How to Pack a Checked Bag
A checked bag is handled by machinery and by people who cannot see inside it. Packing for that is a different problem from packing a bag you carry.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
Pack it full. A half-empty case flexes when it is dropped and its contents move; a full one is rigid and behaves as one object. The binding limit is 50 lb of weight rather than space — which is the opposite of a carry-on.

The consequence: a carry-on is packed to fit, and a checked bag is packed to survive being handled by people who do not know what is inside it.
Rule one: fill it
Counterintuitive, because a half-empty bag feels safer. It is not.
A case packed to capacity is a rigid object: the contents brace the walls, nothing shifts, and a drop is absorbed across the whole structure. A half-empty one flexes on impact, and everything inside it travels the length of the case and hits the end.
- Fill voids with soft items — socks, underwear, a towel. Anywhere you can see a gap, something soft goes in it.
- Use the internal tie-down straps if the case has them. They exist for exactly this.
- If the bag genuinely will not fill, you brought too large a bag. Use a smaller one and enjoy the linear-inch margin. The 62-inch arithmetic.
Rule two: keep rigid things off the shell
The shell takes the impact. Anything rigid pressed against it takes the impact too, from the inside.

The last row matters more than people think: a heavy object resting on soft goods for twelve hours arrives having pressed a permanent shape into them. The pressure-at-a-fold-line mechanism.
Rule three: the 50 lb arithmetic
The empty case is inside the limit, and the spread across our ledger is large.

Nine pounds of payload separates the top and bottom rows — a fifth of the allowance, decided at purchase. And unlike size, weight is always measured, because a bag cannot be tagged without going on a scale. What overweight actually costs.
Weigh it at home. A bathroom scale by difference is accurate to about a pound, and a hanging scale publishes 0.1 lb graduation for about $11 — less than any overweight fee anywhere.
What the hold is good for
Checked baggage has no volume limit for ordinary toiletries, which is the single biggest practical advantage of checking a bag.
- Full-size toiletries, decanted into containers with real seals and bagged. Bottles leak at altitude because the pressure inside them exceeds the hold pressure.
- Anything sharp. This is where it belongs.
- Sunscreen and other bulk liquids, which a quart bag cannot hold. The 3-1-1 rule.
And what must never go in
- Spare lithium batteries and power banks — prohibited outright.
- Medication, which a delayed bag turns into a real problem.
- Laptops, cameras, documents, jewelry — carriers publish exclusions from liability for all of them.
- Anything irreplaceable. Why the exclusion matters more than the risk.
Before you close it
- Photograph the packed contents — the evidence for any contents claim.
- Put a tracker in, in the middle rather than clipped outside.
- Name and phone number on a card inside, as well as an exterior tag.
- Remove old routing tags, which confuse scanners.
- Weigh it. Then weigh it again before the return leg.

Skip this one. Skip compression in a checked bag, which inverts our carry-on advice. Compression exists to win volume you do not have - and in a checked bag the binding limit is 50 lb of weight, not space. Compressing to make room for more weight is solving the wrong constraint.
