The Best Travel Gifts

The problem with buying gear for someone who travels is that they already own the obvious things. These six are chosen on a different test: items a frequent traveler needs, knows they need, and still has not bought.

By Sawyer V.Last updated

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

The safest gift here is the luggage scale — cheap, universally useful, and almost nobody buys one for themselves until an airline charges them for being 3 lb over. The AirTag is the best gift for someone who checks bags; Loop Quiet 2 earplugs for anyone who cannot sleep on planes. Avoid the travel pillow unless you know how they sleep.

All six are products already in this site’s ledger with manufacturer-published specifications. Prices on the buy buttons are live and carry their own verification date. We have not tested any of this gear.

Etekcity EL11 Digital Luggage Scale

The test this page uses

Gear gifts fail in three specific ways: the recipient already owns one, it duplicates something their luggage already does, or it only works if it matches a personal preference you do not know. Every pick below is chosen against those three.

Bands describe the current retail range; the live figure is on each buy button with its own verification date. The 'already own one' column is our judgment, not a published statistic.

Why a luggage scale is the one that lands

It is unglamorous and it is the correct answer. A handheld scale costs about the price of two coffees and solves a problem that costs real money: Hawaiian publishes a 25 lb carry-on cap, Frontier, Breeze and Sun Country publish 35 lb, and checked overweight fees start at $100 on Delta for 51–70 lb. See published weight limits and what happens if your bag is overweight.

The Etekcity EL11 publishes 0.3 lb and 5.1 × 2.4 × 1.2 in, with a 2 yr limited warranty — a published warranty term on a product at this price is unusual and it is why this is the one we rank first. It lives in the suitcase permanently and gets used twice a trip.

The two you should check before buying

  • A tracker. AirTags are the most-gifted travel item of the last few years, which means many frequent flyers already have a set. They also only work properly inside the right phone ecosystem — an AirTag is an awkward gift for an Android household, where the Chipolo ONE Point is the better fit. Our AirTag against Chipolo comparison covers which belongs with which phone.
  • A universal adapter. Almost everyone who has taken one international trip owns one. It is a superb gift for a first trip abroad and a dud for anyone else.

The expensive gift, and when it is right

The Bellroy Travel Wallet sits well above everything else here. It publishes eco-tanned leather, RFID protection and a 3 yr warranty against material and workmanship defects, and it holds a passport, cards, a pen and boarding passes in one object.

It is the right gift for one specific person: someone who travels internationally often enough that passport-and-cards is a routine, and who has never upgraded from a bare passport in a jacket pocket. It is the wrong gift for a once-a-year traveler, who will use it twice. Our travel wallet page compares it against the smaller Bellroy pieces.

If the budget is under $25

Three of the six sit there: the scale, the earplugs and the adapter. That is deliberate — travel gear is one of the few categories where the cheap items are genuinely the most used. Our accessories under $25 page has the wider list, with the finding that seven of the eleven products in that bracket publish no warranty term at all.

Before you fly with it

If the gift is traveling with you, do not wrap it. TSA publishes that it “encourages passengers traveling with gifts to use gift bags, which they can easily open” and recommends boxes with removable lids so officers can check the contents without opening fully wrapped presents. Our flying with Christmas presents page covers that and the snow globe rule.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Anyone flying a carrier that publishes a cabin or checked weight cap

Etekcity EL11 Digital Luggage Scale

7.4

A published 0.1 lb graduation against airline weight caps enforced in whole pounds — this is the cheapest way in this ledger to never pay an overweight fee again.

Weight
0.3 lb

Published list price
$10.99

Warranty 2 year limited warranty

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $10.99 published against a 2 year warranty is $5.50 per covered year
  • 110 lb / 50 kg capacity covers a checked bag at twice the standard 50 lb allowance
  • 4.8 oz and 5.1 in long — it lives in the bag it weighs

What you give up

  • A hanging scale needs you to lift the bag clear of the floor, which a heavy checked bag makes awkward
  • 2 year warranty is short next to the luggage it weighs
  • The bathroom-scale method costs nothing and is accurate to about a pound
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 9.6/10 — $10.99 ÷ 2 yr = $5.50/yr
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
  • Warranty & support 0.5/10 — 2 yr (0.5 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · iPhone households, and checked bags that need finding at the other end

Apple AirTag (2nd generation)

Warranty Apple one year limited warranty

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Second-generation Ultra Wideband chip published for Precision Finding
  • IP67 rated to a published 1 m for 30 minutes, which covers a wet baggage belt
  • User-replaceable CR2032 rather than a sealed battery

What you give up

  • Requires an Apple device — there is no Android pairing path at all
  • Apple publishes no price on the specification page
  • One year warranty is the shortest term of any product in this ledger
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Warranty & support 0.5/10 — 1 yr (0.5 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)

Specs: Apple published technical specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Apple publishes a diameter of 1.26 in (31.9 mm) and a height of 0.31 in (8.0 mm). The figure here repeats the diameter on two axes so the ledger's dimension formatting still works. Apple's published technical specification page does not carry a price. The Value axis is not scored for this tracker.

