Travelpro publishes both 21 in carry-ons at the same capacity under the same lifetime warranty. The difference that matters is one clause, and it only matters if the bag leaves your hands.

Same capacity, same warranty length, same repair route. The Platinum Elite is $230 more — 2.4 times the price — and 2.4 lb heavier. The one published line where it wins outright is airline-damage cover.
The clause that separates them
A carry-on that never leaves your hands is almost never damaged by an airline. A carry-on that is gate-checked at a full flight, or checked at the desk, goes through exactly the handling that breaks wheels and handles.
Travelpro publishes airline handling damage as covered for the Platinum Elite and not for the Maxlite 5. That is a genuinely rare clause in this category — most warranties, including both Samsonite and American Tourister terms on this site, cover defects only. Brands ranked on warranty posture.
Gate-checking is more common than it used to be as overhead bins fill. What happens at the door. If that is a regular part of your flying, the clause is worth money; if your bag is always in the bin, it is worth nothing.
2.4 lb is a quarter of a carrier’s cap
Against Hawaiian’s published 25 lb cabin cap, the Maxlite 5 is 21.6% of the allowance empty and the Platinum Elite 31.2%. The gap — 9.6 percentage points — is spent on ballistic nylon and a sturdier build rather than on anything you pack. Which carriers publish a cap.
Neither fits the strict box
