Is Expensive Luggage Worth It?
Divide the price by the years the maker will stand behind the bag, and the ranking inverts. The cheapest bag is not the cheapest to own, and the most expensive buys one specific thing.

Usually not — but cheap is not the answer either. On cost per covered warranty year the $160 Travelpro Maxlite 5 is the cheapest bag to own at $8.00 a year, below the $89.99 Stratum 2.0 at $9.00 and far below the $390 Platinum Elite at $19.50. What the top price buys, on published figures, is airline-damage cover — not more years, and not less weight.

The only honest way to compare price
No manufacturer publishes how long a suitcase will last. What they publish is how long they will stand behind it — the warranty term. So the fairest single number for value is the price divided by the covered years. Why warranty is the proxy for lifespan.
For warranties with no stated end date, this site uses a published 20-year horizon — a convention, applied identically to every open-ended warranty, and stated so you can rerun the arithmetic with a different assumption. The method.

Finding one: the cheapest bag is not the cheapest to own
The $89.99 Stratum 2.0 is the lowest price here and a genuinely good figure at $9.00 a year. The $160 Maxlite 5 costs $70 more and comes out cheaper per year at $8.00, because Travelpro publishes a warranty with no end date where American Tourister publishes ten years.
It is also the lightest bag here, by 1.1 lb over the next lightest. On the published figures, the middle of the price range is where value peaks.
Finding two: the premium does not buy years or lightness
The $390 Platinum Elite publishes the same open-ended warranty as the $160 Maxlite 5 — so it buys no more covered years. It is 2.4 lb heavier, so it does not buy lightness. It publishes the same 46 L.
What it does publish is airline-damage cover — the only bag of the five that does. That is the whole case for the top of the market on this evidence: not that it lasts longer, but that the maker pays when an airline breaks it. The two Travelpros head to head.
Finding three: no price buys a bag that fits the strict box
Every bag in this table is over the 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on box six US carriers publish — the cheapest and the most expensive alike. Spending more does not solve the problem most people buy a new carry-on to solve. The carrier boxes.
When expensive luggage is worth it
- Your carry-on is often gate-checked or checked. Then airline-damage cover is the most valuable clause in any warranty.
- You travel weekly. Heavy use concentrates wear on wheels and handles, and a warranty with a repair route earns its keep faster.
- Not because it will last longer. On published terms, a $160 bag is covered for as long as a $390 one.
