Are TSA Luggage Locks Worth It?
Every TSA-accepted lock ships with a master keyway that screeners can open. Knowing exactly what that leaves you with is the difference between a useful ten dollars and a false sense of security.

A TSA-accepted lock is built to be opened by a screener with a master key, so it is not security — it is tamper evidence and a deterrent against a casual hand. That is worth roughly $10 to $20. What it cannot do is stop anyone who is willing to open a zipper with a ballpoint pen, which takes seconds and leaves the lock intact.

What “TSA-accepted” actually means
It means the lock carries a secondary keyway that security screeners in participating countries can open with a master key, so they can inspect a bag without cutting the lock off. Master Lock publishes recognition for its 4688D in 29 countries.
Read that sentence again as a security statement: the lock is designed so that a set of master keys exists, and the design of those keys has been public for years. A TSA lock is a promise that your bag will be searched without being damaged. It was never a promise that nobody can open it.
What it does prevent, which is not nothing
- The bag falling open. The single most common failure on a checked bag is a zipper that walks open under compression on a belt. A lock holds the two pulls together, and so does a $11 strap.
- The casual hand. An opportunist rummaging through unattended bags goes to the unlocked one first. Deterrence is relative, not absolute.
- Tamper evidence. A lock that is missing, cut or has been re-dialled tells you something happened. So does a TSA inspection notice inside the bag.
What it does not prevent
A zipper on a soft bag can be opened with a ballpoint pen and re-closed by running the pulls back over the parted teeth. The lock stays locked the whole time. This is not obscure knowledge — it is the reason serious anti-theft bags publish interlocking zipper designs and steel cabling instead of relying on a padlock.
A lock also does nothing about the two failure modes that actually cost travelers money: the bag going to the wrong city, and the bag not arriving at all. A tracker in the bag addresses the first, and the claim process addresses the second.
The cheaper thing that does most of the job

For a checked bag, a strap is the better ten dollars. It solves the zipper problem the lock solves, and it also solves the problem of identifying one black suitcase among two hundred black suitcases, which the lock does not. The straps compared.
The verdict
- Buy one if you check bags regularly and want the zipper held shut with a deterrent attached. At ten dollars it is cheap insurance against the dumbest failure mode.
- Buy a strap instead if your bag is soft-sided, you have had a zipper walk open, or you have ever stood at a carousel squinting at identical suitcases.
- Do not buy one if you are trying to protect something valuable in a checked bag. The correct answer there is not to check it — what to carry on instead is the page for that.
One thing worth saying plainly, since this is a site that sells things: the honest recommendation on this page is the $11 strap, not the $179.95 safe. They solve different problems, and only one of them is a checked-bag problem.
