The Best Travel Sleep Mask

The cabin lights come back on at breakfast whether or not you have finished sleeping. A mask is the only part of that you control, and it comes down to one published number.

Buy the MZOO contoured mask. It is the only mask here that publishes the two numbers that decide a contoured mask: 13 mm of eye-cup depth, so lashes and makeup clear the fabric, and 22 mm of nose padding, which is where cabin light actually gets in. It costs about a third of the Manta and publishes more of its own geometry. Buy the Manta instead if off-the-shelf masks have never sealed on your face — its eye cups detach and move.

Manufacturer-published listing specifications, compiled 17 October 2026. Only one of the three publishes a weight and none publishes a warranty term. Prices on the buy buttons are live.

MZOO Contoured Sleep Mask

Flat or contoured, and nothing else

Every sleep mask ever sold is one of two objects. A flat mask is a piece of fabric with a strap: it rests on your closed eyelids and your lashes. A contoured mask has molded cups that bridge over the eye socket, so the fabric touches your brow and cheekbone and nothing in between.

That is the whole decision, and it is not a matter of taste. If you sleep on your side, the pressure that squashes a flat mask into your eye comes from the pillow, not the strap. If you wear eye makeup, a flat mask takes it off. If you open your eyes under the mask — many people do, without noticing — a flat mask is fabric against an open eye.

The three, as published

The two numbers, and who publishes them

Cup depth is how far the molded cup stands off your eye. MZOO publishes 13 mm. That is the figure that decides whether your lashes brush the inside of the mask with every blink, and it is the specification most contoured masks simply do not print.

Nose padding is the depth of the foam that fills the gap beside the bridge of your nose. MZOO publishes 22 mm. Almost all of the light that reaches your eyes inside a mask comes through that gap, which is why a mask that fits your forehead perfectly can still be useless.

Manta publishes neither number. What it publishes instead is a mechanism: the eye cups detach and reposition, so the spacing is set to your face rather than to an average one. That is genuinely a different kind of answer, and it is the right one if fixed cups have never worked for you — but it is an answer you cannot check on paper before it arrives.

What each one costs you in a bag

Only Manta publishes a weight: 1.47 oz. In a category where the whole product weighs less than a bread roll, weight is not the constraint — thickness is. A contoured mask has rigid cups that do not compress; a flat silk mask folds down to the bulk of a handkerchief and can live in a jacket pocket rather than in the bag.

That is the real trade on this page. The contoured masks are better at the job. The flat mask is better at not being a thing you have to carry. If you are packing to a strict carry-on and the flight is three hours, the silk mask is a perfectly honest answer.

Which one, and who should skip it

  • Most people, including side sleepers: MZOO. Published 13 mm cups, published 22 mm nose padding, published 19–28 in strap. Skip it if fixed cups have never sat right on your face, because these do not move.
  • A face nothing fits: Manta. The cups detach and reposition, which nothing else here can do. Skip it if you want to know the geometry before you buy, because Manta publishes none of it.
  • Minimum bulk: Alaska Bear silk. Skip it if you sleep on your side or wear eye makeup — see the skip note on its card below.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Side sleepers, and anyone who wants lashes clear of the fabric

MZOO Contoured Sleep Mask

0.0

The only mask in this group that publishes the two numbers that actually decide a contoured mask: 13 mm of cup depth and 22 mm of nose padding. It costs about a third of the Manta and publishes more of its geometry.

What it does well

  • Published 13 mm eye-cup depth, so lashes and makeup clear the surface
  • Published 22 mm nose padding, which is where light actually leaks in
  • Published strap range of 19-28 in, the widest adjustment published here

What you give up

  • Cups are fixed, so a face they do not suit cannot be adjusted for
  • No published weight
  • Memory foam and contoured cups pack thicker than silk
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth not scored — No published dimensions to check against carrier limits.
  • Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
  • Warranty & support 0.0/10 — no published term (0 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · A face that no off-the-shelf mask has ever sealed against

Manta Original Sleep Mask

0.0

The only mask here whose eye cups detach and move, which is the one thing that decides whether a contoured mask seals on your face or presses on your cheekbone. It is also the only one that publishes a weight.

What it does well

  • Detachable eye cups reposition for eye spacing, which no fixed mask can do
  • Published 1.47 oz, the only published weight in this group
  • Published machine washable with the cups still attached

What you give up

  • Several times the price of either alternative here
  • The cups are the bulk: this packs thicker than a flat silk mask
  • No warranty term published

3 · Back sleepers who want something that disappears into a pocket

Alaska Bear Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask

0.0

Skip this one. Skip it if you sleep on your side, wear eye makeup, or open your eyes under the mask. A flat silk mask rests directly on the lids and lashes, which is exactly what the two contoured masks above are built to avoid - and Alaska Bear publishes no cup depth, because there is no cup. It is still the right buy if what you want is something that folds to the bulk of a handkerchief.

A flat silk mask packs to nothing and costs almost nothing, and that is the entire case for it. It publishes no depth, because it has none - the fabric rests on your eyelids.

What it does well

  • Flat construction, so it folds to roughly the bulk of a handkerchief
  • Published Grade 5A mulberry silk against the skin rather than foam
  • The cheapest way to block most of the cabin light

What you give up

  • No cups, so the fabric sits on the lids and the lashes
  • No published weight and no published dimensions of any kind
  • A flat mask leaks light at the nose more than a contoured one

Common questions

What is the best sleep mask for flights?
The MZOO contoured mask, on published specifications. It is the only mask in this group that publishes both of the numbers that decide a contoured mask: 13 mm of eye-cup depth and 22 mm of nose padding. If fixed cups have never fitted your face, the Manta Original has detachable cups that reposition instead.
Are contoured sleep masks better than flat ones?
For sleeping, yes, and for a specific reason: a contoured mask bridges over the eye socket so nothing touches your lids or lashes, while a flat mask rests directly on them. The flat mask wins on one axis only, which is bulk - it folds to roughly the thickness of a handkerchief and a contoured mask does not compress at all.
What sleep mask works for side sleepers?
One with a shallow outer profile and curved sides, so the pillow does not press the mask into your face. MZOO publishes 15-degree curved sides for exactly this, along with 13 mm cups. A flat mask is the worst option for a side sleeper, because the pillow pushes the fabric straight onto the eye.
Where does light get into a sleep mask?
Beside the bridge of the nose, almost always. It is the one place a flat band of fabric cannot follow the shape of a face. That is why nose padding depth is worth more than any other published figure in this category - MZOO publishes 22 mm, and the other two masks here publish no figure for it at all.
Can you wash a travel sleep mask?
Manta publishes that its mask is machine washable with the eye cups still attached, which is the only published washing instruction in this group. The other two publish no laundering guidance, and foam-filled contoured masks generally do not enjoy a washing machine.
