Almost every US carrier publishes 62 linear inches — height plus width plus depth — as the checked limit. Of the large bags in our ledger, the two wheeled duffels total 59 and 54.5 in and clear it comfortably; the big hardside cases total 64.25 to 65.5 in and do not. One case lands exactly on 62.

The rule, and why it catches people out
A checked bag is not measured against a three-dimension box the way a carry-on is. The three dimensions are added together into a single number, and almost every US carrier publishes the cap at 62 in. How linear inches are measured is the reference.
That arithmetic is unforgiving in a way a box is not. A case can look ordinary on a shelf and still total 65 in, because depth — the dimension nobody checks — is where large hardsides grow. And unlike a soft bag, a shell cannot be compressed at the margins to get under.

Three of the five large cases we track are over the limit as published, and a fourth sits exactly on it with no margin at all. The two bags that clear comfortably are both soft wheeled duffels.
Why the duffels win this one
A wheeled duffel is built long and relatively narrow, and its depth is fabric rather than molded shell. The Eagle Creek publishes 30 × 14 × 15 in for 108 L of capacity — more volume than any hardside here, inside the limit, at a published 4.25 lb.
That weight figure matters as much as the size one. Checked bags are usually capped at 50 lb including the bag, so a 4.25 lb duffel leaves 45.75 lb for your things while an 11.02 lb hardside leaves 38.98 lb. That is seven pounds of packing decided before you start. The two wheeled duffels head to head.

Measure the bag you already own
Two minutes with a tape settles it. Measure height, width and depth at the widest points — wheels, handles and feet included, because that is how a check-in desk measures — and add the three numbers.
- Under 62 in — fine on almost every US carrier.
- 62 to 65 in — the gray zone. Frequently accepted, occasionally charged as oversize, and entirely at the desk agent’s discretion.
- Over 65 in — expect an oversize fee on a strict carrier. What those charges look like.
And do not trust the model name. A case sold as “28 inch” publishes 30.5 in of overall height in two cases in our ledger, because the number on the label is the body of the case without the wheels or the handle housing.
