Hawaiian Airlines Baggage Rules

Hawaiian publishes the standard box and the tightest weight cap of any US carrier we track. On a 25-pound allowance, the empty bag is a real line item.

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

Hawaiian publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in for the carry-on — the US standard — and a 25 lb cabin weight cap, the tightest in our table. It publishes no personal-item dimensions. On a 25 lb allowance the empty case is between 6% and 37% of everything you are permitted.

Four US carriers in our table publish a cabin weight limit: Hawaiian at 25 lb, and Frontier, Breeze and Sun Country at 35 lb. Hawaiian’s is ten pounds tighter than any of them. The full weight comparison.

What the empty bag costs you

On a carrier publishing no weight limit, the weight of an empty case is a comfort question. At 25 lb it is an allowance question, and the spread across our ledger is enormous.

Eight pounds of payload separates the top and bottom rows — roughly a week of clothing, decided entirely by which bag you bought. On a carrier publishing no cap that difference is invisible; here it is the whole decision.

The duffel argument is strongest here

A duffel spends nothing on wheels, a telescoping handle or a frame, and on a weight-capped carrier that saving converts directly into clothing.

The Osprey Daylite Duffel publishes 45 L of capacity at 1.4 lb more capacity than any wheeled case in our ledger, at a quarter of the weight. What you give up is wheels, structure and protection. The full trade-off.

For a Hawaii trip specifically — where the packing list skews light and the walk from a rental car is short — that trade lands better than it does on a business itinerary through three terminals.

Weigh it before you leave

This is the carrier where the habit pays. A bathroom scale by difference is accurate to about a pound: stand on it holding the bag, then without it, and subtract. Against a 25 lb cap that is enough precision.

If you want the number properly, a hanging scale publishes 0.1 lb graduation for about $11 — less than any overweight fee anywhere, and it works in a hotel room on the return leg, which is the leg that goes over. The scale in detail.

No published personal-item box

Hawaiian is one of three carriers in our table — with Delta and Alaska — publishing no under-seat dimensions. The rule is functional: it must fit under the seat in front of you.

Size against United’s published 17 × 10 × 9 in and you are inside anything Hawaiian’s seats present. What a personal item actually is.

Bags whose published dimensions fit Hawaiian Airlines's carry-on box

Bags whose published dimensions fit Hawaiian's 22 x 14 x 9 in box. On this carrier the weight column matters at least as much — check the published empty weight alongside the fit.

What to buy for Hawaiian

  • Buy on weight first. This is the one US carrier in our table where that is straightforwardly correct.
  • Consider a duffel. 45 L at 1.4 lb leaves you 23.6 lb of payload — nothing wheeled comes close.
  • If you want wheels, the lightest hard case in our ledger publishes 4.43 lb, which is a reasonable 18% of the cap.
  • Weigh the bag at home, both directions. The return leg is the one that goes over.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Maximum published volume that still clears a 22 × 14 × 9 in sizer

Osprey Daylite Duffel 45

45 L inside the standard carry-on box for $95 and a warranty with no stated end date — the cheapest cost per covered year of any bag in this ledger.

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
  • 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
  • 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack

What you give up

  • 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
  • No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
  • Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 9.5/10 $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency 10.0/10 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 10.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

Warranty Limited lifetime warranty

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
  • 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
  • $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty

What you give up

  • No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
  • Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
  • A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.0/10 $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

3 · Southwest, Frontier and Sun Country flyers who want a lifetime warranty

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner (21 in)

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 5.4 lb for 46 L is 0.12 lb per liter, the lightest carry-on in this ledger
  • Lifetime limited warranty covering wheels, zippers and handles at a $160 published price
  • Softside give means an overstuffed bag still closes

What you give up

  • Published overall height of 23 in fails the 22 in limit at American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian
  • No published airline-damage cover
  • Fabric shell scuffs where a hardshell would only mark
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.1/10 $160 ÷ 20 yr = $8/yr; $160 ÷ 46 L = $3.48/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
  • Carry efficiency 7.3/10 5.4 lb ÷ 46 L = 0.117 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 8.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

Specs: Travelpro published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Travelpro publishes both a 21 × 14 × 9 in case size and a 23 × 14.5 × 9 in overall size. The overall figure is the one a gate sizer measures, so it is the one used here.

4 · Anyone who wants a front laptop pocket on a hard shell

LEVEL8 Road Runner Carry-On (20 in)

4.7

Skip this one. Skip it for Hawaiian, decisively. A published 9.3 lb empty is 37% of a 25 lb allowance gone before you pack anything - the worst figure in this ledger against the tightest cap in the table. It is a good case on a carrier that publishes no weight limit and the wrong one here.

The only hard case here with a published height under 22 in, and it pays for that with the worst weight-per-liter figure in the ledger.

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 21.5 in published height is genuinely under the 22 in standard
  • Front-opening laptop pocket that takes a 15.6 in machine
  • $9.50 per covered year against a lifetime warranty

What you give up

  • 9.3 lb for 35 L is 0.27 lb per liter, more than double the Maxlite 5
  • 14.4 in width is still a fifth of an inch over the 14 in standard
  • The lightest thing in the bag will be the bag's own dead weight allowance
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 6.6/10 $189.99 ÷ 20 yr = $9.50/yr; $189.99 ÷ 35 L = $5.43/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency 1.4/10 9.3 lb ÷ 35 L = 0.266 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 6.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

5 · Hawaiian's 25 lb carry-on cap, and anyone lifting a bag overhead unaided

Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 4.43 lb empty leaves over 20 lb of payload inside Hawaiian's 25 lb published cap
  • Polypropylene flexes and returns where ABS cracks
  • 7.9 in depth is the slimmest here, which is what actually decides a tight bin

What you give up

  • 15.8 in width fails the 14 in limit at six US carriers
  • No published price, so we cannot compute cost per covered year
  • Light shells transmit more impact to what is inside them
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
  • Warranty & support 4.0/10 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

Specs: American Tourister published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. American Tourister lists the Airconic on its own store but did not publish a price we could read on 3 September 2026, so the Value axis is not scored for this bag.

Common questions

What is Hawaiian Airlines' carry-on weight limit?
25 lb — the tightest published cabin-bag cap in our table, ten pounds under Frontier, Breeze and Sun Country. Seven of the eleven US carriers we track publish no figure at all.
What size carry-on does Hawaiian Airlines allow?
22 × 14 × 9 inches, the US standard. The size is unremarkable; the 25 lb weight cap is what makes Hawaiian different from the other carriers sharing that box.
How much does an empty suitcase weigh against a 25 lb limit?
Between 6% and 37% of it, across our ledger. A 1.4 lb duffel leaves 23.6 lb of payload; a 9.3 lb hard case leaves 15.7. That is roughly a week of clothing decided at purchase.
What is Hawaiian Airlines' personal item size?
Hawaiian publishes no personal-item dimensions — the rule is that it must fit under the seat in front of you. Size against United’s published 17 × 10 × 9 inches and you are inside anything Hawaiian presents.
