The Best Noise-Cancelling Earbuds for Flying
Earbuds trade the battery and seal of an over-ear headphone for something that weighs almost nothing and fits a pocket. On a plane, three published figures decide whether that trade works.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
The Soundcore Liberty 4 NC — a published 8 hours per charge and 40 hours with the case in ANC mode, at $99.99. The Sony WF-1000XM5 publishes the same 8 hours with noise cancelling on and a lighter bud at 5.9 g, with no US price published in the specifications we read. Either way, earbuds have no cable — so the seatback screen needs a transmitter.
Manufacturer-published figures read 11 September 2026. Sony’s regional specification pages could not be read directly on that date; its figures are its published specifications as surfaced. We have not tested these earbuds.

Per charge: 8 hours, both of them
| Per charge, ANC on | With the case, ANC on | Per earbud | IP rating | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soundcore Liberty 4 NC | 8 hours | 40 hours | 5.2 g | IPX4 | $99.99 |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | 8 hours | Not stated in the figures we could verify | 5.9 g | IPX4 | Not published |
Eight hours with noise cancelling on covers a transatlantic flight in one go. It does not cover a Pacific one, and the answer there is the case: put the buds back in for a short while mid-flight and they come out with charge.
That makes the case figure the one to look at for a whole trip. Soundcore publishes 40 hours in ANC mode with the case — out and back on a long-haul trip without finding a socket. We could not verify a with-case figure for Sony from the specification text we could reach, so that cell stays empty.
Weight: a rounding error either way
Sony publishes 5.9 g per bud and a case of approximately 39 g; Soundcore publishes 5.2 g per bud and no case weight. Against an over-ear headphone at around a quarter of a kilo, both are close to weightless. The over-ear headphones compared.
The real difference from over-ears is not weight but packing: earbuds live in a pocket, while an over-ear headphone is one of the most awkwardly shaped objects most people carry. The trade is that over-ears publish longer battery and seal around the whole ear.
The seatback screen needs a cable they do not have
Seatback entertainment is a 3.5 mm socket on almost every aircraft, and neither of these has one. A small Bluetooth transmitter plugged into the armrest bridges the gap — Twelve South publishes 25+ hours for the AirFly Pro 2 and pairing for two sets of headphones at once. Airplane Bluetooth adapters.
Without one, earbuds are for your own downloaded content only — which is the better plan anyway, because downloaded films do not depend on the aircraft’s system working.
For sleeping, earplugs still win
Noise cancelling is best at steady low-frequency drone — engines. It is worst at irregular mid-frequency noise — announcements, conversation, a child two rows back. For sleep, a certified passive plug does the second job better and is comfortable to lie on: Loop publishes 24 dB SNR for the Quiet 2 at $24.95. The sleep kit.
The practical kit on a long overnight flight is both: earbuds for the film, plugs for the sleep.
The picks
- Soundcore Liberty 4 NC — the pick. 8 hours per charge and 40 with the case in ANC mode, $99.99, all published. Its con: no published case weight, no warranty term, and 98.5% is a marketing figure rather than a standard rating.
- Sony WF-1000XM5 — the lighter bud. 8 hours per charge, 5.9 g, IPX4, published. Its con: no US price or warranty in the specifications we read.
- AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe — to use them with the seatback. Its con: $69.99 and one more device to charge.
- Loop Quiet 2 — for the sleep half of the flight. Its con: no warranty term published, only a return policy.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

What it does well
- 40 hours with the case in ANC mode, published
- $99.99 published
- 5.2 g per earbud and IPX4, published
What you give up
- Case weight not published, so the carried weight cannot be computed
- 98.5% is a marketing reduction figure, not a standard SNR rating
- No warranty term published
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No published warranty term or capacity to divide the price by.
- Airline-fit breadth not scored — No published dimensions to check against carrier limits.
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 0.0/10 — no published term (0 of 6); no published repair route (+0); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · Travelers who want noise cancelling without the bulk of an over-ear headphone
Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise-Cancelling Earbuds
Skip this one. Skip it on the arithmetic this page can do. Sony publishes the same 8 hours per charge with noise cancelling on as the Soundcore, and the specifications we read published no US price and no warranty term - so there is no way to weigh the difference in cost here. It is the lighter pair as published; the Soundcore is the one that shows its numbers.
8 hours published with noise cancelling on covers a transatlantic flight in one charge - the weight recorded here is the buds plus the case, because that is what you carry.

What it does well
- Published 24 dB SNR certified reduction, on irregular noise as well as engine drone
- Reusable silicone with four ear tip sizes, rather than disposable foam
- Weighs and packs like nothing, which no over-ear headphone does
What you give up
