Samsonite vs Delsey
Both are old, both publish ten years of coverage, both sell polycarbonate. The separation is weight, published price, and how close each gets to the box airlines actually publish.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
Samsonite, on the published numbers. Its lightest carry-on here is 6.5 lb against Delsey’s 8.4 lb — a 1.9 lb gap, or 29% more bag before you pack. Both publish a 10 year warranty. The decider is that Samsonite publishes prices on its own store and Delsey did not, and a value figure you cannot compute is a value figure you cannot trust.
Figures read from each maker’s published material and compiled 3 September 2026. We have not tested either brand.

The four bags, as published
| Bag | Published size | Linear in | Weight | Published price | Shell |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX (20 in) | 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in | 46.25 | 6.97 lb | Not published | Polycarbonate |
| Samsonite Omni PC (20 in) | 22 × 15 × 9.75 in | 46.75 | 7.05 lb | $127.49 | Polycarbonate |
| Samsonite Freeform (21 in) | 23 × 15 × 10 in | 48 | 6.5 lb | $129.99 | Polypropylene |
| Delsey Helium Aero (21 in) | 22.5 × 15.25 × 10 in | 47.75 | 8.4 lb | Not published | Polycarbonate |
Start with the uncomfortable line at the bottom of that caption: none of these four fits the standard box as published. That is not a Samsonite problem or a Delsey problem, it is a hardside problem — a shell needs wall thickness and a wheel housing, and airlines measure the outside of all of it. How airlines measure.
Weight is where the brands actually separate
Nineteen tenths of a pound sounds like nothing until you express it as a share. Delsey’s 8.4 lb is 29% heavier than the Freeform’s 6.5 lb, and on a carrier publishing a 25 lb cabin cap that difference is 7.6% of everything you are permitted to carry — spent on the case rather than on what goes in it. Which carriers publish a cap.
It is also the one specification you cannot change later. Shell material, color options and even the warranty are things you can reason about; the empty weight is simply subtracted from every trip you take with the bag, for the decade the warranty covers.
The warranties are the same, and that is the point
| Samsonite | Delsey | |
|---|---|---|
| Published term | 10 years | 10 years |
| Wording | Limited 10 year global warranty | 10 year limited warranty |
| Published repair route | Not published | Not published |
| Covers airline handling damage | No | No |
Ten years each, and neither publishes cover for airline handling damage — which is the single most likely way a hardside case dies. That is worth sitting with: the warranty on both brands covers manufacturing defects, and the thing that actually breaks your bag is a baggage system. Brands that do publish airline-damage cover exist, and they are a different tier. The brands ranked on warranty posture.
Because the terms are identical, the warranty cannot break the tie. Which throws the decision onto price — and that is where the comparison ends abruptly.
One brand publishes prices and one did not
On 3 September 2026 Samsonite’s own store published $127.49 for the Omni PC and $129.99 for the Freeform. No US price for the Delsey Helium Aero was readable on the manufacturer’s own site, so its cell reads Not published and its Value axis is not scored.
We could have borrowed a number from a reseller and made the table look complete. That is exactly the practice this site exists to avoid: a reseller’s price is not the manufacturer’s published price, it changes weekly, and presenting one as the other is how a comparison becomes fiction. What happens to a score when an input is missing.
The consequence is decisive rather than neutral. On a like-for-like question — two legacy brands, identical warranty terms, similar shells — the brand that publishes its numbers is the one you can hold to them.
Polypropylene, polycarbonate, and which to want
Three of these four publish polycarbonate. The Samsonite Freeform publishes polypropylene, and it is the lightest bag in the comparison at 6.5 lb — which is not a coincidence.
- Polycarbonate flexes under impact and returns to shape. It is the material to want if the bag will be checked, and it is why it dominates the category.
- Polypropylene is lighter and cheaper to mold, and more prone to taking a permanent dent rather than springing back.
- Neither affects the parts that actually fail. Wheels, handles and zipper tracks kill more bags than shells do, and no shell polymer helps them. The materials, ranked.
So the Freeform is a genuine trade rather than a straight win: you buy 0.55 lb of lightness with a shell that is less forgiving of a hard knock. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether you check the bag.
Which gets closest to the box
If fitting a sizer is what you care about, the ranking is narrow and clear. The Winfield 3 DLX publishes 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in — over the standard box by a quarter-inch of height, half an inch of width and half an inch of depth. That is the smallest overage of any hard case in our ledger.
The Delsey publishes 22.5 × 15.25 × 10 in, over on all three by a wider margin, and the Freeform’s 23 × 15 × 10 in is the largest here. In practice the Freeform is a Southwest and Sun Country bag — those two publish 24 × 16 × 10 and 24 × 16 × 11 and it clears both comfortably. Every carrier’s box.
The verdict
- Buy Samsonite on these four bags. It is lighter, it publishes its prices, and it offers the same warranty term.
- Which Samsonite: the Winfield 3 DLX if clearing a sizer is the priority, the Omni PC if you want polycarbonate at a published price, the Freeform if you fly Southwest or Sun Country and want the lightest shell.
- Skip the Delsey Helium Aero — heaviest here, over the box on every dimension, and no published price to weigh it against.
- Neither brand is the value leader on this site. Both publish a 10-year term with no repair route and no airline-damage cover. If warranty posture is what you are buying, look at the makers who publish no stated end date. The durability ranking.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.
1 · A hard shell that survives being sat on by the bag above it
Samsonite Omni PC Carry-On Spinner (20 in)
The most widely sold polycarbonate carry-on in America, and the one whose published height actually meets the 22 in standard — the width is what fails it.
- Published size
- 22 × 15 × 9.75 in

