What 45 liters actually is

Start with the box, because the box is the rule. Seven of the eleven US carriers we track publish the same carry-on maximum: 22 × 14 × 9 in. That is 2,772 in³, and at 1 in³ = 0.0163871 L it works out to 45.4 L.

So 45 L is not a capacity that sits comfortably inside the carry-on limit. It is the carry-on limit, expressed in liters, with nothing left over for the fabric, the harness, the padding or the zips. A bag advertised at 45 L is telling you it holds as much as the largest box an airline will accept — which is a claim about how the maker measures capacity, not a promise that the bag fits.

This is the same arithmetic that makes 40 L the one-bag standard: a soft pack gives up roughly a tenth of its box to structure, and 40 liters is what is left. Everything above that number is a bag betting that you will not be measured.

Published capacity and published size are different numbers

The Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 makes the point better than any argument. Osprey publishes it at 45 L of capacity and at 21 × 14 × 9 in of exterior size. Multiply those dimensions out and the box is 2,646 in³, or 43.4 L — 1.6 L less than the capacity printed beside it.

Neither figure is dishonest. They are measured differently: exterior dimensions are taken across the bag as it sits, and capacity is taken from what the bag swallows when it is packed and a soft shell has stretched. But only one of them is the number a gate agent checks, and it is not the one on the marketing page.

Read the last two rows against the first two. The Fairview 40 has a larger published box than either 45 L bag and clears every carrier, because it is exactly the box rather than over it on one side. Capacity did not decide any of this. Depth did.

Three formats, three different bets

The three 45 L bags in this ledger are not three versions of the same product. They are three different answers to the question of how you carry the thing.

• The convertible duffel. The Daylite Duffel 45 publishes 1.4 lb empty and converts to a backpack. • The wheeled pack. The Osprey Sojourn Wheeled 45 carries both a chassis and a stowaway harness. Osprey publishes the capacity and the guarantee; it does not publish the exterior dimensions, the weight or a price we could read, which on this page is disqualifying rather than merely annoying. Where a 45L bag actually flies

Four of the eleven US carriers we track publish a carry-on box bigger than the standard one. Those four are the entire reason a 45 L bag is worth considering at all, and they are why the Peak Design scores 4 of 11 rather than zero.

If you fly the four larger-box carriers and nothing else, a 45 L pack is a reasonable buy and the depth argument never touches you. If your flying includes American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Hawaiian or Breeze — which for most US travelers it does — you are carrying a bag that is over the published limit on the one dimension sizers are tightest on. The international 45 liter myth

“45 L is the international carry-on standard” is repeated everywhere and is not a rule published by any carrier we track. The published international limits are simply different from each other, and two of the three are far more generous on volume than the US standard while being far stricter on weight.

Ryanair is the instructive row. Its published box is 44.1 L — smaller than the US standard — and its published weight cap is 22 lb for the whole bag including the bag itself. Packs for international travel goes through the European limits properly.

Weight is the second limit, and 45 liters runs into it first

Volume gets the attention; weight quietly decides more cases. Five of the carriers we track publish a cabin-bag weight cap, and the cap counts the empty bag against you.

• At Ryanair’s published 22 lb, the Daylite Duffel’s 1.4 lb leaves you 20.6 lb of contents. The Peak Design’s 4.52 lb leaves 17.5 lb — a fifth of the allowance spent before anything goes in.
• At Hawaiian’s published 25 lb, those same two bags leave 23.6 lb and 20.5 lb.
• At the 35 lb published by Frontier, Breeze and Sun Country, neither bag’s empty weight is likely to be what stops you.

This is the part that makes 45 L self-defeating on a weight-capped carrier: the extra five liters over a 40 L pack is space you are only allowed to fill with about four pounds of anything.

What to buy

• Best 45 L overall → Osprey Daylite Duffel 45. It is the only 45 L bag here inside the standard box on all three published dimensions, the lightest at 1.4 lb, and the cheapest per covered year on the site. The trade is honest: no internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees, and 14 in of published width leaves no margin when it is full.
