How Much Does Good Luggage Cost?

The honest answer is a range and a second number. Published carry-on prices here span eight times; divided by the coverage behind them, the order changes almost completely.

We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.

Published carry-on prices in our ledger run from $89.99 to $729 — a spread of roughly eight times. Divide each by the coverage its maker publishes and the range narrows to $4.75 to $36.45 per covered year, and the cheapest bag per year is a $95 duffel rather than anything with wheels.

The four price tiers, and what each one buys

Published manufacturer prices from our ledger. The tiers are descriptive of what the published specifications change, not a recommendation.
TierPublished priceWhat you actually getExample
Budget$90 – $130A 10 year warranty term, a hardside shell, and a box usually too wide for the strict limitAmerican Tourister Stratum 2.0, $89.99
Mid$150 – $200A warranty with no stated end date, lower weight, and published repair routesTravelpro Maxlite 5, $160
Upper mid$200 – $400Airline-damage clauses, heavier construction, sometimes a worse fit resultTravelpro Platinum Elite, $390
Premium$400+A repair service rather than a product, and the best published fit on the siteBriggs & Riley Essential, $729

The pattern worth noticing is that the thing improving across tiers is mostly the warranty, not the bag. Weight does not fall as price rises — the most expensive wheeled case we track publishes 7.8 lb while a $160 one publishes 5.4 lb. What money buys reliably is coverage.

The number that reorders the shelf

A price tells you what you pay once. Divide it by the years the maker commits to and you get what the bag costs to own — which is a different ranking, and the one this site uses. The method, including the 20-year horizon for warranties with no stated end date.

Published prices divided by published coverage. The cheapest bag to buy is not the cheapest bag to own.
BagPublished priceWarrantyCost per covered year
Osprey Daylite Duffel 45$95No stated end date$4.75
Travelpro Maxlite 5$160No stated end date$8.00
American Tourister Stratum 2.0$89.9910 years$9.00
Travelpro Platinum Elite$390No stated end date$19.50
Briggs & Riley Essential 22$729No stated end date$36.45

The $89.99 case is the cheapest thing on the list and the third cheapest to own, because its coverage stops at ten years. The $95 duffel costs $4.75 a year — less than half the budget hardside — because its guarantee publishes no end date.

What the extra money does not buy

  • A better fit. The most expensive wheeled case in our ledger publishes 23.5 in of height and clears 3 of 11 US carriers. A $95 duffel clears all eleven.
  • Less weight. Price and weight are barely correlated here. The heaviest carry-on we track publishes 9.3 lb at $189.99; the lightest publishes 1.4 lb at $95.
  • Published capacity. Several cases at every tier publish no capacity figure at all, which is why our tables say “Not published” rather than estimating one.

How much to spend, by how much you fly

  • Two or three trips a year → $90 to $160. A ten-year term outlasts the usage, and the up-front price is what you are really optimizing.
  • Monthly → $150 to $200, and buy the open-ended warranty. At that rate the bag will meet enough baggage handlers to need one.
  • Weekly, gate-checking often → the airline-damage clause is worth its premium. Two models in our ledger publish one.
  • Any of the above, if you can carry it → a soft duffel or pack beats a case on every axis this site measures except rigidity.

Where the cheap wins are

Not in luggage. The best value arithmetic on this whole site is in the small things: a $35 money belt under an open-ended warranty costs $1.75 per covered year, and a $39.95 packing cube costs $2.00. Both are cheaper per year than any bag we track. Everything under $100, ranked on that axis.

And the cheapest purchase that saves money is a $10.99 luggage scale, because one overweight-bag charge at a desk costs more than the scale several times over.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Maximum published volume that still clears a 22 × 14 × 9 in sizer

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
  • 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
  • 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack

What you give up

  • 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
  • No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
  • Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

Warranty Limited 10 year global warranty

Fits 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $89.99 published price against a 10 year warranty works out at $9.00 per covered year
  • 22 in published height clears the 22 in limit exactly at six US carriers
  • ABS shell is the cheapest way to a wipe-clean hard case

What you give up

  • 15 in width fails the 14 in limit at American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue and Hawaiian
  • ABS is the least impact-resistant of the common hardshell plastics
  • No published capacity figure, so cost per liter cannot be computed
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.6/10 — $89.99 ÷ 10 yr = $9.00/yr
  • Airline-fit breadth 3.6/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 4 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, G4, SY
  • Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.

