After that: Apple publishes IP67 and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for Precision Finding; Chipolo publishes up to 120 dB, which is how you find a bag by ear in a room rather than by map.

The network is the product, not the tag

Both of these are a coin cell, a Bluetooth radio and a speaker in a plastic disc. Neither of them knows where it is. What actually finds your bag is every stranger’s phone in the terminal quietly reporting the tag’s presence to a network you can query.

That is why the platform question is not a preference. An AirTag in an Android household is an inert disc, and a Chipolo ONE Point cannot be paired from an iPhone at all. Buy the one that matches the phone you will be holding at baggage claim. The full tracker comparison.

Network density is the one thing neither maker publishes and we will not estimate: how many participating phones are near your bag at any moment depends entirely on where it is, and nobody publishes a map of that.

Two different ideas of “find”

Apple’s answer is precision: a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip that drives on-screen direction and distance when you are close. Chipolo’s answer is volume: a published alarm of up to 120 dB, which is the loudest figure any tracker in this ledger publishes.

Both matter, in different rooms. Ultra Wideband is what gets you across an apartment to a bag under a bed. 120 dB is what gets a lost-luggage clerk to find your bag in a warehouse you are not allowed to enter — and it is the one thing a quiet tracker cannot do at any range.

Apple does not publish a decibel figure for the AirTag’s speaker in the specification we compiled, so we cannot give you a head-to-head number. What we can say is that Chipolo publishes one and Apple does not.

IP67 against IPX5 is a real gap

Apple publishes IP67 — dust-tight and rated to immersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes. Chipolo publishes IPX5: protected against a water jet, with no dust rating and no immersion rating at all.

For a tracker on a keyring that is academic. For a tracker inside a checked bag that sits on an open belt in weather, and occasionally in a puddle, it is the one specification on this page where the two products differ on capability rather than on ecosystem. One good thing they share

Both publish a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. That sounds minor and is not: the tracker category is full of sealed products that become landfill when the battery dies, and both of these are a thirty-second swap with a supermarket battery.

A dead tracker is worse than no tracker, because you think your bag is findable and it is not. Change the cell before a long trip, not after the bag goes missing.

What neither tracker does

  • They do not get your bag back. They tell you where it was last seen. Recovering it is still the airline’s process, and a screenshot of a map is evidence rather than leverage. The claim process, step by step.
  • They do not prevent theft. A tracker is a locator, not a lock. What a lock does and does not do.
  • They are not allowed to be lost and forgotten. Both platforms run unwanted-tracking alerts, which is a feature and a reason to keep your own tags registered and current.

Skip this one. Skip it for a checked bag if you are on iPhone — and read the water rating even if you are not. Chipolo publishes IPX5, which is a splash rating; Apple publishes IP67, rated to a meter of immersion for 30 minutes. A checked bag sits on an open belt in the rain more often than anyone would like, and that is the one place these two genuinely differ on capability rather than on ecosystem. On Android it is still the right answer, because the alternative does not work at all.

Whichever matches your phone. AirTag has no Android pairing path and Chipolo ONE Point requires Android 9 or later. Where they genuinely differ on capability is water rating - Apple publishes IP67, Chipolo IPX5 - and alarm loudness, where Chipolo publishes up to 120 dB.
Does the Chipolo ONE Point work with an iPhone?
No. The ONE Point is the Google Find My Device version and pairing requires Android 9 or later with Google Play Services. Chipolo publishes other models for Apple’s network; this is not one of them.
Which luggage tracker is loudest?