3 · Sleeping on an overnight flight, and the crying child two rows back

Loop Quiet 2 Reusable Earplugs

Warranty No warranty term published — a 100 day return policy is published instead

Fits No published dimensions to check.

What it does well

  • Published 24 dB SNR certified reduction, on irregular noise as well as engine drone
  • Reusable silicone with four ear tip sizes, rather than disposable foam
  • Weighs and packs like nothing, which no over-ear headphone does

What you give up

  • No warranty term published, only a 100 day return policy
  • No published weight, so carry efficiency cannot be scored
  • $24.95 is real money against foam plugs that publish comparable NRR figures
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No published warranty term or capacity to divide the price by.
  • Airline-fit breadth not scored — No published dimensions to check against carrier limits.
  • Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

4 · Phone, tablet and headphone charging across plug standards

Warranty 2 year limited warranty

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Published 30 W total output across three USB-C and two USB-A ports plus an AC outlet
  • Two spare 10 A fuses in the box, which tells you what fails
  • 5.1 oz published, small enough to live in a personal item permanently

What you give up

  • An adapter, not a converter — it changes the plug shape, never the voltage
  • 30 W shared across six ports is a trickle if you fill them
  • 2 year warranty is short for something carrying mains voltage
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow

3.3

Skip this one. Skip the travel pillow unless you know which way their head falls. It is the single most-gifted travel item and the most likely to go unused, because a pillow that does not match the recipient's failure mode is worse than none - a forward-dropper needs overlapping arms, a sideways-dropper needs a lateral brace. If you cannot answer that question about them, buy something else on this page.

A flattened rear cushion so your head sits against the seat rather than being pushed off it — the one design decision that separates travel pillows that work from ones that do not.

Warranty 1 year warranty as published at retail; Cabeau's own site states a lifetime warranty. The shorter published figure is used here.

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Flattened back panel removes the forward head push that ruins most neck pillows
  • 11.6 oz published, and it compresses into its own case
  • Seat strap stops it migrating when you actually fall asleep

What you give up

  • Two different warranty terms are published for the same product, which is not reassuring
  • $40 per covered year on the shorter of those two terms
  • Memory foam is warm, which is the wrong property in a full cabin
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 0.0/10 — $39.99 ÷ 1 yr = $39.99/yr

What it does well

  • 3 year published warranty, the longest in this category
  • 79 g published for passport, cards, cash and a pen in one object
  • Published RFID protection on the card slots

What you give up

  • Bellroy publishes that it does not fit Irish or pre-2017 German passports
  • One passport only, so it is the wrong object for a family
  • No manufacturer-published US price
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

Common questions

What is the best gift for someone who travels a lot?
A luggage scale, counterintuitively. It costs very little, almost nobody buys one for themselves, and it prevents a charge that starts at $100 on Delta for a 51-70 lb checked bag. The Etekcity EL11 publishes 0.3 lb and a 2-year limited warranty, which is unusual at that price.
Is a travel pillow a good gift?
Only if you know how the recipient sleeps. The right pillow depends on which way their head falls — forward needs overlapping arms, sideways needs a lateral brace, backward needs a flattened rear panel. A mismatched pillow is the most commonly unused travel gift there is.
Is an AirTag a good gift for a traveler?
For someone who checks a bag on every trip, yes — but check two things first. Many frequent flyers already own a set, and an AirTag only works properly in an Apple household. For an Android user the Chipolo ONE Point is the right equivalent.
What travel gifts are under $25?
A luggage scale, a set of reusable earplugs and a universal travel adapter all sit there. Travel gear is one of the few categories where the cheapest items are the most used — the scale in particular lives in the suitcase and gets used twice a trip.
Can you take wrapped gifts on a plane?
You can, but TSA advises against it: it encourages gift bags that officers can open easily, and boxes with removable lids, so a fully wrapped present does not have to be opened. Snow globes should go in checked bags because of the liquid inside them.