3 · Southwest, Frontier and Sun Country flyers who want a lifetime warranty

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner (21 in)

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 5.4 lb for 46 L is 0.12 lb per liter, the lightest carry-on in this ledger
  • Lifetime limited warranty covering wheels, zippers and handles at a $160 published price
  • Softside give means an overstuffed bag still closes

What you give up

  • Published overall height of 23 in fails the 22 in limit at American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Hawaiian, Allegiant and Breeze
  • No published airline-damage cover
  • Fabric shell scuffs where a hardshell would only mark
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.1/10 — $160 ÷ 20 yr = $8/yr; $160 ÷ 46 L = $3.48/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
  • Carry efficiency 7.3/10 — 5.4 lb ÷ 46 L = 0.117 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

Specs: Travelpro published specifications, compiled 3 September 2026. Travelpro publishes both a 21 × 14 × 9 in case size and a 23 × 14.5 × 9 in overall size. The overall figure is the one a gate sizer measures, so it is the one used here.

4 · Frequent flyers who check a carry-on at the gate often

Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Spinner (21 in)

Warranty Built for a Lifetime limited worry-free warranty

Fits 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Published warranty covers damage caused by an airline when the bag is registered
  • Same 46 L capacity as the Maxlite 5 in a heavier, more heavily built shell
  • Repair rather than replacement is the published first remedy

What you give up

  • $390 published price is the highest here — $19.50 per covered year against the Maxlite 5's $8
  • 7.8 lb before anything goes in it, against a 25 lb cap on Hawaiian
  • 23.5 in overall height fails the 22 in limit at eight of the eleven US carriers we checked
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 3.2/10 — $390 ÷ 20 yr = $19.50/yr; $390 ÷ 46 L = $8.48/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 2.7/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 3 of 11 US carriers: WN, F9, SY
  • Carry efficiency 5.2/10 — 7.8 lb ÷ 46 L = 0.170 lb/L

5 · Buyers treating a carry-on as a repair contract rather than a purchase

Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential Carry-On Expandable Spinner (22 in)

5.8

Skip this one. Not as a price benchmark. At a published $729 it is $36.45 per covered year, the most expensive figure in this ledger, and the guarantee it buys only pays for itself if you actually use it. It is on this page to mark the ceiling, not to be bought off a price table.

The published guarantee is the most generous in this ledger — free repair for life, airline damage included, no receipt — and at $729 against 35.4 L compressed it is also the most expensive capacity on the site by a distance.

Warranty Simple As That lifetime guarantee — free repair of all functional aspects, no proof of purchase

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • Free repair for life of every functional part, with no proof of purchase required
  • Airline damage repaired at no charge if you do not claim against the carrier instead
  • Published 22 × 14 × 9 in compressed, which is inside the limit at all 11 US carriers we track

What you give up

  • $729 published is $36.45 per covered year — the most expensive figure in this ledger
  • No published weight anywhere on the maker's own product page, at this price
  • 35.4 L compressed is less capacity than carry-ons at a fifth of the price; the 46.4 L expanded state is 11.5 in deep and over every limit here
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 0.5/10 — $729 ÷ 20 yr = $36.45/yr; $729 ÷ 35.4 L = $20.59/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

Specs: Briggs & Riley published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Briggs & Riley publishes 14 × 22 × 9 in compressed and 11.5 in deep expanded. The compressed figure is the one carried here, because it is the state the bag is in when it meets a sizer — expanded, its published depth is over every limit we track. Published capacity is a range: 35.4 L compressed and 46.4 L expanded. The compressed figure is used here for the same reason as the depth. Common questions

How much should I spend on a carry-on?
$90 to $160 covers most travelers on published prices. Above that you are mostly buying warranty coverage rather than a better bag - weight and airline fit do not reliably improve with price in our ledger.
Is expensive luggage cheaper in the long run?
Sometimes, and the arithmetic is checkable. A $160 case under a warranty with no stated end date costs $8.00 per covered year; a $89.99 case with a ten-year term costs $9.00. But a $729 case costs $36.45 a year, so the relationship stops holding at the top of the market.
What is the cheapest bag that fits every airline?
Of the bags we compile, the Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 at a published $95. It publishes 21 x 14 x 9 inches, inside the standard box on all three sides, and clears the published limits of all 11 US carriers in our table.
Why is luggage so expensive?
At the top of the market you are buying a repair service, not materials. The premium case in our ledger publishes free repair for life with no receipt required. Whether that is worth $36.45 a year depends entirely on how often your bag meets a baggage handler.
