Why size is the first number, not pockets

On a flight with a baby, the diaper bag is the bag you cannot be separated from: it holds the milk, the changes, the wipes and the medication. A carry-on can be taken at the door and put in the hold; the personal item stays under the seat in front of you. What goes in the cabin bag with a baby.

So the bag has to be a personal item — and personal-item boxes are published, and they are smaller than most diaper bags. Whether your particular carrier lets a diaper bag travel as an extra item is a policy question for that airline; the safe assumption is that it has to fit the box.

The box test

The Skip Hop is interesting because it sits exactly on the 18 × 14 × 8 in box that American, Frontier and Allegiant publish — 14 and 8 in right at the limit — and misses the rest on its 14 in width. The lining matters more than the pocket count

A diaper bag will, at some point on a trip, have milk, formula or worse inside it. The specification that decides whether that is a wipe or a ruined bag is the lining.

2.63 lb is heavy for a bag, and it is the price of vegan leather and a structured, wipeable body. On a carrier publishing a cabin weight cap it counts; on most US carriers, which publish none, it counts only against your shoulders. Which carriers publish a cap.

What it should be carrying

• Milk, formula and baby food — exempt from the 3-1-1 quantity limit in reasonable amounts, but declared at screening. The exemptions.
• Twice the diapers you think, plus a full change of clothes for the child and a shirt for you.
• Medication and documents, which never go in a bag that can be taken at the door.
• Nothing that belongs in the carry-on. A diaper bag stuffed to bursting is the one most likely to fail the box.
