The Best Travel Duffel Bag
The best capacity-per-pound numbers on this entire site belong to duffels. What you give up is structure — and structure is what a gate sizer measures.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel carries a published 40 L for 2 lb 1 oz — 0.05 lb per liter, the best carry-efficiency figure on this site. The Osprey Daylite Duffel carries 45 L for 1.4 lb at $95, which is $4.75 per covered year, the cheapest anywhere in our ledger.

Duffels win on numbers, and it is not close
A duffel is a bag with no frame, no wheels, no telescoping handle and no molded shell. Everything a suitcase spends weight and interior volume on, a duffel simply does not have — so the capacity-per-pound figures are in a different class.
| Bag | Type | Weight | Capacity | Weight per liter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | Duffel | 2.06 lb | 40 L | 0.05 lb/L |
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Duffel 40L | Duffel | 1.81 lb | 40 L | 0.05 lb/L |
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | Duffel | 1.4 lb | 45 L | 0.03 lb/L |
| Osprey Farpoint 40 (for comparison) | Pack | 3.27 lb | 40 L | 0.08 lb/L |
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 (for comparison) | Wheeled case | 5.4 lb | 46 L | 0.12 lb/L |
The Osprey Daylite Duffel carries more than the best travel pack in our ledger and weighs less than half as much. That is the whole argument for a duffel, expressed in two published numbers.
What you give up: shape
A duffel has whatever shape its contents give it, which cuts both ways.
In your favor: it squashes into a bin gap a rigid case could not enter, and it exceeds its own nominal box when packed. The Daylite Duffel publishes 45 L of capacity inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box that computes to only 43.4 L — a negative loss, which is a thing only soft bags do.
Against you: a gate sizer measures a rigid frame, and a duffel packed to bulging does not fit through a frame it cleared when empty. The published dimension is a floor rather than a fact, which is why measuring a soft bag honestly means measuring it packed.
| Bag | Published size | Depth | US carriers it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | 22 × 12.5 × 9 in | 9 in | 11 of 11 |
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | 21 × 14 × 9 in | 9 in | 11 of 11 |
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | 21 × 13.7 × 10.6 in | 10.6 in | 4 of 11 |
Two of the three clear every carrier in our table, which is a better hit rate than the wheeled carry-ons manage. The carry-on-specific comparison is here.
The warranties are unusually strong
Three duffels, three warranties with no stated end date — and one of them lists a refund as a remedy, which nothing else in our whole ledger does.
| Bag | Published price | Warranty | Cost per covered year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osprey Daylite Duffel 45 | $95 | All Mighty Guarantee | $4.75 |
| Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L | $149 | Limited lifetime | $7.45 |
| Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L | $159 | Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund | $7.95 |
$4.75 per covered year is the lowest figure anywhere on this site, and it buys the largest published capacity of any carry-on-legal bag we track. That is a genuinely unusual combination and it is why the Daylite ranks where it does.
Straps are the thing to check
A duffel is carried by hand or on a shoulder, and 45 L of contents on one shoulder across a terminal is unpleasant. What separates a duffel that works for a week from one that ruins a shoulder is whether it publishes removable backpack straps.
- Patagonia publishes removable padded backpack straps, plus daisy chains and a padded base — a bag designed to be worn.
- Osprey publishes a duffel that converts to a backpack, in a bag weighing 1.4 lb.
- Eagle Creek publishes a shoulder strap rather than a harness, and packs into its own end pocket — a different priority, and a legitimate one.
Who should buy which
- Maximum capacity that still clears a sizer → Osprey Daylite Duffel 45. 45 L inside 21 × 14 × 9 in, at the lowest cost per covered year on this site.
- A duffel that is certainly a carry-on → Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler. 22 × 12.5 × 9 in is real margin on the width, and it packs into its own pocket when not in use.
- A bag to check, throw in a car, or take somewhere rough → Patagonia Black Hole. The best carry efficiency here, the strongest warranty remedy in our ledger, and a published depth that is over the carry-on standard.
- You want to roll it → not a duffel. The wheeled ranking is the right page, and it is honest about what wheels cost you in weight and volume.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.

What it does well
- $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
- 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
- 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack
What you give up
- 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
- No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
- Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)

- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
- 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
- $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty
What you give up
- No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
- Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
- A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY

3 · A carry-on that becomes a backpack when the terminal is long
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L
Skip this one. Skip it if you are buying a carry-on. Its published 10.6 in depth is over the 9 in standard at six US carriers, and a soft duffel packed full does not get thinner. The Ironclad Guarantee and the 0.05 lb per liter figure are the best in the category — buy it as a bag you check or throw in a car, not as a bag you take to a sizer.
40 L for 2 lb 1 oz under a guarantee that includes a refund as a remedy — the only warranty in this ledger that will give your money back.

- 2.06 lb
- Capacity
- 40 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.05 lb/L

- Published list price

Warranty Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund
Fits 1 of 11 US carriers: SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
- Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
- Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory
What you give up
- 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
- $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
- A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.8/10 — $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
- Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY
- Carry efficiency 9.9/10 — 2.06 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.052 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)
