Compression Socks for Flying
Two grades, one number, and a piece of health guidance most product pages leave out. The CDC's advice is to ask a doctor if you have risk factors - not to buy a sock.

The number on the box is mmHg — millimeters of mercury, the pressure at the ankle. 15–20 mmHg is the over-the-counter travel grade; 20–30 mmHg is firm compression, the grade clinicians prescribe. Both are graduated: tightest at the ankle, easing up the calf, which is what moves blood upward.

What the CDC actually publishes
Worth quoting before any product talk, because it is more measured than most marketing around this category. The CDC’s travelers’ health guidance says to “talk to your doctor about wearing compression stockings or taking medicine before departure if you have additional risk factors for blood clots.”
Two things follow. First, compression stockings are framed as a conditional measure for people with risk factors, not a universal precaution for everyone on a plane. Second, the decision is explicitly pointed at a doctor rather than at a purchase.
The CDC also advises selecting an aisle seat where possible so you can walk around every two to three hours, and states plainly that taking aspirin to prevent blood clots when traveling is not recommended. Risk factors it lists include obesity, cancer treatment, recent surgery, pregnancy and age.
What mmHg means, and why graduated matters
Compression is measured in millimeters of mercury, the same unit as blood pressure, and the figure quoted is the pressure at the ankle — the tightest point.
A graduated sock is tighter at the ankle and progressively looser up the calf. That gradient is the entire mechanism: it encourages blood to move upward toward the heart rather than pooling in the lower leg while you sit still. A sock with uniform pressure is not doing the same job, whatever number is on it.

The honest summary: these are the same product in two pressure grades, and the grade is the decision. 15–20 mmHg is what most travelers without a diagnosed condition are looking for. 20–30 is firm, and choosing it because a bigger number sounds more effective is the wrong reason.
Fit matters as much as grade
A compression sock that does not fit does not deliver its stated pressure profile, which makes the number on the box meaningless. Two rules:
- Size by calf circumference and shoe size, both, using the manufacturer’s chart. Sizing by shoe size alone is the commonest error and calf circumference is what determines the pressure actually applied.
- Measure in the morning, before your legs have swollen from a day of standing. That is the baseline the charts are built around.
If the top band digs in and leaves a deep mark, the sock is too small — and a band that constricts at the top is working directly against the gradient the sock exists to create.
How to wear them on a flight
- Put them on before you leave for the airport, not on the plane. Getting a firm sock on in an economy seat is a genuinely miserable exercise.
- Smooth out every wrinkle. A fold creates a pressure ridge, which is the opposite of a smooth gradient.
- Keep them on for the whole journey, including connections and the drive at the other end. The sitting still is the issue, not the flying.
- Still walk around. The CDC advises moving every two to three hours and picking an aisle seat to make it easy. Socks do not replace that.
- Take them off overnight at the destination unless a doctor has said otherwise.
Who should think hardest about this
Not everyone on a long flight. The CDC frames compression stockings as a step for travelers with additional risk factors, and lists obesity, cancer treatment, recent surgery, pregnancy and age among them.
If none of those apply and you are taking a six-hour flight, a pair of 15–20 mmHg socks is a low-cost comfort purchase and swollen ankles are the problem you are actually solving. If any of them do apply, the sock is not the decision — the conversation with a doctor is, and it should happen before the flight rather than at the gate.

- Most travelers, most flights → the 15–20 mmHg grade. Over the counter, manageable to get on, and the standard travel recommendation.
- You have been advised to wear firm compression → 20–30 mmHg, sized carefully from a chart.
- You have risk factors and no advice yet → talk to a doctor first. That is the CDC’s own recommendation and it is better than anything a product page can offer you.
- Whatever you buy → walk every two to three hours anyway. The socks are an addition to moving, not a substitute for it.

Skip this one. Skip the 20-30 mmHg grade unless someone has told you to wear it. Firm compression is the grade clinicians prescribe for diagnosed venous conditions, it is noticeably harder to get on, and buying up a grade because more sounds better is the wrong reason. 20-30 mmHg is the firmer of the two grades sold for flying, and the grade most often recommended for long-haul rather than everyday wear.
