Eagle Creek vs Patagonia Wheeled Duffels

The bigger bag is the lighter bag, by nearly five pounds. What the heavier one buys is the most weather-resistant shell in this ledger - and no published price.

The bigger bag weighs half as much

This is the part that makes the comparison worth writing. The Eagle Creek is 38 L larger and 4.79 lb lighter. Per liter it is 0.04 lb against 0.13 — more than three times as efficient, and the best figure of any wheeled bag in our ledger by a wide margin.

Wheels normally cost dearly in weight. The wheeled carry-on cases we track publish 0.12 to 0.27 lb per liter. The Eagle Creek is the exception, and it is the reason it scores 6.5 despite being a large checked bag with no airline-fit advantage at all.

Against a typical 50 lb checked allowance that difference is 4.79 lb of clothes, gear or gifts you are allowed to bring in one bag and not the other. What an overweight bag actually costs is the page on the other side of that line.

What the Patagonia weight buys

Fabric, and a specific kind of it. Patagonia publishes a 14.1 oz, 900 denier recycled polyester ripstop with a recycled TPU-film laminate. Eagle Creek publishes 800D nylon dobby with 1680D ballistic polyester panels, and states the bag is made without the intentional use of PFAS.

Both are serious specifications. The Patagonia’s laminate is the more weather-focused of the two, which is what you want if the bag lives on boat decks, truck beds and wet ground rather than on baggage belts. How the weather-resistant duffels compare covers that axis specifically.

Patagonia also publishes the only warranty in our ledger that offers a refund as a remedy — the Ironclad Guarantee is repair, replace or refund. Eagle Creek’s No Matter What warranty is published as covering the life of the gear.

The missing price

We could not read a published price for the Black Hole Wheeled 70 on Patagonia’s own product page, so its value axis is not scored. That is not a judgment about whether it is expensive; it is a statement that we cannot do the arithmetic in public, which is the standard this site holds itself to.

The verdict

Buy the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled 110 if

You are checking a bag and want the most usable allowance. A published 4.25 lb for 108 L is the single most efficient wheeled bag we track, it publishes a price, and its warranty is open-ended.

Buy the Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 70 if

The bag will be wet, muddy or thrown onto something abrasive on a regular basis, and you have found a price you are happy with. The laminated shell and the refund clause are real, published advantages — they just cost you five pounds of allowance to own.

Buy neither if

You are trying to avoid checking a bag at all. These are both checked luggage; the carry-on question is a different one, and the duffels that pass a gate sizer is where it is answered.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

1 · Checked travel where you want wheels without paying for them in allowance

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled Duffel 110L

6.5

A published 4 lb 4 oz for 108 liters is the best weight-per-liter figure of any wheeled bag in this ledger by a factor of three — wheels usually cost far more than this.

Warranty No Matter What limited warranty — published as covering the life of the gear

Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 0.039 lb per liter published — roughly a quarter of the figure for a wheeled duffel of half the size
  • 1680D ballistic polyester panels where the bag drags
  • No Matter What warranty, published as covering the life of the gear, with a repair route

What you give up

  • 30 × 14 × 15 in is 59 linear inches — inside the 62 in checked rule, and nowhere near a carry-on
  • A soft-sided bag gives no structural protection to anything fragile
  • Eagle Creek does not publish whether the warranty covers airline handling damage
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.4/10 $239 ÷ 20 yr = $11.95/yr; $239 ÷ 108 L = $2.21/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers
  • Carry efficiency 10.0/10 4.25 lb ÷ 108 L = 0.039 lb/L
  • Warranty & support 8.0/10 no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

Specs: Eagle Creek published specifications and price, compiled 3 September 2026. Eagle Creek published $239.00 as the regular price, with a $167.30 sale price showing on 9 September 2026. The regular price is used so the value arithmetic is not flattered.

2 · Wet, rough trips where the fabric matters more than the allowance

Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled Duffel 70L

4.6

Skip this one. For most checked travel. It publishes 9.04 lb for 70 L against 4.25 lb for 108 L, which is more than twice the weight per liter, and Patagonia publishes no price we could read - so its value cannot be scored at all. Buy it for weather, not for allowance.

The most weather-resistant shell of any duffel in this ledger, and at a published 9 lb 0.6 oz for 70 liters it is more than twice the weight per liter of the Eagle Creek.

What it does well

  • 900-denier recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate — the toughest duffel fabric here
  • Ironclad Guarantee, published as repair, replace or refund
  • 27 × 13 × 14.5 in is 54.5 linear inches, comfortably inside the 62 in checked rule

What you give up

  • 9 lb 0.6 oz published — 4.79 lb heavier than the 108 L Eagle Creek, for 38 fewer liters
  • 0.129 lb per liter, more than three times the Eagle Creek's figure
  • No published US price was readable, so cost per covered year cannot be computed

Common questions

Which wheeled duffel is lighter, Eagle Creek or Patagonia?
The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Wheeled, and by a lot: a published 4.25 lb for 108 liters against 9.04 lb for the Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 70. Per liter that is 0.04 lb against 0.13 lb.
Do wheeled duffels fit the 62 linear inch checked limit?
These two do. The Eagle Creek publishes 30 x 14 x 15 inches, which totals 59 linear inches, and the Patagonia publishes 27 x 13 x 14.5 inches, totaling 54.5. Both are inside the 62 inch limit almost every US carrier publishes.
How much can I pack in a checked duffel before it is overweight?
Subtract the empty bag from the allowance. On a typical 50 lb checked limit the Eagle Creek leaves 45.75 lb and the Patagonia leaves 40.96 lb. Weigh it at home rather than at the desk - a luggage scale costs about ten dollars.
Is the Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled waterproof?
Patagonia publishes a recycled TPU-film laminate over 900 denier ripstop, which is a weather-resistance specification rather than a waterproof rating. We publish the maker’s wording rather than upgrading it to a claim they did not make.
