British Airways Baggage Rules
British Airways publishes a wider box than the US standard and a 23-kilogram weight cap. US travelers arrive prepared for the first and not the second.

British Airways publishes a cabin bag of 56 × 45 × 25 cm up to 23 kg, plus a 40 × 30 × 15 cm handbag or laptop bag. The box is wider than the US standard; the 23 kg weight cap is the figure US travelers most often arrive unprepared for.

Both bags are included on the standard allowance, which puts BA among the more generous carriers in our table on volume — and among the strictest on weight, which is the pairing that catches people.
Wider than the US standard, not smaller
The instinct among US travelers is that European carriers are stricter. On BA that is false on size and true on weight.

A bag sized for the US standard fits BA on every dimension with room to spare. The column that changes is the last one. The wider international picture.
23 kilograms is generous, and it is enforced
23 kg is 50.7 lb — the most generous cabin weight cap in our table by a wide margin. Ryanair publishes 10 kg, easyJet 15 kg, and Hawaiian, the tightest US figure, publishes 25 lb.
So the number itself is rarely the problem. The problem is the habit: a US traveler who has never had a cabin bag weighed does not weigh it, and the first time it happens is at a European desk. At 50.7 lb most packing clears easily — but a heavy case plus two weeks of clothing does not.
There is a second consideration people miss: you have to lift 23 kg into an overhead bin. The published cap is not a recommendation. Weighing it at home costs about $11.
The second bag is a real allowance
BA’s 40 × 30 × 15 cm handbag is 15.7 × 11.8 × 5.9 in — noticeably smaller than most US personal-item boxes, and specifically much shallower at 5.9 in against the US 8 or 9 in.
That shallowness is the constraint to plan for. A US personal-item bag with a rigid water bottle or a padded laptop sleeve is frequently over 15 cm deep, even though its footprint is fine. Bags and their published depths.

What to buy for British Airways
- A US-standard bag is fine. BA’s box is wider and deeper, so nothing needs replacing on size.
- Weigh it. This is the change of habit BA asks of a US traveler, and it is the only one.
- Check the second bag on depth. 15 cm is shallow — about 5.9 in — and it is where US personal-item bags fail.
- Do not buy for BA’s width. 17.7 in is three and a half inches over the US standard, and a bag built for it fails at home.
