The Best Waterproof Duffel Bag
'Waterproof' is the most stretched word in this category. No duffel here publishes a rating that would prove it. The published fabric construction tells you most of what the word would.
We have not tested this gear. Every figure here is compiled from published manufacturer specifications and published airline policies, and the arithmetic is public so you can check it. This page contains affiliate links — see the affiliate disclosure.
The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L — recycled polyester ripstop with a published TPU-film laminate, 2.06 lb, $159, under Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee. No duffel in our ledger publishes a waterproof rating, so the honest ranking is by construction: a laminate beats a coating, which beats plain fabric.
Construction and figures as compiled from each maker’s published material. No maker here publishes an IP rating or hydrostatic head for these duffels. We have not tested them in water.

Nobody here publishes “waterproof” as a number
A genuinely waterproof bag can be tested and rated — an IP rating for immersion, a hydrostatic head figure for fabric. None of the four duffels in this comparison publishes either in the material we compiled.
That is not a criticism of the bags. It is a caution about the word: a duffel with a zipper along its length is not going to keep out a hose or a river, whatever the fabric does, because the zipper is a line of gaps. What fabric construction decides is how the bag handles rain, spray and a wet deck. Fabrics and coatings explained.
The published construction
| Duffel | Published fabric | Water barrier | Weight | Price | Warranty |

A laminate against a coating
- A laminate is a film bonded to the fabric — here, TPU. It is a continuous barrier and it does not wear off with abrasion the way a surface coating can. Patagonia publishes a TPU-film laminate on both Black Hole duffels.
- A coating is a layer applied to the fabric. It resists water well when new and can wear at folds and scuffs over years. Eagle Creek publishes a TPU coating on the Cargo Hauler 40L.
- Plain fabric may have a water-repellent finish, but if the maker does not publish one, you should not assume it.
What the barrier costs you
Weight, mostly. The two 40 L duffels are close — 2.06 lb laminated against 1.81 lb coated, a quarter of a pound for the more durable barrier. The uncoated Osprey is lightest at 1.4 lb. The wheeled Patagonia jumps to 9.04 lb, because it adds a chassis as well as a laminate. What wheels cost.
On price the two 40 L bags are $10 apart, and both publish open-ended warranties with a repair route. That makes the laminate an easy choice for anyone whose trips involve boats, trucks, rain or a luggage cart left out on an apron.
The part no fabric fixes
Every duffel here closes with a zipper, and none of the pages compiled publishes a water-resistant zipper. Rain runs along a zipper track and in. Two free habits do more than any fabric:
- Pack the zipper side down or away from the weather when you can.
- Put anything that must stay dry in a dry bag inside the duffel. A roll-top dry bag is the genuinely waterproof layer; the duffel is the tough one.
The picks
- Patagonia Black Hole 40L — the pick. Published TPU-film laminate, 2.06 lb, $159, Ironclad Guarantee. Its con: no published waterproof rating, and the heavier of the two 40 L bags.
- Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L — the lighter coated one. 1.81 lb, $149, ballistic panels where it drags. Its con: a coating rather than a laminate, and no waterproof rating.
- Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled 70L — if it has to roll. Its con: 9.04 lb published and no price readable.
Every pick, with the working
Each entry below shows the published inputs, the four axis scores they produce, and what you give up. The order is the computed order, not a commercial one.
1 · A carry-on that becomes a backpack when the terminal is long
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L
40 L for 2 lb 1 oz under a guarantee that includes a refund as a remedy — the only warranty in this ledger that will give your money back.
- Published size
- 21 × 13.7 × 10.6 in
- Weight
- 2.06 lb
- Capacity
- 40 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.05 lb/L
- Cost per covered year
- $7.95/yr
- Published list price
- $159
Warranty Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund
Fits 1 of 11 US carriers: SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 0.05 lb per liter is the best carry efficiency figure on the whole site
- Ironclad Guarantee lists refund alongside repair and replacement
- Removable padded backpack straps as published, not an accessory
What you give up
- 10.6 in depth fails the 9 in standard at six US carriers
- $7.95 per covered year is good, but $159 is real money for a duffel
- A soft duffel packed full loses whatever shape let it pass a sizer
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 7.8/10 — $159 ÷ 20 yr = $7.95/yr; $159 ÷ 40 L = $3.98/L
- Airline-fit breadth 0.9/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 1 of 11 US carriers: SY
- Carry efficiency 9.9/10 — 2.06 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.052 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)
Weights and breakpoints are published on how we rank. Where an input is not published, that axis is dropped and the remaining weights are re-normalized.

