The Best Hardside Checked Luggage
Large hard cases are sold on shell and color. The published figure that decides them is the one on the tape measure: height plus width plus depth, against 62 inches.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
The American Tourister Moonlight 28 — a published 30 × 19.5 × 12.5 in, which is exactly 62 linear inches, the only large hard case here inside the checked rule as published. It is also the cheapest at $151.99 and $15.20 per covered year. The cost is weight: 11.02 lb empty, the heaviest here.
Manufacturer-published figures; linear inches and cost per covered year are our arithmetic. Samsonite and American Tourister store pages redirected when fetched directly on 11 September 2026, so their figures are published product information as surfaced. We have not tested these cases.

The rule is height plus width plus depth
Almost every US carrier publishes the same checked-bag limit: 62 linear inches, meaning the three outside dimensions added together, wheels and handles included. It is not a per-side limit, which is why a case can look normal and still be over. The rule in full.
| Case | Published size | Linear inches | 62 in rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Tourister Moonlight 28 | 30 × 19.5 × 12.5 in | 62.00 | Inside, exactly |
| Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX 28 | 30.5 × 20.5 × 13.25 in | 64.25 | Over by 2.25 in |
| Samsonite Omni PC 28 | 30.5 × 21.5 × 13.5 in | 65.50 | Over by 3.5 in |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 29 (softside) | 31 × 21 × 13 in | 65.00 | Over by 3 in |
One hard case of three clears the rule, and it does so by exactly zero inches. A case that is over the published limit falls under the carrier’s oversize rules, whatever it cost. That makes the tape measure, not the shell, the first specification to check.
Cost per covered year
| Case | Published price | Warranty | Cost per covered year | Published weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American Tourister Moonlight 28 | $151.99 | 10 years | $15.20 | 11.02 lb |
| Samsonite Omni PC 28 | $194.99 | 10 years | $19.50 | Not published |
| Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX 28 | $259.99 | 10 years | $26.00 | 10.96 lb |
All three publish a 10 year term, so price does all the separating. The Moonlight costs $10.80 less per covered year than the Winfield — and passes the rule the Winfield fails.
None of them covers what actually breaks a checked bag
A checked case is mostly damaged by baggage handling, and none of the three hard cases publishes cover for airline handling damage. Their warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship.
The softside Travelpro in the comparison is the contrast: Travelpro publishes a Trusted Companion Promise that it describes as covering airline-caused damage for the first year, on top of its lifetime warranty. That is a rare clause, and it is the one worth reading for on a bag you hand over. Brands ranked on warranty posture.
Weight against a kilogram allowance
The Moonlight publishes 11.02 lb — about 5.0 kg, or 21.7% of the 23 kg checked allowance British Airways publishes, gone before you pack. The softside Travelpro publishes 8 lb. On an international ticket, where weight rather than size binds, that difference matters more than the shell. Why weight binds internationally.
What the shell buys you
- Polycarbonate — both Samsonites publish it — flexes under impact and returns. It is the shell to want if you are paying for a shell at all.
- The Moonlight publishes only “hardside” for its shell, so its material cannot be compared here.
- Wheels and handles fail first, whatever the shell. None of these publishes a repair route. Hardside against softside.
The picks
- American Tourister Moonlight 28 — the pick. The only hard case inside the 62 in rule as published, and the lowest cost per covered year. Its con: 11.02 lb, single spinner wheels, and an unstated shell material.
- Samsonite Omni PC 28 — polycarbonate on value. $19.50 per covered year. Its con: 65.5 linear inches, over the rule, and no published weight read from a Samsonite page.
- Travelpro Maxlite 5 29 — if hardside is not a requirement. 8 lb and first-year airline-damage cover published. Its con: 65 linear inches, over the rule, and no published price on the page compiled.

- A lower published price than the Winfield 3 DLX

- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers

Specs: Samsonite published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Samsonite's store showed $155.99 to $194.99 across colorways on 11 September 2026. The higher figure is used so the value arithmetic is not flattered. No weight was read from a manufacturer page.
3 · Checked bags carrying anything that would not survive being stacked
Samsonite Winfield 3 DLX Large Spinner (28 in)
Skip this one. Skip it on the arithmetic. It publishes $259.99 over 10 years - $26.00 per covered year, the highest of the three hard cases - and 64.25 linear inches, over the 62 in checked rule. It is a well-made polycarbonate case; nothing about the published figures justifies paying $108 more than the Moonlight for a case that fails the rule the Moonlight passes.
Polycarbonate protection for checked handling, at a published 10.96 lb — nearly 11 lb of your 50 lb allowance spent before you pack anything.

What it does well
- 100% polycarbonate flexes under the impacts a checked bag actually receives
- $25.99 per covered year on a published 10 year warranty
- 64.25 published linear inches is closer to the 62 in cap than most 28 in cases
What you give up
- 10.96 lb empty is 22% of a 50 lb checked allowance
- Still over the 62 linear inch cap most US carriers publish
- The published warranty covers defects, not airline handling damage
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 3.9/10 — $259.99 ÷ 10 yr = $26.00/yr
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers

4 · Checked travel where weight allowance is tighter than size allowance
Travelpro Maxlite 5 Large Check-In Expandable Spinner (29 in)
8 lb for a 29 in case is genuinely light, but the published overall size is 65 linear inches — three over the 62 in cap almost every US carrier applies to checked bags.

Warranty Built For A Lifetime limited warranty with the Trusted Companion Promise, which Travelpro publishes as covering airline-caused damage for the first year
Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.
What it does well
- 8 lb published for a 29 in case leaves 42 lb of payload inside a 50 lb checked cap
- The published warranty covers airline-caused damage for the first year, which almost nothing else does
- Expands 2 in, which is the return leg solved
What you give up
- 65 published linear inches is over the 62 in cap most US carriers apply to checked bags
- Softside means the shell protects contents less than a hard case would
- No manufacturer-published price to compute cost per covered year
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers
- Carry efficiency not scored — No published capacity, so weight per liter cannot be computed.
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)
