Family Travel Packing Mistakes

1. One big suitcase for the family

It feels tidier and it fails three ways at once.

Split each person’s clothing across two bags. Half of everyone’s wardrobe in each of two cases turns a delayed bag from a crisis into an inconvenience. How often that happens.

2. Not counting the allowance you already have

Every ticketed passenger carries their own entitlement, children included. A family of four on a carrier publishing one carry-on plus one personal item each holds eight bags — and most travel with four.

3. Mixing everyone’s clothes together

The moment that defines a family trip is eleven at night in a hotel room and you need one specific child’s one specific thing. Mixed in a single case that is a five-minute excavation in the dark.

4. Packing for the children instead of with them

A child who packed their own bag knows what is in it, can find their own things, and stops asking you to. That is the operational benefit and it is larger than it sounds over a week.

Give them a cube and a written list of six items. The list is the part that works — it converts “where is my thing” into a question they can answer themselves.

The same logic applies to the bag. A child who chose their pack carries it without being asked, which is the whole reason to give a child a bag at all. Why weight is the only spec that matters there.

5. Buying a child a bag they cannot lift

A bag a child cannot lift is a bag you are carrying, on top of your own — which is the opposite of the intended effect.

6. Putting the essentials in the wrong bag

The mistake with the most consequence, and it happens at the airport rather than at home.

• All medication, for everybody, in a bag that stays with you. A checked bag can be delayed for days.
• Every battery and power bank — prohibited in the hold, including a bag gate-checked at the door where nothing screens it. The rule in full.
• One change of clothes per child. Children generate laundry emergencies at altitude with impressive reliability.
• Snacks and whatever prevents a meltdown. Not in an overhead bin, where you cannot reach them.

The fixes, in one list

• Count the entitlement before booking. It is larger than you think.
