Duffel vs Suitcase
Same capacity, four pounds apart. A duffel spends nothing on wheels, a frame or a handle - and that is exactly what it gives up as well.

A duffel spends nothing on wheels, a telescoping handle or a frame — and that is roughly four pounds. The Osprey Daylite Duffel publishes 45 L at 1.4 lb; the Travelpro Maxlite 5 publishes 46 L at 5.4 lb. What you give up is rolling, structure and a shape that survives being packed full.

Where the four pounds goes
A wheeled case is not heavier because it is better made. It is heavier because it contains four things a duffel does not: wheels, a telescoping handle, a frame to mount them to and a rigid or semi-rigid shell to keep the whole assembly square.
Those four items are also, in order, the things that break on a suitcase. A duffel has almost nothing that can fail: a zip, some fabric and two straps.
The best weight-per-liter figure on this entire site belongs to a duffel — the Osprey Daylite at 0.031 lb/L, nearly four times better than the lightest wheeled case here. That is not a small edge; on a 10 kg Ryanair cap it is four pounds of extra clothing.
Capacity inside the same box
The more surprising finding. A duffel fits more inside the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on box, because it has no frame, no wheel wells and no handle channel stealing interior volume.
| Bag | Published box | Capacity | Fits the standard box? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | 21 × 14 × 9 in | 45 L | Yes, at exactly 14 in wide |
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | 22 × 12.5 × 9 in | 40 L | Yes, on all three dimensions |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On | 23 × 14.5 × 9 in | 46 L | No — 23 in tall |
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | 21 × 13.7 × 10.6 in | 40 L | No — 10.6 in deep |
The Osprey publishes 45 L inside a box that fits, while a wheeled case needs 23 in of height to reach 46 L. That is the structural argument for a duffel stated as plainly as it can be. What a carry-on holds, by format.
What you give up, honestly
- Wheels. This is the whole trade. A long terminal, a delayed connection or a heavy pack and a duffel is carried on a shoulder while a case rolls beside you. Nothing on this page makes that go away.
- Structure. A duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer. A hard case is the same dimensions empty or bulging, which is the one area where rigidity is genuinely an advantage.
- Protection. Fabric transmits impact; a polycarbonate shell absorbs it. If you carry anything fragile, that matters.
- Organization. Most duffels are one large void, which is why they pair naturally with packing cubes and suitcases mostly do not need to.
Cost per covered year
Duffels win this too, and by more than the capacity comparison. The Osprey Daylite publishes $95 under a warranty that names no end date — $4.75 per covered year, the lowest figure of any bag on this site.
| Bag | Published price | Warranty | Cost per covered year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | $95 | Lifetime | $4.75 |
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | $149 | Lifetime | $7.45 |
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | $159 | Lifetime, refund included as a remedy | $7.95 |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On | $160 | Lifetime | $8.00 |
Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee is the only warranty in this ledger that lists refund alongside repair and replacement — a genuinely different promise from everyone else, and worth noting even though the bag fails the sizer test on depth.
Which to buy
- Short terminals, light packing, tight weight caps → duffel. The Osprey Daylite at 1.4 lb for 45 L is the best pure carry-efficiency figure on this site.
- Your carrier measures → Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler, the only 40 L duffel here inside the standard box on all three dimensions.
- Long airport walks, heavy loads, or a back that objects → wheeled case, and pay the four pounds. Comfort over a mile of terminal is worth more than four pounds of allowance to most people.
- Anything fragile → a hard case, and it is not close. Fabric transmits what a shell absorbs.
- Checked travel → different question entirely. The 62-linear-inch problem governs that one.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
- 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
- 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack
What you give up
- 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
- No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
- Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

Warranty Limited lifetime warranty
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
- 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
- $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty
What you give up
- No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
- Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
- A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

3 · Southwest, Frontier and Sun Country flyers who want a lifetime warranty
Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner (21 in)
The best weight-per-liter figure of any softside carry-on here, and the cheapest route to a lifetime warranty — but the published overall height is 23 in, which is an inch over the limit at most US carriers.
- Published size
- 23 × 14.5 × 9 in
- Weight
- 5.4 lb
- Capacity
- 46 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.12 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $8/yr
- Published list price
- $160
Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty
Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 5.4 lb for 46 L is 0.12 lb per liter, the lightest carry-on in this ledger
- Lifetime limited warranty covering wheels, zippers and handles at a $160 published price
- Softside give means an overstuffed bag still closes
What you give up
- Published overall height of 23 in fails the 22 in limit at American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian
- No published airline-damage cover
- Fabric shell scuffs where a hardshell would only mark
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.1/10 — $160 ÷ 20 yr = $8/yr; $160 ÷ 46 L = $3.48/L
- Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
- Carry efficiency 7.3/10 — 5.4 lb ÷ 46 L = 0.117 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: Travelpro published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Travelpro publishes both a 21 × 14 × 9 in case size and a 23 × 14.5 × 9 in overall size. The overall figure is the one a gate sizer measures, so it is the one used here.
4 · A carry-on that becomes a backpack when the terminal is long
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L
Skip this one. Skip it for gate sizers specifically. It publishes 10.6 in of depth against a 9 in standard, which fails at six US carriers - and unlike the width overage on most bags, depth is the dimension a sizer catches first. It is an outstanding bag for checked travel and the wrong duffel for a carrier that measures.

Warranty Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund
Fits 1 of 11 US carriers: SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
- Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
- Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory
What you give up
- 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
- $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
- A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.8/10 — $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
- Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY
- Carry efficiency 9.9/10 — 2.06 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.052 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

5 · Hawaiian's 25 lb carry-on cap, and anyone lifting a bag overhead unaided
American Tourister Airconic Carry-On Spinner
At 4.43 lb it is the lightest hardside carry-on in this ledger by nearly a pound, which matters most on the carriers that publish a weight cap.
- Published size
- 21.7 × 15.8 × 7.9 in
- Weight
- 4.43 lb
- Capacity
- Not published
- Weight per liter

Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 4.43 lb empty leaves over 20 lb of payload inside Hawaiian's 25 lb published cap
- Polypropylene flexes and returns where ABS cracks
- 7.9 in depth is the slimmest here, which is what actually decides a tight bin
What you give up
- 15.8 in width fails the 14 in limit at six US carriers
- No published price, so we cannot compute cost per covered year
- Light shells transmit more impact to what is inside them
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 4.0/10 — 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: American Tourister published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. American Tourister lists the Airconic on its own store but did not publish a price we could read on 3 September 2026, so the Value axis is not scored for this bag.