2 · A duffel that will actually pass a gate sizer
Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler Duffel 40L
The only 40 L duffel here whose published dimensions fit the standard 22 × 14 × 9 in carry-on box on all three sides.
- Published size
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in
- Weight
- 1.81 lb
- Capacity
- 40 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.05 lb/L
- Cost per covered year

- Published list price
- $149
Warranty Limited lifetime warranty
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- 22 × 12.5 × 9 in clears the standard carry-on box on all three dimensions as published
- 1 lb 13 oz for 40 L, and it packs into its own end pocket
- $7.45 per covered year under a limited lifetime warranty
What you give up
- No wheels and no back panel structure — the straps are a shoulder strap, not a harness
- Ballistic panels are on the base only; the body is 600D
- A soft-sided 40 L bag only holds its published shape when it is not overpacked
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 8.0/10 — $149 ÷ 20 yr = $7.45/yr; $149 ÷ 40 L = $3.73/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.81 lb ÷ 40 L = 0.045 lb/L

3 · Wet, rough trips where the fabric matters more than the allowance
Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled Duffel 70L
The most weather-resistant shell of any duffel in this ledger, and at a published 9 lb 0.6 oz for 70 liters it is more than twice the weight per liter of the Eagle Creek.
- Published size
- 27 × 13 × 14.5 in

- Weight per liter

Warranty Ironclad Guarantee — repair, replace or refund
Fits No US carrier in our table publishes a limit these dimensions satisfy. See the limits.
What it does well
- 900-denier recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate — the toughest duffel fabric here
- Ironclad Guarantee, published as repair, replace or refund
- 27 × 13 × 14.5 in is 54.5 linear inches, comfortably inside the 62 in checked rule
What you give up
- 9 lb 0.6 oz published — 4.79 lb heavier than the 108 L Eagle Creek, for 38 fewer liters
- 0.129 lb per liter, more than three times the Eagle Creek's figure
- No published US price was readable, so cost per covered year cannot be computed
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value not scored — No manufacturer-published price, so this axis is not scored.
- Airline-fit breadth 0.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 0 of 11 US carriers
- Carry efficiency 6.8/10 — 9.04 lb ÷ 70 L = 0.129 lb/L
- Warranty & support 8.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); airline damage not covered (+0)

4 · Maximum published volume that still clears a 22 × 14 × 9 in sizer
Osprey Daylite Duffel 45
Skip this one. Skip it for wet trips specifically. It is the lightest duffel on this site at a published 1.4 lb with a lifetime guarantee, and its published fabric is recycled polyester with no laminate or coating named - so on a page about keeping water out, it is the one that publishes nothing to suggest it does.
45 L inside the standard carry-on box for $95 and a warranty with no stated end date — the cheapest cost per covered year of any bag in this ledger.

- 21 × 14 × 9 in
- Weight
- 1.4 lb
- Capacity
- 45 L
- Weight per liter
- 0.03 lb/L
- Cost per covered year

Warranty All Mighty Guarantee — any reason, any product, any era
Fits 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY. See the limits.
What it does well
- $4.75 per covered year, the lowest of any bag here
- 45 L published inside a 21 × 14 × 9 in box — more capacity than any carry-on case here
- 1.4 lb, and it converts to a backpack
What you give up
- 14 in width is exactly at the limit, with no margin for a full bag
- No internal structure, so what you pack decides the shape a sizer sees
- Duffel carry gets old fast at 45 L of contents
The arithmetic behind the score
- Value 9.5/10 — $95 ÷ 20 yr = $4.75/yr; $95 ÷ 45 L = $2.11/L
- Airline-fit breadth 10.0/10 — Fits the published carry-on limit at 11 of 11 US carriers: AA, DL, UA, WN, AS, B6, F9, G4, HA, MX, SY
- Carry efficiency 10.0/10 — 1.4 lb ÷ 45 L = 0.031 lb/L
- Warranty & support 10.0/10 — no stated end date (6 of 6); repair published (+2); covers airline damage (+2)
