Is the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Worth It?

The fabric is the reason to want it

Cotopaxi publishes a recycled 840D TPU-coated nylon with 840D ballistic ripstop panels. For comparison, the toughest duffel in our ledger publishes 600D with 1680D reinforcement, and Osprey publishes no denier figure for the Farpoint at all.

That matters more on a 2.93 lb pack than it would on a heavy one, because the usual way to make a bag light is to make the fabric thin. The Allpa is the one pack here that is both the lightest thing on the shelf and the better-specified shell. What denier figures do and do not tell you sets the limits on that claim.

The other hardware argument is the opening. Cotopaxi publishes a full clamshell with four mesh-fronted internal compartments, which is the closest thing to a suitcase layout in a pack this light.

The warranty has no number on it

Cotopaxi publishes the Guaranteed for Good policy — repair, replace or store credit — and states no term. Not lifetime, not ten years, not anything. Cover is at the company’s discretion.

We treat that as a real cost rather than a technicality, for two reasons. It means the pack cannot be placed on our cost-per-covered-year axis at all, so a buyer cannot compare it on value with anything that does publish a term. And it means the promise can change without breaching anything.

Ten inches is the other problem

Cotopaxi publishes 22 × 12 × 10 in. Width is excellent — two inches inside the 14 in limit. Depth is the issue: 10 in against a 9 in standard means it fails at the six US majors and clears 4 of the 11 carriers we track.

It shares that result with the Farpoint, which misses by only a tenth of an inch, so this is not a reason to prefer one over the other. It is a reason to know which carrier you are flying before you rely on either as your only bag. Every published carry-on box, carrier by carrier.

Thirty-five liters is a different trip

The Allpa publishes 35 L against 40 L for both alternatives. Five liters is roughly a pair of shoes and a sweater — the difference between a long weekend and a week, for most people.

If you already pack light that is a feature: a smaller bag you fill is easier to carry than a bigger one you half fill, and 2.93 lb empty is the lowest starting point here. Where 30 to 35 L makes sense covers that trade properly.

The verdict

Buy it if

You want the lightest pack with the best-published fabric, you pack to 35 L rather than wishing for more, and you are comfortable buying on hardware rather than on a written promise. The clamshell layout is genuinely better than a top-loader for travel.

Skip it if

You expect the maker to stand behind the bag in writing. For $5 less the Farpoint 40 publishes five more liters and the broadest guarantee language any maker on this site publishes, at a 0.34 lb weight penalty. The two compared directly.

If fit comes first
