The Best Carry-On Duffel

Two of these clear every published US carry-on limit — better than most wheeled suitcases manage. The catch is that a duffel is only the size it says when it is empty.

Two duffels here clear the published carry-on limit at all eleven US carriers: the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler at 22 × 12.5 × 9 in and the Osprey Daylite Duffel at 21 × 14 × 9 in. That is a better hit rate than the wheeled suitcases in our ledger manage — but a soft bag packed full is not the size its spec sheet says.

A packed canvas sea bag

Duffels fit better than suitcases, on paper

This is a genuinely counter-intuitive result and it falls straight out of the arithmetic. Two of the three duffels we track clear every published US carry-on limit. Of the nine wheeled carry-ons in our ledger, exactly one does.

Published overall dimensions against 11 US carriers' published limits, checked on all three sides.
BagTypePublished sizeUS carriers it fits

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-OnWheeled case23 × 14.5 × 9 in4 of 11
Samsonite Omni PC Carry-OnWheeled case22 × 15 × 9.75 in4 of 11

The reason is structural. A wheeled case adds wheel housings below and a handle trolley behind, and both of those are outside the packing space but inside the measurement. A duffel adds nothing. It is exactly as big as the volume it holds, which is why 45 L fits inside a box a wheeled case would manage 35 L in. The full volume arithmetic.

The catch, stated plainly

A published dimension on a soft bag is a floor, not a fact. The Daylite Duffel publishes 21 × 14 × 9 in and 45 L of capacity — and 21 × 14 × 9 in is only 43.4 L of geometry. The bag holds more than its own stated box, which is only possible because it expands when packed.

So the honest reading is: a duffel that clears a sizer empty may not clear it full. The width column is where this bites — the Daylite is at exactly 14 in, with no margin at all, and a bag packed to 45 L will exceed that in the middle.

The Cargo Hauler is the better bag by this measure precisely because it publishes 12.5 in of width against a 14 in limit. That inch and a half is margin for exactly the expansion described above, and it is why it ranks first here despite carrying less.

Measure a soft bag packed, with any compression straps done up, and leave yourself margin on every dimension.

How you carry it matters more than with a case

A wheeled case rolls. A duffel does not, and 40 L of contents on one shoulder is genuinely unpleasant across a long concourse. The published feature to look for is removable backpack straps.

Manufacturer-published carry features and weights, compiled 3 September 2026.
BagWeightCarry options published
Osprey Daylite Duffel 451.4 lbConverts to a backpack
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L1.81 lbShoulder strap; packs into its own end pocket
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L2.06 lbRemovable padded backpack straps, daisy chains, padded base

Note that all three weigh less than half of what the lightest wheeled carry-on in our ledger does. Even carried badly, a duffel is a lighter object than the case it replaces — which matters most on carriers that publish a weight cap.

The problem a duffel does not solve

One large opening and no internal structure means everything you are not looking at is underneath everything you are. On a two-day trip that is fine. On a week it is the reason people go back to suitcases.

The fix is cheap and it is the one case where packing cubes are not an accessory but a component: in a duffel, cubes are the internal structure the bag does not have. Two cubes, not six — one for clean and one for worn — turns a duffel into something you can live out of.

Who should buy which

  • You want a duffel that will certainly pass a sizer → Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler. 22 × 12.5 × 9 in published, with real margin on the width, and it packs into its own pocket when not in use.
  • You want maximum capacity that still fits → Osprey Daylite Duffel 45. 45 L at 1.4 lb and $4.75 per covered year — the cheapest per-year figure on this site. Just do not pack it to bulging.
  • You are checking it, or it is going in a car → Patagonia Black Hole, and the main duffel ranking explains why.
  • You are carrying it all day → a travel pack instead. The carry-on pack ranking covers bags with a real harness.

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era

Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
  • 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
  • 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack

What you give up

  • 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
  • No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
  • Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 9.5/10 $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
  • Carry efficiency 10.0/10 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L

What it does well

  • 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
  • 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
  • $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty

What you give up

  • No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
  • Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
  • A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 8.0/10 $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L

3 · A carry-on that becomes a backpack when the terminal is long

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L

6.5

Skip this one. On this page specifically. A published 10.6 in depth is 1.6 in over the 9 in standard, and it fails at six of the eleven US carriers we track. It is the best duffel in our ledger on every other axis — buy it as a checked or road bag, not as the one you take to a gate sizer.

Warranty Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund

Fits 1 of 11 US carriers: SY. See the limits.

What it does well

  • 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
  • Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
  • Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory

What you give up

  • 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
  • $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
  • A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
  • Value 7.8/10 $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
  • Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY

Common questions

What is the best carry-on duffel bag?
The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L, at a published 22 × 12.5 × 9 inches. It clears every US carrier limit we track with an inch and a half of margin on the width, which is the margin a soft bag needs because it expands when packed.
Can a duffel bag be a carry-on?
Yes, and duffels fit better than most suitcases on paper — two of the three we track clear every US carrier limit, against one of nine wheeled cases. A duffel has no wheel housings or handle trolley outside its packing space, so it measures almost exactly what it holds.
What size duffel is carry-on size?
Inside 22 × 14 × 9 inches, which is the box six US carriers publish. In capacity terms that is 40 to 45 liters — more than a wheeled case of the same external size can offer, because a duffel loses nothing to wheels or a handle trolley.
Do duffel bags get gate-checked more?
They are more likely to be waved through than a rigid case, because a soft bag compresses into a sizer frame that a hard shell would not enter. The risk runs the other way when the bag is overpacked: a duffel packed to bulging is genuinely larger than its published dimensions.
Is a duffel or a suitcase better for carry-on?
A duffel is lighter — under 2 lb against 4.4 to 9.3 lb for a wheeled case — and fits more inside the same external box. A suitcase rolls, holds its shape, and keeps clothes flatter. If you are walking with it, the duffel wins; if you are crossing terminals, the case does.
