Depth is the dimension that fails. Every 40 L pack here clears the 22 in height standard; four of five are within an inch on width. On depth, published figures run from 8 in to 10 in against a 9 in standard, and a soft bag packed full is deeper than its spec sheet says.

Why depth is the only dimension worth arguing about
A soft-sided bag does not have fixed dimensions. It has a published figure and a loaded figure, and the two differ most in depth, because that is the direction a pack expands when you fill it. Height is constrained by the frame and width by the panel; depth is constrained by nothing except how much you put in.
Which means a pack published at 9.1 in deep is a pack that will measure ten inches loaded, and a pack published at 8 in has an inch of honest margin. That is the entire practical difference between passing and failing a sizer.

Weight per liter: the figure that separates them
Raw weight is misleading across different capacities. What matters is how much bag you carry per liter of usable space — the same logic that governs weight in a wheeled case, except here you are carrying it on your spine rather than rolling it.

The spread is 0.082 to 0.110 — about a third. In absolute terms, the Farpoint carries 1.13 lb less bag than the Tortuga for the same 40 L. That is the trade the Tortuga asks for its inch of depth margin, and it is a real one.
Two of these publish no warranty term
Osprey publishes the All Mighty Guarantee — repair or replace, any reason, any product, any era, including damage caused by an airline. Peak Design publishes a lifetime product warranty. Those are the only two firm commitments on this page.
Cotopaxi’s Guaranteed for Good policy and Tortuga’s Worldwide Warranty both promise a remedy and state no duration. That is not the same as no warranty, and it is not the same as a lifetime one either — it means cost per covered year cannot be computed, so the Value axis is dropped and their scores are calculated from the axes that remain. Why we do it that way.
Fit beats every number on this page
The Farpoint’s harness is built for a longer torso; the Fairview’s is built for a shorter one with narrower shoulders. Those are the two shapes Osprey sells, and the labels on them are a marketing convention rather than a prescription.
If you are under about five foot eight, try the Fairview before you assume the Farpoint. A pack that transfers load to your hips carries lighter than a heavier pack that does not, and no spec sheet captures that. Measure your torso first — it takes five minutes.
