A steamer is a heating element, and heating elements are the appliances that die abroad. The single most important line on the box is not the wattage - it is the voltage.

The Conair Power Steam GSC24 — published with a dual voltage switch, 1200 W, a 35-second heat-up and 2.35 lb, at $49.99. The Steamery Cirrus 2 publishes more power and less weight, and its US model is published for 110–120 V only — so it is the better steamer at home and the wrong one abroad.

Voltage first, because it decides everything else
North America runs at about 120 V; most of the world runs at 220–240 V. A plug adapter changes the shape of the plug and nothing else. So a single-voltage heating appliance plugged into a European socket through an adapter receives roughly double its design voltage — and a heating element is exactly the kind of appliance that does not survive it. Adapter against converter.
Phone and laptop chargers are almost all dual voltage and shrug this off. Hair dryers, straighteners and steamers are where it goes wrong. Which is why the first line to read on a travel steamer is not the wattage.

A dual voltage switch has to be set
Conair publishes a dual voltage switch for international use. A switch is a manual step: set it to the destination’s voltage before you plug in, and set it back when you get home. Forgetting in either direction is how dual-voltage appliances still get damaged.
Tape a note to the cord if you travel between voltage zones often. It is a very small habit that protects a $49.99 appliance and a hotel’s circuit breaker.
You still need the plug adapter
Dual voltage handles the electricity; it does nothing for the shape of the plug. A US plug still needs an adapter to fit a European, British or Swiss socket. The four plugs Europe uses.
One caution worth knowing: a compact universal adapter is designed around phone and laptop chargers. A 1200 W heating appliance is a far larger load, so check the adapter’s own published current rating before you plug a steamer into it. The EPICKA TA-105C publishes a 10 A rating.
The better answer: do not crease it in the first place
A steamer fixes a crease. Packing well prevents one, and weighs nothing.
- Hang it. A garment bag publishing 1.5 lb keeps a suit on its hanger for the whole journey. Garment bags.
- Fold it properly. One shoulder inside out and nested into the other, folded once over something soft, packed last. The method.
- Use the bathroom. Hang the garment near a hot shower for twenty minutes. Most travel creases drop out.
- Ask the hotel. Many will lend an iron. Ask before you pack an appliance.

Skip this one. Skip the US model for international travel. On the published figures it is the better steamer - 1500 W and 1.72 lb against the Conair's 1200 W and 2.35 lb - and Steamery publishes it as designed for use at 110-120 V. On a 230 V socket through a plug adapter it meets roughly double that. At home and on domestic trips it is the one we would buy; abroad it is the wrong object.
The better-made steamer on the published numbers - lighter and more powerful - and the US model is published for 110-120 V only, so it stays home when you cross the Atlantic.