- 7.05 lb

- Cost per covered year
- $12.75/yr
- Published list price
- $127.49
Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty
Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- Full polycarbonate, which flexes under impact and returns rather than shattering
- $12.75 per covered year
- 22 in published height meets the standard US carry-on height exactly
What you give up
- 15 in width and 9.75 in depth are both over the 14 × 9 in standard
- 7.05 lb of the 25 lb Hawaiian cap is gone before you pack
- Published price varies by colorway, which makes the value figure a moving target
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.6/10 — $127.49 ÷ 10 yr = $12.75/yr
- Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 4.0/10 — 10 yr (4 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.
Specs: Samsonite published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Samsonite's own store published $101.99 to $127.49 across colorways on 3 September 2026. The higher figure is used here so the value arithmetic is not flattered.
2 · Southwest and Sun Country flyers who want a hard shell
Samsonite Freeform Carry-On Spinner (21 in)
Polypropylene at a polycarbonate price and 6.5 lb for a hard case is genuinely good — but the published 23 × 15 × 10 in box is over the limit on every dimension at the big three.
- Published size
- 23 × 15 × 10 in
- Weight
- 6.5 lb

- Published list price
- $129.99
Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty
Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- $13 per covered year on a 10 year global warranty
- 6.5 lb is light for a hardside of this size
- Polypropylene is the most crack-tolerant of the mainstream shell plastics
What you give up
- 23 × 15 × 10 in fails American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian on all three dimensions
- No published capacity figure
- The published price is a promotion against a stated $219.99 comparable value, so it moves
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.5/10 — $129.99 ÷ 10 yr = $13.00/yr
- Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

3 · Buyers who want polycarbonate and the smallest published overage
Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Spinner (20 in)
The closest any polycarbonate case in this ledger gets to the 22 × 14 × 9 in standard box, missing it by a quarter-inch of height and half an inch of width.

- 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in

What it does well
- 22.25 × 14.5 × 9.5 in is the tightest published box of any hard case here
- Polycarbonate shell with a mounted TSA lock
- 1.5 in expansion for the return leg
What you give up
- Still fails the 22 × 14 × 9 in limit at six US carriers, by a small margin
- No manufacturer-published price on 3 September 2026, so cost per covered year cannot be computed
- No published capacity figure
The arithmetic behind the score

Specs: Samsonite published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Samsonite's own store did not publish a price for the 20 in Winfield 3 DLX on 3 September 2026 — only for the large spinner in the same line. Rather than borrow a reseller's number, the Value axis is not scored for this bag.
4 · Nothing in this ledger — see the alternatives above it
Delsey Paris Helium Aero Carry-On Spinner (21 in)
Skip this one. Skip it on this comparison. At a published 8.4 lb it is the heaviest carry-on in our ledger, its published 22.5 x 15.25 x 10 in box misses the standard limit on all three dimensions, and no US price was readable on the manufacturer's own site - so the value arithmetic cannot even be run. Every Samsonite here does more with less.

What it does well
- Two-compartment layout with a lined divider and tie-down straps
