What the guarantee actually says

Briggs & Riley publishes the Simple As That guarantee: free repair of all functional aspects of the bag for life, including damage caused by an airline, with no proof of purchase required. Read those three clauses separately, because each one is doing work.

• All functional aspects — not “defects in materials and workmanship”, which is what most makers publish and which excludes the damage you actually cause. Wheels, zips and handles are what fail on a carry-on, and they are what this covers.
• Airline damage included — the single most expensive thing that happens to luggage. Only two carry-ons in our ledger publish this, and the other one asks you to register the bag first.
• No proof of purchase — the clause that makes the other two usable fifteen years later, when the receipt is long gone. It also means the guarantee survives being given away or bought secondhand.

Nothing else on this site publishes all three. Every open-ended warranty we track, costed shows how unusual that combination is.

It is one of the few that actually fits

Briggs & Riley publishes 22 × 14 × 9 in compressed — the standard US carry-on box exactly. That clears the published limit at all 11 US carriers we track, which almost nothing else in this category does.

Both Travelpro cases here publish overall heights of 23 and 23.5 in and fail the 22 in limit at eight carriers. The American Tourister publishes 15 in of width against a 14 in limit. The short list of bags that clear the box is short for a reason.

The three figures that argue against it

It holds the least

A published 35.4 L compressed is the smallest carry-on capacity in our ledger. Both Travelpro cases publish 46 L — nearly eleven liters more, one of them for $160. You are paying the most and carrying the least.

The weight is not published

This is the odd one. The most expensive bag on the site is the one whose maker does not publish an empty weight, so we cannot compute weight per liter for it or place it in our lightweight table. We do not estimate missing figures, so the axis simply drops — but on a $729 purchase, a buyer is entitled to the number.

$36.45 a year is the highest here

Spread over the published 20-year horizon we apply to open-ended warranties, $729 is $36.45 per covered year against $9.00 for the American Tourister. The lifetime guarantee does not make the bag cheap; it makes the bag repairable. What luggage costs per year across the range.

The verdict

Buy it if

You fly often enough that wheels and handles genuinely wear out, you plan to own one bag for twenty years rather than four bags for five, and you want a repair promise that does not depend on a receipt. On those terms the arithmetic works and nothing else published matches it.

Skip it if

You fly a few times a year. A $160 case with a lifetime limited warranty covers the failures you are realistically going to have, and the $569 difference buys a lot of travel. The general version of this question looks at the whole price ladder.

The middle option

The Travelpro Platinum Elite at $390 publishes airline-damage cover too, on condition that you register the bag, plus 46 L and a published 7.8 lb. It fails the 22 in height limit at eight carriers, which is the price of that capacity. The two brands compared directly.
