How to Protect Checked Luggage
One warranty in our entire ledger covers airline handling damage. Everything else you do has to work without that, which changes what is worth doing.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
Airline handling is how checked bags die, and almost no warranty covers it. Exactly one product line in our ledger publishes cover for airline-caused damage, and only once registered. Everything else you do — shell choice, packing, claiming — has to work without a warranty behind it.

The coverage gap
Every warranty in our ledger covers defects in materials and workmanship — a part that was wrong when it left the factory. A wheel sheared off by a belt loader was not defective; it was destroyed.
| Product | Published warranty | Covers airline damage? |
|---|---|---|
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 29 in | Built For A Lifetime, with Trusted Companion Promise | Yes — first year, as published |
| Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX 28 in | 10 year limited | No — defects only |
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | Limited lifetime | Not published |
Which means the party you claim against for handling damage is the airline, not the maker — and that claim has a short window. What each warranty does cover.
What actually protects a bag
- A polycarbonate shell, if the contents are fragile. It flexes under impact and returns, where ABS cracks and fabric transmits. It costs about three pounds of your allowance. The materials compared.
- Packing to fill. A half-empty case flexes and its contents move; a full one is rigid. Fill gaps with soft items rather than leaving voids.
- Nothing rigid against the shell. Put clothing between hard objects and the case wall — the wall is what takes the impact.
- Recessed wheels and handles, which is a design feature rather than something you can add. Protruding hardware is what catches on machinery.
- Removing old tags. A bag with three previous routing tags on it is a bag a scanner can misroute.
Is airport wrapping worth it?
The plastic film service, offered in most international terminals. Honest assessment:
| What it does | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Deters casual pilferage | Yes — this is the real benefit |
| Keeps the bag clean and dry | Yes, genuinely |
| Stops zips bursting on an overpacked bag | Yes |
| Protects against impact damage | No — film is not padding |
| Prevents inspection | No — it will be cut and not replaced |
A TSA-accepted lock achieves most of the same deterrence, costs once rather than per flight, and survives inspection rather than being cut off. Why that matters.
The claim window is the thing that matters
Damage claims are decided by what you do in the first twenty minutes at the destination, not by what your bag is made of.
- Inspect the bag at the carousel, before you leave the baggage area. Carriers publish short windows for damage claims and leaving weakens the claim substantially.
- Photograph the damage there, with the bag tag in frame.
- Report it at the baggage desk immediately and get a written reference number before you walk away.
- Keep the tag and the boarding pass. The tag is the identifier that links your bag to their system.
- Then your travel insurance, then a card with baggage cover if the trip was booked on one — in that order, because each will ask what the airline said.
The full procedure when a bag does not arrive at all.
What should never be in there
Carriers publish exclusions from checked-baggage liability for valuables, electronics, documents and jewelry. That is in the conditions of carriage and it is not negotiable at a desk afterwards.
- Spare lithium batteries and power banks — prohibited outright, not merely excluded. The battery rules.
- Medication — a delayed bag is a delayed prescription.
- Laptops, cameras, documents, jewelry — excluded from liability.
- Anything irreplaceable. The rule with no exceptions.
Before you close the bag
- Photograph the packed contents. Thirty seconds, and it is the evidence a contents claim is built on.
- Put a tracker inside, in the middle rather than clipped outside. Which tracker.
- Put your name and number inside as well as on an exterior tag. Tags come off; the interior card survives.
- Weigh it. Overweight fees are the most predictable cost in travel and the easiest to avoid. The arithmetic.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.
1 · A duffel that will actually pass a gate sizer
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Duffel 40L
Skip this one. Skip it if the contents are fragile. It is the best-value checked duffel we track at 1.81 lb and a limited lifetime warranty - and a soft bag transmits impact to whatever is inside it. For clothes it is ideal; for anything that must not be crushed it is the wrong container.
The only 40 L duffel here whose published dimensions fit the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on box on all three sides.
- Published size

Warranty Limited lifetime warranty
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
- 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
- $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty
What you give up
- No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
- Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
- A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.81 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.045 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

2 · iPhone households, and checked bags that need finding at the other end
Apple AirTag (2nd generation)

Warranty Apple one year limited warranty
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- Second-generation Ultra Wideband chip published for Precision Finding
- IP67 rated to a published 1 m for 30 minutes, which covers a wet baggage belt
- User-replaceable CR2032 rather than a sealed battery
What you give up
- Requires an Apple device — there is no Android pairing path at all
- Apple publishes no price on the specification page
- One year warranty is the shortest term of any product in this ledger
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

Specs: Apple published technical specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Apple publishes a diameter of 1.26 in (31.9 mm) and a height of 0.31 in (8.0 mm). The figure here repeats the diameter on two axes so the ledger's dimension formatting still works. Apple's published technical specification page does not carry a price. The Value axis is not scored for this tracker.
3 · Checked travel where weight allowance is tighter than size allowance
Travelpro Maxlite 5 Large Check-In Expandable Spinner (29 in)
8 lb for a 29 in case is genuinely light, but the published overall size is 65 linear inches — three over the 62 in cap almost every US carrier applies to checked bags.

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty with the Trusted Companion Promise, which Travelpro publishes as covering airline-caused damage for the first year
Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.
What it does well
- 8 lb published for a 29 in case leaves 42 lb of payload inside a 50 lb checked cap
- The published warranty covers airline-caused damage for the first year, which almost nothing else does
- Expands 2 in, which is the return leg solved
What you give up
- 65 published linear inches is over the 62 in cap most US carriers apply to checked bags
- Softside means the shell protects contents less than a hard case would
- No manufacturer-published price to compute cost per covered year
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers

- 100% polycarbonate flexes under the impacts a checked bag actually receives
- $25.99 per covered year on a published 10 year warranty
- 64.25 published linear inches is closer to the 62 in cap than most 28 in cases
What you give up
- 10.96 lb empty is 22% of a 50 lb checked allowance
- Still over the 62 linear inch cap most US carriers publish
- The published warranty covers defects, not airline handling damage
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 3.9/10 — $259.99 ÷ 10 yr = $26.00/yr
