirely on whether you use it.

On every published axis except capacity range, the Peak Design comes last or close to it: the highest price, the highest weight, the worst weight per liter, the highest cost per covered year, and no published airline-damage cover. That is not an accident — it is the price of the one thing it does that the others do not.
What the $115 buys: an expandable pack
Peak Design publishes an expandable range — roughly 22 × 13 × 9 in compressed to 35 L, and 22 × 13 × 11 in expanded to 45 L. The Osprey packs are fixed at 40 L.
That is genuinely useful in one situation: an itinerary where the outbound and the return have different published limits, or a trip where you leave light and come home heavy. Compressed, it is a smaller bag for a strict box; expanded, it is a bigger bag for a roomier one. The European boxes.
At its published standard setting the depth is 9.5 in — half an inch over the 22 × 14 × 9 in box six US carriers publish. Compressed, Peak Design publishes roughly 9 in. So on a strict US carrier the expansion is not a bonus; it is how you make the bag fit. The carrier boxes.

The weight, against a cap
4.52 lb empty is 20.5% of Ryanair’s published 10 kg cabin cap and 18% of Hawaiian’s 25 lb. The Farpoint 40 is 14.8% of the Ryanair cap. On a carrier that weighs cabin bags, that difference is a pair of shoes. Which carriers publish a cap.

- Worth it if your trips genuinely swing between a strict box and a roomy one, or you routinely come home heavier than you left — and you value a weatherproof canvas.
