Why cost per covered year is the right lens

A price tag tells you what you pay once. It does not tell you what the thing costs you, because a $35 item you replace annually is worse value than a $95 item under a warranty with no stated end date.

This site divides the published price by the published warranty term — using a stated 20 year horizon for warranties with no end date — and the result reorders the shelf completely. The method is published in full, including what happens when a maker publishes no term at all.

What each one is for

Eagle Creek Undercover Money Belt — a published $35, 0.1875 lb. A flat RFID-blocking belt for the documents you cannot replace abroad. It is the best value figure in our entire ledger at $1.75 per covered year, because Eagle Creek publishes an open-ended warranty on a cheap item — a combination almost nobody else offers. Peak Design Packing Cube (Medium) — a published $39.95, 18 L, 0.32 lb. Expensive for a cube and the cheapest thing here per year of cover, at $2.00. At 0.02 lb per liter it is also the lightest cube per liter we track. The cubes ranked against each other has the alternatives.

Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 — a published $95, 1.4 lb, 45 L. The best-scoring bag on this site at 9.8, and the only bag on it that costs under $100 while clearing the published carry-on limits of all 11 US carriers we track. It converts to a backpack.

Etekcity EL11 Luggage Scale — a published $10.99, 0.3 lb. The cheapest way to stop guessing on any carrier that publishes a weight cap. Hawaiian publishes 25 lb and Ryanair 22 lb; being wrong about either costs more than the scale. The scales compared.

Twelve South AirFly Pro 2 Deluxe — a published $69.99, 0.036 lb. Connects wireless earbuds to a seatback screen, with a published 25+ hours of playtime and two headphones at once. The Deluxe box adds the airline adapter that makes it work on older two-prong jacks. Its $34.99 per covered year is the worst figure on this page — a two-year term on a $70 item — which is worth knowing before you buy it.

Anker Nano 70W 3-Port — a published $39.99, 0.264 lb. Three ports and 70 W in something the size of a matchbox, which replaces three chargers. Anker publishes no warranty term on the product page, so it cannot be scored on value.

The pattern worth noticing

Three of the six items here publish a warranty with no stated end date, and all three are the cheapest per year. The two items with a published two-year term are the most expensive per year, despite one of them costing $10.99.

That is the whole argument for reading warranty terms on cheap gear. A $35 belt covered indefinitely is better value than a $70 gadget covered for two years, and the price tags say the opposite.

What we left out, and why

• Anything without a published price. Several strong items in our ledger publish no price on the maker’s own page, so we cannot place them in a price-capped list honestly.
• Travel pillows. The ones we track publish one-year terms at $39.99 and up, which is poor value arithmetic on this axis, and the pillow question is genuinely about shape rather than price.
• Bags over $100. This is a price-capped page, so the two travel packs that beat the duffel on other axes are not eligible. The starter kit takes the other approach and buys the bag first.

What each price band buys

Under $100 is a wide range, and the shelf behaves differently at each end of it.

• Under $25. Consumables and single-purpose tools: a $10.99 scale, a $15 flat toiletry bottle at 0.026 lb, a $16.99 bottle under a lifetime guarantee. This band contains the highest hit rate on the site because the items are simple enough to be made properly at the price. The under-$25 shelf ranks it on its own.
• $25 to $50. Where organization lives — cubes, pouches, money belts, compact chargers. Warranty terms diverge sharply here: two items in this band publish open-ended cover and two publish none at all.
• $50 to $100. One real bag, or one piece of electronics. The Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 at $95 is the only bag in the band that clears every published US carrier limit we track.

The pattern across all three: the simplest items have the best value arithmetic, and anything with a battery in it has the worst.

If you are buying in order

Scale first, at $10.99, because it prevents a fee. Then the cube, because it makes a soft bag hold its shape. Then the money belt if you are going somewhere you would rather not carry a wallet. The duffel is the only item here that is a real purchase, and it is also the only one that replaces a suitcase.

All of it together is under $200 published, which is less than one mid-range carry-on case — and on our arithmetic, better value than any of them.
