The Best Tech for a Long Layover
A layover is the one part of a trip where you use devices continuously and have no reliable way to charge them. Everything else follows from that.

A long layover is continuous device use with no reliable power. A phone is roughly 15 Wh and a laptop 50–90 Wh, so a compact 36 Wh bank covers a phone comfortably and a laptop not at all. Size the bank to what you actually intend to use.

Which produces a straightforward rule. Phone and tablet only → the compact 36.3 Wh bank at a published 0.425 lb. Laptop work during the layover → the 24,000 mAh class at roughly 87 Wh and 1.39 lb. The 100 Wh ceiling and what fits under it.
The sockets are always taken
Plan on this rather than hoping. Terminal power outlets are limited, unevenly distributed and occupied — and the ones that are free are frequently free because they do not work.
- Charge everything on the previous flight, where seat power exists more often than terminal sockets are free.
- Charge the bank overnight before you travel, which is the failure people actually experience — a full device kit and a flat bank.
- Look near gates that are not boarding, and along walls away from seating. Charging stations at busy gates are the last place with a free socket.
- A short cable is worth more than a long one when the socket is at floor level and you are sitting on it.
- Bring your own multi-port charger. One socket then charges three things, which matters far more than charging speed.

The earplugs are the underrated item. Terminal noise is announcements and conversation — irregular, mid-frequency, and exactly what active noise cancellation is worst at. A certified 24 dB SNR plug is better at it than a headphone, and it weighs nothing. Why that is true.
The decisions that matter more than the gear
- Do not check a bag on a tight connection. Your bag has to make the same transfer with less time and no ability to run. On a long layover this is less pressing, and it is still the rule. How rules work across a connection.
- Check whether you can leave the terminal. On a long enough layover with the right visa status, the city beats the gate area comprehensively. This is a research question, done at home.
- Know whether you re-clear security. If you do, the water bottle has to be empty again and the liquids bag comes out again. The liquids rules.
- Do not sleep with the bag unattended. A long layover is the one part of a trip where you are stationary, tired and surrounded by strangers. Strap the bag to you or sleep on it. The splitting strategy.
Download before you go, again
Terminal wifi is frequently time-limited, slow, or requires a registration process that fails. The same rule that governs in-flight entertainment governs a layover: content already on the device beats any plan involving a network.
Download twice as much as you expect to need, check it plays offline before you leave home, and treat terminal wifi as a bonus rather than infrastructure.
