The Best Carry-On Backpack for International Travel

The boxes, converted

European carriers publish in centimeters, which is the first reason this catches people — a bag bought against 22 × 14 × 9 in has never been measured against 56 × 45 × 25 cm, and the two are not the same shape.

Two things jump out. The European overhead box is wider and deeper than the US one — 17.7 in of width against 14, and 9.8 in of depth against 9. And the free bag is far tighter, with a 20 cm depth limit that has no US equivalent.

Nothing we track fits the free bag

We ran every pack in our ledger against those published boxes. The result is worth stating plainly because no roundup in this category says it.

The pattern is entirely about depth. Every travel pack we track publishes 8 in or more, and the free European bag caps depth at 7.9 in. Even the Narwey — a soft, foldable personal-item bag built to the US 18 × 14 × 8 in standard — misses easyJet’s free bag by three tenths of an inch on length and one tenth on depth.

That is not a criticism of the packs. It is what happens when a market designs to a US personal-item box and a European carrier publishes a different one. The full international size table.

The one honest caveat: soft bags compress

Our tables compare published numbers, and a published number for a soft, unstructured bag is measured unpacked. A half-full foldable bag genuinely does squeeze into a sizer that its spec sheet says it should not.

We are not going to tell you it will, because we have not tested it and because the gate agent decides, not us. What we can say is the shape of the risk: a structured pack that publishes 9.1 in of depth will not compress into 7.9 in, while a soft bag one tenth of an inch over might. Buy accordingly, and do not plan a trip around a bag needing to be squashed.

What to buy for an international trip

• Osprey Farpoint 40 — the pick. Published 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 in and 3.27 lb, it clears the BA and easyJet overhead box on all three sides with room, and it is the lightest 40 L pack here. Osprey publishes an All Mighty Guarantee with a repair route and cover for airline handling damage — the only warranty posture in this comparison that covers the thing most likely to break a bag. Its con: the harness suits a longer torso, and it fails Ryanair Basic like everything else.
• Osprey Fairview 40 — same pack, different harness. Published 22 × 14 × 9 in and 3.44 lb, with a women’s-specific fit. Its con: 0.17 lb heavier and $15 dearer at list for the same capacity and guarantee. The two head to head.
• Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L — for split itineraries. It publishes an expandable range, roughly 35 L compressed and 45 L expanded, which is genuinely useful when the outbound and the return have different published limits. Its con: 4.52 lb empty — 20.5% of Ryanair’s published 10 kg cap spent on the bag — and $300 at list, the dearest pack on this site.
• Osprey Daylite Plus 20L — the second bag. 1.31 lb, $80, and it clears the European overhead box easily. On a BA ticket it works as the free handbag only if you keep it small; on easyJet it is over the free bag on two dimensions. Its con: 20 L is a daypack, not a trip.
• Cotopaxi Allpa 35L — the near miss. 2.93 lb and a clamshell opening, but 10 in of published depth against a 9.8 in European box. Its con: that two tenths of an inch, plus a warranty Cotopaxi publishes with no stated term.

Buy the fare before you buy the bag

The most expensive mistake in this category is not the bag — it is booking a Basic fare and discovering the bag you own was never eligible.

• Ryanair Basic includes the under-seat bag only. The 55 × 40 × 20 cm overhead bag requires paid Priority. If you own a 40 L pack, you are buying Priority every flight — price that in. Ryanair’s rules in full.
• easyJet includes a free under-seat bag at 45 × 36 × 20 cm, which is more generous than Ryanair’s and still tighter than anything we track. easyJet’s rules.
• British Airways includes both — a 56 × 45 × 25 cm cabin bag up to 23 kg plus a handbag — which makes it the most forgiving of the three for a one-bag traveler. BA’s rules.

The weight caps are real, unlike in the US

Most US carriers publish no cabin weight limit at all. Every international carrier in our table does — 10 kg at Ryanair, 15 kg at easyJet, 23 kg at BA — and they are weighed at the gate far more often than a US bag ever is.

Against Ryanair’s 10 kg, an empty Farpoint 40 is 14.8% of your allowance and an empty Peak Design 45 is 20.5%. That is a fifth of everything you may carry, spent on the bag, before a single garment. The published caps.
